    Completely agree with the sentiment btw, but for this EQ in particular, there's a great free alternative called Luftikus (and another that I just found out about called Sky Blue EQ4) that's worth checking out. But also for this one in particular, the high-end boost isn't exactly tricky to recreate with your stock EQs. Kilohearts and Melda also have great free plugin suites that offer similar to what you'd get from a DAW's stock range, but can naturally be used across DAWs. But yeah, fully on-board with getting to know your tools and being able to get the most out of them. It's difficult when producers are targeted with message that "this one plugin will change your mix" etc. on a regular basis. And to be fair it is tricky to make your stock plugins behave like their 'characterful' counterparts when you don't have the expensive one installed to compare against. Though with many plugin companies offering demo/trial versions, perhaps that's a useful learning tool.

    my ideas fizzle out very quickly, learning piano is helping a lot to get the ideas out of my head and into the piano roll quickly i don't think i could work with just a piano roll very well. I play guitar and drums since little. I wish i woulda learned piano too, it's getting there slowly. Thanks for your lessons in all the piano short videos.

    When I collect and save a project to archive it should I freeze all my tracks first so that in the future I would still be able still work on tracks that used plugins that were no longer functioning by flattening them, while with tracks that used plugins that were still functioning I could just unfreeze them in order to be able to adjust any plugin settings? Are there be any drawbacks to this approach?

    Great video. From a different angle, how much time does it take to acquire this knowledge, to use these stock plugins? Comfort, laziness, instant excitement etc are bad reasons to go for the quick buy, but there must be a trade off. A hundred buks for most of us is a lot of money, so you are willing to spend time, but how about 30 (when plugins are on sale)? In that case it might be worth it.

    • @TomCasey
      @TomCasey Месяц назад

      I try to look at a plugin and learn what each knob does individually. Sometimes it takes me several days to really digest everything that a plugin can do. One tip that really worked for me was to turn knobs much more aggressively, so you can really hear the differences. I learned that from a professional mixing engineer who would turn the EQ knobs REALLY aggressively. He said he did that because you want to feel the difference. If you go through each parameter in the plugin that way, I think you can get your bearings and better understand what each thing does.

    • @TomCasey

I found my sound through teaching myself music theory and then improvising around specific ideas. I also have a mailing list where I put free content and resources for music producers.
