A fascinating, pivotal event. Thanks for this history. As an "Original Transcon RR" enthusiast, this story fits neatly, telling early Civil War tragedy'. A couple of books recommended: "To Rescue the Republic" by Bret Baier, and "Fierce Patriot", by Rbt. O"Connell, and recently: "General John A. Rawlins" No ordinary Man, by Ottens. These three books allow one to really understand the complexities, which eventually led to end of war, and also sheds light on events after Appomattox, which continued the crisis between the States, up to the 1876 debacle, which almost brought about another spit. Thank you, Ashton, from Darrell.

Thanks for this educational video! When I saw the "Wide Awake" signs of the German revolutionaries I couldn't help thinking about the "woke" proponents of today. My ancestor, Edward J. Gay, was from St. Louis and is buried there in Bellefontaine Cemetary; he was already living in Louisiana by the time of the Camp Jackson massacre, but his parents were still in St. Louis. He was against secession, but supported the South when the war came.

@milesfromneworleans...indeed, and we seem to be heading for another serious split with modern "W.oke" elements' who rewrite history, to suit their self-centered agenda'. Thanks for your comments. PS: There is a photo of Sherman and his family on their front porch about 1886 in none other than St. Louis, from "Fierce Patriot", by O'Connell...a well-written book. 😇

This POS federal park employee, with a speech impediment, leaves out a LOT of detail. The State Supreme Court let loose the last of little Capt Lyon's captives saying Lyon had no right to capture a sanctioned camp of the state guard. Missouri did indeed go on to secede on October 31, 1861. The measure was voted on by the lawfully elected legislature. LTC Oliver Snead vouched for the quorum. Now, the stature of the nut job Capt Lyon shown in the end of the video is interesting. It was originally placed on what became UMSL property. UMSL was begging for money for an expansion. They hit paydirt with with with a female in Confederate BG David Frost's lineage. I believe it was a gdaughter but don't hold me to that. She said she'd make the donation but the statue had to leave. It was placed between the Busch brewery and the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. This woman paid, for years, to have cracked corn to be delivered to the statue so the pigeons would be drawn to it and defecate all over it. This is the memory we should have of Lyon the tyrant.
