Never forget 36 of them have enough energy for a big Kuriiship and spacetravel... The shard is the big crystal in the center. After a long time in the desertheat the small crystals around began to grow and consume the stone behind. The relicts from the "Djinn"-song get the energy from the shards.They will not work in greater distance to the Tahari-desert and the shards.

This is very true. Sticking to self-imposed limitations, creativity and opportunities are stifled. No society is perfectly static. These are intelligent, long-lived people who would learn, innovate, adapt. Do you really think they'd not be smart enough to say, "hey, those beds that cool down to wake us up...we can use that same technology to preserve food and reduce waste." Of course they would. A common trap we set for ourselves is thinking that if something is not mentioned in the books, it doesn't exist. Of course, what is mentioned in a novel is what is necessary to advance a plot and to establish a setting, there is certainly more to such rich cultures than what can be described, even in a series of novels. Norman himself says this. Beyond that, intentionally ignoring things that are explicit in the books is yet another avoidable limitation. We can certainly be as creative as the Gorean characters are.
