This is good and very well said with lots of experience of what works for your needs ! I’ve loaded and shot the 255 grain Keith hard cast bullets for years I started loading and shooting 300 grain hard cast from my Ruger with 5.5” barrel in 2007 and like the penetration ! 2018 I moved to the 310 grain WNFP and I’m considering the 330 grain to try next ! Bigger is better , biggest is best so my gunsmith always says 😂 Good one about holsters , I thought I was one of a very few with a Tupperware tub under my bed with holsters 😂 With my other .44 mag in 2020 I bought my first chest holster , it’s not the holy grail of handgun carry but I do like it and the concept behind it really is functional ! For lighter loads , Titegroup and Unique gave the best accuracy @900 fps ! In Bear country I carry the 310 grain WNFP hard cast bullet loaded using full loads H110 , Win 296 or 2400 , a great mag handgun powder is Viht -N-110 clean, accurate powder with 30% less muzzle flash ! One thing I’ve read so I tried it , when cast bullets get very far over 22 BH they become brittle, i clamped one in a vice and broke it in half using a hammer to tap it sideways ! Most cast bullet makers tell you the BH reading for their bullets ! W. D. M. Bell in Africa was an elephant hunter in Africa for years ! He always did brain shots and the first thing he did was recovery the bullet which he had pictures of in his book , deformed, bend 30*-40* degrees sideways , one was almost bend 70* sideways , they did their task !anyway you speaking of shattered or broken bullets made me think of that ! The other bullet is partition bullets , Nosler and Swift makes them in handgun calibers ! I use them in the rifle , I’m not certain Nosler still does ! From what I know after 57 years into hunting using handguns , hard cast bullets, wide Meplat is the best solution still ! Elmer Kieth said that too in 3 of his books I have ! Well you answer one question, and that is why a lot of the pros are buying this rifle in the Hogue overmolded style. I like the wooden stock and would epoxy the heck out of all the internals. (though now that I think of it, I haven't touched my guide gun). But it is ridiculous if they haven't fixed this problem. Wood actually does better than most composites if it is epoxy coated, at least with boats, but it has to be meticulously done and if there is maintenance it has to be done.

Good coverage on the muzzle brake. A few points: 1) I am not an acoustic engineer, but if you start looking into firearm noise, it is crazy loud. The db scale is logarithmic, the actual increase in db is a 10X greater sound energy for every 10 db increase. So a 160 db discharge is 10X more potentially damaging than a 150 db discharge. 2) I used to read about db levels and heard that the louder firearms are 160. Not too bad. Well actually 160 is orders of magnitude above what will cause damage, which is above 82, and above 100 where plugs and muffs are required. The very best muffs with great fit are around 30 db. Which means that if you discharge a 160 db rifle, you are standing there taking a 130 db hit, which is hugely worse than what our ears can take. 3) But there is more. The 160 number I heard for years for very loud guns is not how loud they really are, it is the point above which, meters, at least the commonly available ones, tap out. This is why people at the next bench where someone is firing a muzzle brake magnum, loose hearing from only a shot or two, no mater what they are wearing. Barrel length: The reason Alaskan rifles have short barrels is because of heavy cover, but most hunting for grizz is still in the wide open. And when the going gets nasty, your guide will take over in most cases. So what are the problems with short barrels and noise. Sound reduces at the square of distance, so shortening barrels is a double whammy on noise. You get more muzzle blast, and you get it closer to your ear. So just guessing, if the muzzle was 30 inches from you ear on a 20" Guide gun, but 34" in the African, the noise based on the distance alone would be 28% more energetic from the shorter barrel. Plus the blast effects. Speaking of blast, the 416 and 375 Rugers use the same case, so the 375 is a lot more overbore than the 416. And the 338 sounds horrendously overbore for a guide gun. Tia Shoemaker, the famed bear guide. shoots a 416 Remington but downloads it to 404 levels of around 2000 fps. Rather than her 375 Ruger she had previously carried. I don't know what her current loadings are. But that would be one way to get the blast and barrel length equation in check. The 50 Alaskan would be another. Keep loads reasonable. The moment a person gets a set of dies they seem to want to beat the factory ammo in a drag race. But for a DG rifle, just about everything is more important. Like case extraction. The Ruger barrel weight should be a great idea. The deep counter boring of rifles is a custom feature some smiths provide, and this gets you that, out of the box.

Interesting video. I love the Toklat and the 454. Since you're in Alaska, you should get Chuke from Chuke's Outdoor Adventures to come down (over or up, depending where you are) and he will accidentally shoot your chronograph for you with his Toklat. He seems to have a humorous talent for that.

By gum your correct on the not needed max velocities. In fact max velocities can reach a point of diminishing returns. Meaning faster can mean mushrooming or worse for less penetration. Now this isn't my standard idea of realistic test median but I found a 170gr cast 44 cap n ball conical bullet and a 270 gr cap n ball conical bullet at the same velocity of 1000fps will completely pass through 32" of ballistic gel. Not skull living skin and muscles, but relevancy when paired with others bullets comparison in the same media. Mountain man

Good vid. I have one in factory stock, and am deciding to keep it or not. My bolt is coated black and is very slick. I can't stand the 2 round poor quality detachable junky mag box. But I do not want to turn it into an expensive single shot to seat bullets out longer. Were I to keep this 28, it would have to shoot factory length ammo well, and I hear the factory 175 ABLRs, the rounds I have are finiky. I do like the gun, as I've not sold it yet. I like it's lighter weight for long hunts/days packing. But I do not like loud brakes. How do you handle unexpected snap-shots? Any hearing protection, or not? What scope are you using? Lastly for elk and black bear, how would you compare 28 Nosler performance, with 7PRC and 300 RUM?

Great video and rifle setup. One thing that I would change, i would use the Warne quick detatch rings that are made for the Ruger. I do that with some of my regular big game rifles because many times i just like going into the thick forest in these Rocky Mountains that are just a 15 minute drive for me getting into from my home. Though now being single and no kids I'm seriously considering moving up to Alaska, maybe the interior up in Fairbanks. Thanks again for this video.

Do yourself a favor and get the Sitka Gear. I also own that exact Montana, as well as two other Gray Stock era Kimbers.

The trigger guard is not covered so you can shoot the pistol while holsterd in an emergency.

How do you load your plus 1 bullet with a controled feed? Can you still just slide a round in the chamber and close the bolt?

I see you are using a longer barrel instead of a standard barrel = you do know that makes a small diff. so a 40 S&W would match the 10mm for penatration, using standard barrels.

i agree 100% wirhtiur muzzle break theory don’t hear many others saying what i think and do also. i would never wear ear plugs hunting i grew up deer hunting in shitgun country and was shooting 12ga 3” mag slut loafs as a 14 year old so kick dosnt bother me either

So w reloads you could develop a 4000 ft lb load for the Ruger 375 that maybe wouldn’t recoil so strongly?? Sounds like a great idea for a one rifle battery for Africa

Spring in Alaska a large boom stick is a must.

Tried trail boss in my 375 RUM. The groups won’t hit minute of barn at 100 yards. The groups started holding up once minimum load book data was used with 235 grain bullets.

Great review. One quick thing is that maybe the best thing about Ruger firearms is their customer service. You could have contacted them, they would have either had you ship it in or shipped you a new stock. At that point you could have glass bedded it. I don't shoot enough to have those kinds of problems unfortunately, but it sounds like you do, so I just thought I'd pass that along.
