Why Is The Gulf of Maine Warming So Fast?
Просмотров 135Год назад
The waters of the Gulf of Maine, an ocean basin that spans from Cape Cod to the southern shores of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, is one of the fastest warming regions of all the planet’s oceans. For 50 years researchers observed the area’s water temperatures slowly warming, but then 10 years ago that gradual trend sharply accelerated to the concerning scenario we see today. In this presentatio...
Understanding Future Storms & Sea Level Rise in Provincetown
Просмотров 325Год назад
Mark Borrelli, a Center for Coastal Studies coastal geologist, discusses why Provincetown’s East End “shouldn’t” have flooded during a significant storm on December 23, 2022 and why it did. On that day, high winds and storm surge pushed seawater into Provincetown, particularly the east end, causing damage in places not typically associated with storm flooding. By the time the wind and sea had c...
Albert & The Whale: Albrecht Dürer and How Art Imagines Our World With Philip Hoare
Просмотров 265Год назад
In 1520, Albrecht Dürer, the most celebrated artist in Northern Europe, sailed to Zeeland (in the Netherlands) to see a whale. A central figure of the Renaissance, no one had painted or drawn the world like him. But now Durer was in crisis. He had lost his patron, the Holy Roman Emperor, and was without a mooring and filled with wanderlust. Dürer saw his final ambition in the shape of the whale...

Napi's Lecture Series: Advancing Science and Conservation by Studying Humpback Whales as Individuals
Просмотров 1522 года назад
The Center for Coastal Studies has conducted research on humpback whales for more than four decades. Our long-term work in the Gulf of Maine has produced one of the most detailed records of a whale population. Continuation of these efforts is critical for understanding population status and human impacts as well as aspects of basic species biology. Join us to learn about the humpbacks off our c...

Located at the tip of Cape Cod, the Center is a marine science powerhouse with 40 staff and adjunct staff conducting research. We also we have a dedicated emergency response team that travels to whales entangled in rope and works to free them using some of the same meth...

Graham Giese is one of the most outstanding teachers & mentor of coastal geology I have ever met providing a practical understanding of 'how the coast functions' -- that wonderful 'dynamic equilibrium' of how natural coastal processes and humans can co-exist. He is truly an inspiration! With the addition of Mark Borrelli on the staff at the Center -- incredible! Director Delaney - as always you're doing a fantastic job educating and inspiring us all! - as always! The coastal world can only be better place to live and play - we and the critters that depend on the coastal zone for their existence - through education and understanding how we all 'interact' to make the coastal zone and the near-shore environment clean and sustainable! The future is ours - only if we understand it - can we make more informed decisions. Thanks!
