I'm an American and I've lived in China for almost 10 years. Of all the provinces, I've been to all but six. To date, in addition to Inner Mongolia, Fujian is my favorite. The food is really good. The people are really nice. The culture is colorful and the weather (except for the possibility of tsunamis) is great. Also, as an historian, I think it's helpful to use years or western period terms to refer to things in China so that western, English-speaking audiences can understand. Although the word 古代 translates to English as "ancient", in English, the word "ancient" refers to a specific time period which is roughly 3000 BC to AD 500. Roughly speaking, it can be said that after the Tang, we're not really referring to "ancient" China anymore. The buildings of 三坊七巷 were mostly built between the mid and late Qing Dynasty (even if many of them were first constructed during the Ming). The most ancient thing about this and other areas in China is actual road layout.
