    The RPMs seem a little high for a diesel vehicle.

    • @cavisualproductions4406
      @cavisualproductions4406 22 дня назад

      No, the RPMs are where they should be. I have two other diesel cars and they also idle in this range when cold. These old diesels don't have an ECM so the idle is controlled differently. Either way you look at it 800-900 RPM is normal. They only bump up slightly when the glow plug controller is cycling as noted by the voltmeter gauge.

    • @libertycabbagemusic
      @libertycabbagemusic 22 дня назад

      @cavisualproductions4406 that's cool and I meant no disrespect. It seems that on full size diesel trucks, the tach meters seem to max out at 5000 RPM.

    • @cavisualproductions4406
      @cavisualproductions4406 22 дня назад

      @libertycabbagemusic no worries! I was a trucker for many years and the RPM ranges on the semis were not that high. In this car's case the tach, speedo and the other gauges came from a newer gas Ciera which is an electronic cluster, so no a 7K tach on a diesel would never exist because they can't run that high.

  • @Bandicoot803
    @Bandicoot803 27 дней назад

    I had a VG Golf Diesel ( Yb 1992 ). In cold days I had to reset the ignition some five or six times to get the glow plugs really heated before twisting the key to start the engine. It then started on first attempt.

    Why the new speedometer? That car has a frig of a lot more than 630 miles on it, and don't tell me that it's "turned over". That's a million-mile odometer. And why was the trip odometer (on top of the gauge) been covered up?

    • @cavisualproductions4406
      @cavisualproductions4406 29 дней назад

      @@misterwhipple2870 i had the odometer sent out to be repaired since it did not work and had them set the odometer to the correct mileage from the original cluster (will do a future video on). The trip was covered up because its not in use and don't need it. I've gotten questions about this cluster and the gauges on here are from a newer Ciera that was electronic. The transmission i had put in during the engine rebuild is also an electronic 4 speed with OD so there are no speedo cables at all to the cluster. I like a cluster with gauges on it and the original cluster did not provide that so I will not apologize for the change. If there was a diesel rallye cluster available at the time when the rebuild was done i would have gone with that but they weren't available.

    • @misterwhipple2870
      @misterwhipple2870 29 дней назад

      @@cavisualproductions4406 That's interesting. I learned something new today. I did not consider that the transition from cable-driven instruments to stepper-motor instruments would cause a conflict. His work took him all over the state of Montana, and I don't remember him having any problems of note with any of the cars. I rode in one of them once, and it percolated down the road quite well... Why do you not have an engine block heater? As a diesel owner, you should know that Diesel engines are difficult to start in temperatures like this. I would bet if you plugged this in at night, this car would fire up on the first attempt; it should not take multiple attempts to get it to start if the vehicle’s been maintained and serviced. I’d be dumping diesel fuel conditioner, cetane booster, Diesel anti-gel, among other items to keep it running properly, along with changing the fuel filter often…

    • @cavisualproductions4406
      @cavisualproductions4406 Месяц назад

      @@carwrtr1 there was no block heater installed on the car when I got it 11 years ago. Im well aware on how diesel engines are having been a trucker for over 20 years. However, where I live it does not get extremely cold here as compared to the northern states in the winter. The car previously had fuel problems where air was getting into the system causing bleed back into the tank which has since been rectified. With solid glow plugs given enough time the car starts fine even as cold as 25° without the heater. If I lived in an extreme cold state like MN then yes the heater would be necessary.

      @Corvacar yeah that was a pretty good engine for a small car. One of the first diesel auto engines that I worked on. I had an instructor back in the day who put a low mileage VW diesel out of a wreck into a Plymouth Horizon ( go figure) to commute back and forth to work. It was an easy swap because the Horizon used a 1.6 gas engine that was I believe built by VW and was the same block. He bragged about it getting 50 mpg. I believed him later on because I had an escort diesel that would get that milage on a long trip. I thought that was a good engine also. Held 2 gallons of oil and had 2 oil filters and a large fuel filter with a manual primer pump. It would start in sub zero weather with no problem.
