The Potato Museum Show
Добавлен 17 апр 2010
Seriously? Yes, indeed. The Potato Museum was established in 1975, by teacher Tom Hughes and his students at the International School of Brussels, in Belgium. One of the first “food museums” anywhere in the world, it grew from there, and today comprises the world's largest collection on the history and social influence of the powerful potato.
Its artifacts, artwork and objects have been key to three major exhibitions: “Seeds of Change,” produced by the Smithsonian in the early 90s; at the same time, “The Amazing Potato,” a 6500 square foot project of Ottawa’s Museum of Science and Technology; and back in Washington, DC, in 2010, “Spuds Unearthed!” put on by the US Botanic Garden on the Mall. Next up? A major project with a team in Northern Ireland.

Potato Pancakes for Chanukah the Latke Story
Sholom Aleichem's 1900 story "Khanike Gelt" (Chanukah Money), begins: "Can you guess, children, which is the best of all holidays? Chanukah, of course. You don't go to school for eight days in a row, you eat latkes every day..." The reason for the time lag, needless to say, is that "latke" is Yiddish, and like most immigrant parlance took a while to find its way into the pages of English. The Yiddish word is thought likely to derive from is the Russian oladka, the diminutive of oladya, defined as "a flat cake of unleavened wheat dough."
The first latkes were little cakes made from curd cheese and fried in butter or olive oil. (Eating cheese on Chanukah is said to refer to the Apocryphal s...

The Barnesville Potato Festival dates back to 1938. It was started as a harvest celebration for the area, which is rich in potatoes. That year the festival kicked off with parades, bands, a drum and bugle corps, and of course - potato soup. On Sept. 5, 1938, the first potato picking contest took place, with a winning weight of 25.5 lbs of potatoes, picked in just 38 minutes. Nearly 3,000 people...

That’s my great great grandfather, therefore I’m a potato princess. Thanks for sharing.
@@alicianeupane7667 You most certainly are a potato princess!! We’re two of the many princes and princesses of the Potato Royal Family and the crop just keeps on growing!! 😂🤣 🥔🥔👍🏾
Anything you can share about your family connection would be helpful, especially the as important, your great great grandmother) as we're planning an entire show about The Potato King (and Queen)
That is my great grandfather
@@aliciagroves1780 Since the Potato King passed away in August 1925, I hope we as the Groves descendants get a chance to gather as a family in Kansas in August 2025 for his 100 year commemoration.🙏🏾
@jeromedrew417 I do not think there's anything planned as of yet but it would be a fantastic idea
@@aliciagroves1780I spoke with Joyce Groves yesterday and she also has tremendous interest in having an event there in Kansas.
@jeromedrew417 hopefully I'll come together and happen

Hello, "The Potato Museum Show" I saw your channel and saw that in your channel have some problems, not many. For these problems your channel is not growing. If you can solve these problems, Your channel will grow like a storm. Do you want to know these problem? If you Want to know, I can only tell to you. Can I tell here or email?
Thanks so much for the review! I have a read aloud channel for kids and I'm always open for new books to read. You are a lovely couple. God bless!
Thanks for watching. Happy to help. We enjoy sharing.
Adorable dog! What's the breed mix?
Some have suggested Tibetan terrier/schnauzer mix, but it's anyone's guess. She was a rescue that we got after "Hassee" waa returned to the shelter twice. Apparently the two previously owners were not familiar with terrier personalities. She also is similar to the canine film start Benji. Thanks for watching. We enjoy sharing.
Awesome!! Video. I’m the skateboarder from today at paradise hill skate park.
Really enjoyed meeting you both. Proud to have a popular skateboard park in my neighborhood. Thanks for taking in our show. Keep safe and having fun. i'll check out your sites.
Good evening, My name is Jerome Drew and I’m one of the great-great grandsons of “the Potato King of the World” Junius George Groves and Matilda Emily Groves. I appreciate you shedding a spotlight on my great-great grandparents and their contributions to not only our nation but to other countries around the world. Their story is truly one of perseverance and resilience at a time when opportunities for African-Americans were profoundly limited. Please keep up the good work because you have such an enjoyable and educational presentation, one that truly needs to be noted and taught, as was the story their good friend George Washington Carver, in our American history books. Thank you again. 🙏🏾❤️
Wow, thanks for reaching out. We plan to do an entire show on the Groves. We're gathering more information. Anything you might have to contribute? Maybe memories passed down through family and friends about the King and his Queen? Let's stay in tough. After 50 years we're still learning about the potato and potato people like the Groves. That's the endless fascination with spuds. There's no end to this story. And we also have a huge collection about sweet potatoes including the Carver connection. Just so much content and so little time.
@ Hello and thank you for reaching back out to me. Your plan to do an entire show on the Groves Family sounds very exciting!! Over the generations, the Groves Family has also had other family members who have made significant contributions to our American society in some very important areas. My grandfather, the grandson of Junius and Matilda, was Weldon K. Groves. He was one of the documented original Tuskegee Airmen pilots and one of the flight leaders. He was one of the primary instrument flight instructors. Needless to say, his story, like his grandfather’s before him, has left the Groves Family a TREMENDOUS legacy!! I’ll be looking out for more of your most entertaining content and again thank you for reaching back out. Stay in touch.👍🏾

Clever title!
Unique story. It's a bit scary for the kiddos, though
Agreed. Thanks for watching.
That terrier is clearly "attack trained." Please don't try to play this down.
@@Mr.E.Shoppa Typical terrier behavior. All terriers have long been bred to go under ground, hence their earth referenced name, to confront animals farmers didn’t want around. They drag their prey out, shake them violently to break their necks. It’s in their nature I haven’t done anything to “train” her to attack. Hope this has been helpful. Thanks for caring and watching our show.
@@thepotatomuseum I am so sorry you misunderstood my comment! I was JOKING. I love your adorable dog, and I think you have a beautiful relationship with him. I had a Maltese until recently so I know how great these little dogs are. Thanks for your videos!

Fantastic! 😁
Hey Tom! Was great walking with you and Tallahassee the other day, just wanted to drop a quick hello and say I hope to run into you all again sometime. Cheers
Likewise. What show are you in?
Siwash was the official mascot of Knox College. The running joke was, "what even is a siwash?" The college paper ran the "ask a student" column on this topic regularly. In 1991 or 2 linguistic research uncovered the derogatory implication. There is no more siwash at Knox College. Being on the correct side of history is important.
Thanks for this nugget. We enjoy sharing and learning new things connected to spuds regularly.
@@thepotatomuseum yours is the only source outside of Galesburg, IL I've ever seen discussing the word. I appreciate the reminder.
I live in Topeka Kansas. Topeka is local native language for " a good place to dig potatoes. " Food for thought.

Maybe you could do the "Monster Mash" song as an introduction to the mash potato videos
Great suggestion. Thanks for watching. We enjoy sharing.
I still remember when I was a little kid my grandma using the zig-zag metal wire potato masher. That was back in the late 1970's, and when I inherited my grandparent's house, the masher was still here and its stamped Made In Germany. According to internet search its from the 1950's
Many of us have a loyal connection with our ancestral kitchen implements.

I wanna try the all wooden mashers!
Yes. We mght try a test: wire versus wood, for instance. Thanks for watching.
Whew! That was a real mash up there. I may have been inclined to focus on the shape of the masher part. I wonder what difference that makes in the ease of mashing.
Good question. Maybe for a future show we do a test.
Awwwww how sweet and smart 🥹🌻❤️

Thanks. We love doing it. Spread the word. Suggestions for expanding our reach to fellow spudheads?
But now I want to know how he was actually growing all those potatoes!!
Good question. We will look into it.
I wonder if the largest potato garden is still producing the beautiful varieties.
Good question. We'll look into it. We grew 40 varieties in our gardens in Belgium and also Virginia. I planted 12 varieties with children at The Potomac School.
Did they cook em in the coal? Were there toppings available? I could sleep in one of them! Bring back the Baked Potato Line!
