    I recently read Flowers for Algernon, and this was part of Charlie's struggle; dude was so effing intelligent that he couldn't relate in everyday scenarios. He was disconnected from people around him. He lacked the ability to see what others understood plain as day. Short book, worth the read. Way sad, though. 😢

    The use of Mental Age / Chronological Age times 100 hasn't been true in many decades. IQ now is a unit of statistical level of g-factor (general intelligence) based on the statistics of the bell curve. Typically this is done with a sigma of 15 and so the each unit of standard deviation from the norm is 15 points off the mean. A person one standard deviation above the norm has a g-factor of 115 IQ and one who is one standard deviation below the norm has a g-factor of 85 IQ. Seriously this has been the correct use of the term for literally longer than most people watching this video have been alive.

    Measuring IQ is a measure of stupidity. The mediocre trying to make themselves look smart and put people in boxes. Control freaks. Individuals are not unidimensional, let alone brains with legs, with a tag attached to them. Urgh. Morons (whereby I, obviously, don’t mean people with a disability). Morons. Morons everywhere, especially in academia. It’s a pandemic (nay, endemic) of moral stupidity.

    • @jgambon
      @jgambon Год назад

      There are a battery of tests designed for people with different needs and different scenarios such as the one you describe. Also many tests of intelligence allow for commentary where one can note any prior physical, emotional or psychological issues when developing a score. Ultimately, don't worry too much about the IQ number as it is only that, a number.

    I also am now in my twilight years with a tested IQ of 159 (plus or minus a couple of points). The major 'difficulty' I faced in my lifetime was being asked to submit to blindly trusting other people's opinions..especially when they were in positions of authority and were expounding on things that could get me hurt or killed. The major consequence? I'm still here:) Many of them are not. I found, and the vast majority of my educational instructors agreed-and indeed facilitated my efforts, that I did best studying those subjects of interest to me, and at my own pace-which in most cases was rather rapid. I was intensely abhorrent of repetitive activities, and pretty much strove constantly to both learn and experience new things. I consider myself a 'student of life.' Let me just say, I've now "been a few places and done a few things." I was also blessed with a good physical body (in high school, I held 7 out of 16 school physical sports records-here's the 'kicker', my older brother held an additional 8, thus I presume my genetics were also above the 'normal.' My major faults? Until quite recently, I was inordinately impatient and to be honest, quite rude on occasion, with those around me; and to be brutally honest, I was never much good with humility LOL. I was tall and relatively good looking ( I appeared in several movies, and tv shows) so doors opened for me into a considerably diverse collection of fields of endeavor. In the sciences I was fascinated by Plasma Physics, and after meeting Carl Sagan, I gained a true appreciation for not just the man, but also his chosen field of Cosmology. To again be brutally honest, in my estimation he was a bit 'naive' with respect to his assessment of human nature. To put it bluntly, the more I learned about and experienced 'life'; the more faith I lost in the human species- so many individuals blessed with so very much fantastic potential; held back and subjugated by their same age-old ruinous proclivities. In my estimation, the 'core' of mankind has changed little in the tens of thousands of years we've existed here, "civilization" is in fact a very very thin veneer trying to cover up a very brutal and vicious primitive animal. Now, having said that, there have been, and are now, some rather remarkable exceptions. Men and women who have managed to climb above their stations and accomplish truly remarkable things. The gifts they have bestowed on the rest of us are priceless as well as being sign posts directing us towards the ultimate 'purpose' of this life which imho- and I don't use that term loosely- is to 'climb' the evolutionary ladder, ultimately attempting to achieve a 'god like' (I use that term to describe the 'ultimate' state of 'being') existence in which we can discard the shackles of our past and achieve a far brighter future, for not just a privileged few, but for Everyone. Perhaps in this I also am a bit 'naive', but to believe otherwise, is to deny myself any purpose or indeed, any satisfaction, for my having ever lived at all.

      @@peaceonearth8693 Math in some corners of education in the U.S. is being called racist these days. My experience with Math was strange. In Geometry, once I understood that a triangle contained 180 deg & a Circle had 360 deg, my mind turned to other things. I did not repeat answers that the teacher wanted to hear, like, congruent parallel lines will have the same angle, when a straight line is bisecting them. Teacher told me that I should not take college prep courses. I ended up studying Mechanical Engineering. Even Calculus bored me. I did get an 'A' in Calc 2 and sent the grade to my Geometry teacher. I finished Aviation High at 16, realized I was too young to work on Airplanes, hence Mechanical Engineering. I am 73yrs on July 5. I can still recite Pi to the 20th decimal place(just for fun).
