NC Hwy 226 After Helene
I'm sharing this video to promote awareness of the current devastation in the North Carolina mountains as a result of Hurricane Helene, which hit September 26, 2024.
Authorities estimate over 1,800 landslides occurred, over 6,000 miles of roads were damaged, and over 126,000 homes were destroyed in Western North Carolina. A month later, we still don't know the full death toll because people are still missing. With so many people displaced right before winter, the area is experiencing a humanitarian crisis.

NC Hwy 226-A, the Diamondback
Просмотров 1968 месяцев назад
They say there are 200 curves in 12 miles on this road in Little Switzerland, NC. It's a fun road. On this day, a huge storm blew through just a few hours before I got there. Debris was scattered on the road, leaving it slick in some places. Conditions were not ideal. I went through Chimney Rock, Bat Cave, Old Fort, Marion, and took Hwy 80 ("The Devils Whip") to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and then...

Sunset Ride Along

Yesterday was an overcast and gloomy day. It appeared as though a storm would hit any minute, but nothing ever came. The end of the day presented a beautiful sunset to enjoy, so I filmed it to share. I set aside my usual riding playlist themed around Foo Fighters, The Offspring, Blink 182, etc and blasted some classic rock. I would have kept that music in the video if RUclips allowed copyrighte...
Chasing the Sun

I found a pretty little country road near Chumville, NC. If you've never heard of Chumville before, you have now. The sun was getting ready to set and was peeking through the trees. It felt like chasing the sun through somebody's farmland. It's just a minute long.

I think there are many ways to love God, and spending time in nature is one of them. So I rode out to the mountains for a quick day trip. There's just something majestic about mountains. I started in Blowing Rock, and took the Blue Ridge Parkway south. Here I filmed the Linn Cove Viaduct, some pretty scenery along the parkway, and a highway that's just curvy enough to not be boring.

What are some of the reasons you can't get out to ride? Here are a few first person view clips from my latest ride, so you can come along with me. It's just you and the wind on some rural NC roads. There are lots of pretty farms and scenery. This is in March, so some trees have pretty blossoms while others are waiting for their leaves to grow back. I mounted the camera on top of the windshield ...

Great mountain views, and a Diamondback run
Just a gentle touch as the footrests caress the pavement. Very nice ride. One of the turns had me on edge though...good recovery.
@@goldwingconepatterns2565 thank you! It was a fun time and a beautiful evening to ride
Good to hear from you. I wondered where you had been. Thank you for the updates and for volunteering your time.
Thank you! I hope you are doing well and enjoying your rides.
Thanks for a nice video setup. I have a 23-DCT TOUR and I have been looking for an alternative to my current GoPro Chin Mount. I like your RAM setup so I have bought it. But? contrary to your install is that your Bagger Windshield is way shorter than my DCT TOUR. So I find myself experimenting with a template piece of ordinary white piece of PVC in order to come up with a comfortable height. Unfortunately, my videos will have to be from behind the windshield and for Audio; I will have to use a BT FaceOn GoPro Cam... But, How did you set up your RAM MOUNT connectors to the PVC? And again, I have had to install Gaffer Tape one inch from each tip in order to secure the connectors due to thickness. I am curious? The PVC piece that comes with the RAM is 1.125" (1-1/18"). TIA for your response!😎
I like your style. Great video!
Thanks so much!
Awesome video in 4K deliciousness. Nice paddle shifting in sport mode. Hope to get there on my 23 Tour DCT soon! Subscribed.
@@keno7800 awesome, and thanks! It's a lot of fun on a DCT. You'll love it!
Great video
@@stanleymccall1 thank you! It was a really fun trip and I hope to do it again sometime. Wishing you the best
You handle that big bike very well! Is the audio coming from your GoPro/Insta360 camera mic (I assume you're using one of these cameras) or are you using another mic?
Thank you! The audio is coming from the GoPro Max 360. I don't have another mic in my setup.
One of the things I find most impressive is how well it tips in and flows through the corners being a heavier bike. That low cg of the flat 6, along with Hondas suspension development really do make it a nice all around ride.
Thanks, yes the Goldwing is quite nimble for a touring bike. It's 800 lbs, but you can throw it around like it's nothing. I don't feel like I have to wrestle this bike through the curves. It's a natural.
She did a great job, but the tail is overrated. Blue Ridge Parkway , Twisted sister , Hells canyon tail is just more popular
Thanks, yeah the popularity of the Tail of the Dragon has made it overcrowded. It's no fun with traffic. I lucked out here on a weekday morning.
While the dragon is a good ride, the best riding can be found in NW Arkansas. Roads like the dragon are everywhere. With your riding skill you would’ve have a blast because it’s sparsely populated and you will have the twisties all to yourself.
Thanks! The TOD gets awfully crowded since it's so popular. I've heard about nice roads in AR, but I've never been there. I'd love to see it someday.
You also don't have to worry about Max Wrist crashing into you.
@@thedragon1322 yuuup. I've heard about that guy. I'm all for improving my skills and pushing myself, but not at the risk of harming others.
Very similar to hwy 128 from Silverado Trail in Napa to hwy 505 in Vacaville near Lake Berryessa in N. California. A lot of switchbacks and up and down mountain road. Gotta stay focused and still have fun.
That sounds like a road I'd like to ride! The curves are my favorite part. I hope you enjoy your rides out there and stay safe
Absolutely, life is full of unexpected turns. It’s all about choosing the ride over the tears, embracing the journey with a spirit of adventure. After all, every bump in the road is an opportunity to learn how to steer better. So, let’s grab those handlebars with both hands and ride into the sunrise of new possibilities! Cheers Kev✌️
Exactly, couldn't have said it better myself. I hope you are well, Kev. Take care and enjoy the breeze :)
@@thereshegoes757 Thanks for that, I am very well thankyou for asking....enjoy your ride(s)...✌️ Cheers Kev 🤗
You have amazing eyes.
Absolutely well said....✌️
No better way to throw my life away!!!
Amen
Thanks
Goldwings have come a long way eh
Yep, Goldwing used to be a sleepy "Old Man" bike
This is relaxing
I think riding a motorcycle is a great way to refresh your mind, for sure
@@thereshegoes757It truly is, and I swear I commented on this video yesterday, but it seems it was 8 days ago.
Oh, yeah. Miss it. Back got too bad to ride like 35 years ago. Had polio, so doing well to still be walking.
So sorry to hear about your pain and the polio, that's awful. I'm glad you're walking though and hope the best for you ❤️
… lean into it!
Yes sir
It's nice still breathing but you miss riding
Wishing you the best, friend 🧡
Must be a BMW as it never reaches 5,000 revs.
Similar, this is a Goldwing. I took it easy through here. Got a speeding ticket years ago that I don't want to duplicate. Blount Co. cops don't play 😅
Nice lines. Good job.
Thank you, I hope you are doing well
I don’t know why Honda didn’t put an interrupter in so you couldn’t put it in gear with the parking brake on. You might have to adjust the parking brake now. Thanks for the video, they are always fun to watch. Be safe
That's a good idea. We've got a dashboard indicator light for the parking brake, but it's easy to overlook after you've pulled out onto the street and your attention is diverted to traffic, the road, etc. Enjoy your rides and stay safe
Great POV ride, your roads are very similar to what we have here in Tassie....including the debris..😲🙃🙃 Ride safe Cheers Kev
Hey Kev, I hope the land of Oz is treating you well. I've never been but hope to see it someday. Driving on the left side of the road makes me a bit dizzy, though 🙃
I hope to ride that road in the near future. Looks like a lot of fun
Hey, yes it sure is. I see your Hwy 80 video. It's actually not far from there. You can take Hwy 80 to the Blue Ridge Parkway, head North, and the exit for Little Switzerland is maybe 5 miles from there. 226 and 226-A form a loop. So sometimes when I'm on the Parkway, I'll just ride around that loop for fun, and get back on the Parkway.
Again , another great road. It is really nice around where you live, so green and it looks like there is not much traffic. I think that everyone with a DCT goldwing has riddin with the parking brake on. Thanks for the video.
Thank you! The NC mountains are really beautiful. Spring is finished now, so all of the trees are filled with leaves again after the winter. This is my favorite place to go from Spring though Autumn. It's great for summer rides because it's usually about 10 degrees cooler than it is here. I forgot what part of the country you're from, but I hope you can find some pretty roads.
Thank you for sharing. Very smooth footage, no up/down angle changes in corners. Clearly you are controlling the Gold Wing well and are smooth through the corners.
Thanks, that road wasn't in ideal conditions, so I was just trying to ride it safely through without slipping. It's a great machine and handles well on curvy roads.
Ooops....the bike seems unaffected by it...hopefully not too expensive.
Thanks, it seems to be working okay. I have a scheduled maintenance due, so I'll ask them to take a look at it.
It's so awesome that you've taken the plunge to start camping with your Goldwing, and there's no place better to camp than in the mountains. I've planned my camping trip to get my "mountain fix" for this year, but I'm hoping to get up into western North Carolina some time next spring or summer...maybe I'll see you on the road! Ride safe!
That's great, I hope you enjoy your time in the mountains! There's nothing quite like it.
Liked and Subscribed. I like the sound of your Wing. Beautiful country. 🙂
Thank you, the Blue Ridge Mountains really are beautiful. I feel so fortunate to live nearby.
Pro tip, on the kickstand puck. When you need it how are you going to get off the bike and get it under the kickstand and when time to go retrieve it? Tie a tether to it and drop it holding the tether and then loop it on the handlebar when time to go raise the bike take the tether and pull the puck up into you hands. Just makes it so you can do it solo on sketchy ground.
Thank you, I did this earlier today and added a line to the puck with a slipknot at the end to loop over the hand grip. It used to have a line, but somehow it got lost over the years. Thanks for the reminder.
Achieving one's desires is always fulfilling. Continue to persevere, and remember the adage, "If you truly want to do something, you will find a way." Ride safe Cheers Kev
Yes, you are right, thank you. And I hope you also find a way to follow your dreams as well.
@@thereshegoes757 Thankyou, I certainly will....👍👍
Bike sounds great when you gun it in 3rd and it was good riding!
Thanks, it really has a lot of power and is so much fun to ride!
nature is even more interesting when you realize it is the result of the evolution of nuclear soup, nothing more
Ah, well of course I'm educated on all of that. With this ride being Easter Weekend, my thoughts were more spiritually aligned.
I'm 60 with a 2021 DCT Goldwing. I wilderness camped constantly in the North Georgia mountains in my 20s and 30s. Moto camping is so hard just for your campfire, but if you find a camp place that supplies campfire wood it's makes the experience so much better. Just a few tips of my years of doing it. If there is a store you can double back too after setting up your tent, buy any type of instant charcoal or firewood. Makes setting up your campfire so easy, especially in the morning when you want warmth, food, and coffee. That instant food is a little to much like MRE meals I was served in the military. I can handle instant coffee. For food. I keep a mini cleaning kit, something to boil water to drink out of, and a small frying pan. Bring foods that don't require refrigeration, like Spam, or the ones that can be microwaved in a minute, you can boil them, eat out of their container. Funny thing is I don't really care for Spam, but camping, smelling it frying while enjoying my morning coffee in the woods is just awesome. Good luck on your adventures! You can probably find some old Moto Camping pics in my Instagram account houseboatwayne. Cheers.
Hey - nice job! That cot is a real luxury! The platform is nice and clean but I bet that open space underneath it didn’t help with the night time cooling either. I need to get out there again. Great first attempt!
Thank you, I liked the cot. I've had air mattresses deflate during the night, so I wanted something more reliable to sleep on. If you get back out there, I hope you have a great time!
I have never seen a wooden stand to put your tent on, I wonder how you would keep the tent from flying away in the wind.
I brought some zip ties to wrap around the planks, but I ended up not needing them. I just filled the tent with stuff and called it a day. But I think it would need to be secured if a storm came through
I like the campground you are staying at , not too many people . The roads that you are riding look fun. I really like the green rolling hills around there.
It was a really clean place, and everyone was quiet and respectful of the neighbors around them. It's run really well
I have been wanting to try moto camping for a while. If I can find someone to watch my doggie for me I will give it a try.
Good luck! I hope you can get out and try it sometime. I really liked it
Looked like an awesome camping trip! I too like to hit the road alone and just reset my head.😎
Thanks, yeah to me it's refreshing to have time alone to think without getting interrupted. I hope you have a great time on your next ride
Great video. Love the tunnel stunt😂
Thank you! I threw that in there to see if anyone was watching
Thanks for sharing. That campground looks amazing, the elevated platforms are great.
Thanks, I also liked the elevated platforms. I brought zip ties in case I needed to stake the tent down, but I ended up not using them.
Thanks for sharing, love the beautiful countryside. Stay safe!
Thank you, yes the countryside is gorgeous in the mountains. It's my favorite place. Enjoy your rides!
Another great trip and video. We were just west of you camping as well.
Thanks, that's great. I hope you enjoyed your camping trip. The weather this time of year is perfect out there.
Always enjoy your videos, but this one was great. Thanks for sharing be safe.
Thanks so much, I put more effort into it this time. My 12-year-old daughter is very knowledgeable about making videos, and she's been giving me pointers. Enjoy your rides and stay safe out there
I hope I can ride as well as you some day! I'm getting an adrenaline rush just watching you throw this bike around like its nothing. 😁 My dream bike is also the newer goldwing, it looks amazing!
Thank you! During my first time to ride a motorcycle on a road in 2008, I ran off the road because I panicked on a gentle, sweeping curve. I had a fear of curves after that. It took a lot of practice to get over the fear and learn to handle the curves. Now it's my favorite thing. Wishing you the best of luck, ride safe
As it is posted the music is a perfect fit. As we can soon be riding the roads outside the city it makes me look forward to the sunsets I can see. Looking forward to the moons too. Thanks for the ride.
I almost forgot the exhilarating twists through the roundabouts or traffic circles however they might be named.
Thank you, I hope you can start your riding season soon! Enjoy and take care out there
Beautiful ride!! roads are nice and views are gorgeous!
Thank you, these are some of my favorite roads. I think this is a beautiful part of the country and I love it here.
Thanks for the ride. That got me in the mood to ride ( it don't take much , lol ) I think i'm going to the high desert tomorrow and get me some biscuits and gravy.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy your ride tomorrow in the desert. That's one environment I've never ridden in. Do you get blasted with sand? What's it like?
