Motorized canoeing adventures
Добавлен 14 фев 2013
Motor canoeing adventures. Outdoor motorized canoeing trips.
My channel is made to help people that are interested in mounting a motor on a canoe. How they perform and handle.
I am pleased to help people with questions about size of motor.
Note: My outfit is a 17 foot Grumman canoe with a 5 HP Mercury motor on the back. It is a square stern canoe.
I have owned the canoe 50 years. The motor is a 2021 Mercury 4 stroke motor. Some of my earlier videos were made with a 4HP motor. But it was stolen a few years ago. So I went to a 5HP. It runs flat out at 12.5MPH. But mostly I run it about half to 3/4 throttle. I love to explore out of the way places. So, this outfit works great!!

Winter is here. Outside it is 12 degrees. Now is the time to look back and see what is was like last summer. These times are the hardest for me. I can't get out in nature. Watching the water flow along side the canoe. See all the wildlife along shore. People out enjoying themselves on and near the water. Soon it will be spring and all will be right again. Thank you all for watching.

Giving the motor canoe a workout.

It was a great day to be out on the water. Sun shinning. Warm water. And a full day to be in the craft I love the most. Enjoy how my life is in the canoe. Many great hours are spent in it. I love to explore out of the way places. And fishing is a joy. In a canoe, I feel like I am on the water and not above it. Thank you all!!

This was a good video to show how to put weight in the front of a canoe. I posted it before. But I wanted to share it again. A canoe needs weight in the front to keep the nose down in the water. A canoe is meant to plow water, not go over the top. I hope this helps with any problems you might have with your canoe. Thanks for watching!
Having fun in my canoe with the motor.

I had to get the canoe out and run the motor. It was too nice a day to go fishing. I enjoy the canoe much better on days like this.

It was time to run the motor on an outing before winter sets in. There won't be very many days like this. Nature is getting ready to sleep. I am NOT!

I'm putting the canoe motor through its paces for maybe the last time this year. Fall is here and the waters are getting colder. I have to get into the water to lod the canoe. No way of getting around it. So, when the water get cold. I really don't want to get my legs wet. I have a few videos to post this winter. So stay in touch. Ok?

Working the canoe motor at Indian Creek and beyond. 5HP on the back of the canoe. How it handles and preforms. I was just having a fun day out on the waters of Iowa.
Can you stand on your canoe? Thinking of fly fishing out of one similar
Yes I do it a lot while I am out. I have to stretch my back. I even stand while moving. I have had this canoe over 55 years. I know it well.
It will run at 12.5mph. This is full speed.
Pozdrav, koja mu je brzina?
I used two 2 1/2 gal jugs full of sand .. in the bow ..
@ronaldprovencher7570 thats good. But if the canoe capsized, would the sand jugs sink the canoe?
@@Ralphcanoeingadventures : that depends on the type of canoe.you have . The one i have is self floating ..
@ronaldprovencher7570 mine has floatation. But only for about 350#s. If you have gear in the canoe, it will go over that.
I've been using a couple 5 gallon water jugs as ballast with my 15' Grumman and 3 1/2 Mercery outboard. I think your solution is superior because the weight it carried lower in the canoe giving you more stability than 5 gallon jugs sitting upright. Am I correct in assuming you will trailer with the bladder empty and just fill up with lake/river water at your destination? I think you have a pretty good solution 👍 I will give it some thought my only thought would be to get a bigger pump
@GeneD283 I used 5 gallon pails. That was a mess. Then sand bags. Now the bladder. I leave about 3 gallons of water in the bag. It holds down the front from bouncing. I thought of a larger pump. But I am retired and have lots of time. And when I get everything loaded. I still hang around the boat landing. I like to talk to people. ;)
I do the same thing on my Grumman 19' canoe. The advantage of water ballast is that water is neutrally buoyant, so if you happen to swamp the canoe the ballast will not try to drag the canoe to the bottom. Also, having water ballast in a bladder prevents radical weight shifts that can add to canoe instability. Being a displacement hull, a canoe is most efficient and stable when the entire hull waterline is wetted by having enough ballast up forward. My trailer is galvanized steel, (Magneta) so no tongue bending with the weight of the bladder on the trailer. Instead of using a pump, I just crank the canoe up onto the trailer and screw a siphon hose onto the airtight water bladder fitting and let gravity drain the bladder.
@markihde4381 that is great. I don't have a wench on my trailer. I bought one this winter and planning on installing it this spring. The upright on the front of the trailer isn't meant for a wench, so I have to plan on another way. The good thing about the bladder is there is always air in it. So it will float. And it's easy to crawl over. Thanks for the input.
I found that at first when I was trying to prime the pump. It was not the pumps fault. The end of the hose was stuck on the bottom of the bag causing it to now be able to draw water up into the hose and pump. i also found after using it this summer, that I can leave some water in the bag. That stops the bag from blowing out and weighs the canoe front down so it won't bounce while going down the road. But the setup works very well for weight in the front. I have found that I fill the bag all the way up. With me in the back and weighing 200#s, that is what I needed.
What… no dog?
@seaturtle5757 I take her sometimes. But she always wants to be on shore. It's hard to film with her with me.
@seaturtle5757 and another thing. She is scared shirtless of the drone 🤣
@ what kind of dog?
@seaturtle5757 half lab and half hound dog. About the size of a cockerspanual. There are a few videos with her in it.
Look at all that green! I'm counting the days til spring.
@@rootwad I can see that its going to be a LONG winter for me. I miss getting out on the water. There were days last summer that I could have gone out in the canoe but didn't. Now that it is winter, I regret it. You have not posted any videos for a long time. I was wondering what happened to you. I pray all is ok your way. Nice to hear from you. I have a few videos ready to post this winter from last summer. You have to keep your subscribers interested. Later dude!
@@Ralphcanoeingadventures Thanks for keepin' me in your prayers Ralph! We're all doing good over here. I've got a little footage in the can i may share yet, but it will probably be next spring before i'm able to get on the water again. It's 60 degrees in st louis today, i am going to run my motors on the stand to keep the carburetors fresh. Might pop down to the boat ramp too, see if the Jetski boys are out today :D
More vidoes please. I love canoes !!!
@bestfishing6338 right now I have 130 videos. That should last you awhile .😅 It's winter in Iowa. So, hang in there. Spring is just a few months away.
Just came on your channel last week or so. I love the old 17 Grumman’s. Have had several…double enders. Where are you located? I’m in Houston Tx. Lots of great bayous and rivers around here to explore. Great vids
I am in Iowa. Cedar Rapids. A lot of my videos are filmed on the Cedar River. I have had this canoe for over 55 years. I have had no problems with it at all. When I bought it new, they said in the adds that it is the last canoe you'll ever buy. They were right. I build a wood strip canoe about 24 years ago. There is a video of me in it. I love getting out in the canoe. I have a big fishing boat with a 75hp on it. But I'd reather be in the canoe. Thanks for you input. I love hearing from subscribers. And my channel is small. So I can answer people within a day or so. Winter is here now. So videos will be fewer. bye.
What's the motor hp
@@hillbillyjim375 5hp. My home page tells about setup.
Im building a Gilpatrick freighter canoe. A tohatsu 6hp tiller motor is perfect for it.
@@timhudson1846 I think those freighter canoes are soooo cool. I would love to have one of those. I built a woodstrip canoe. I have a couple of videos featuring it.
@Ralphcanoeingadventures p.s. it's also a Gil Gilpatrick Grand Laker Freighter canoe. Got the plans outta his book.
@Ralphcanoeingadventures send me the videos please
be safe especially river fishing every thing changes year to year,
@@chuckjones2368 Oh yes I know. Before I take the big boat out. I take the canoe out to find where the channel has moved to. The sand always finds a new route every year. In the summer, our river channel is only about 3 feet deep. And about 10 foot wide. So you have to know the river.
Just have to be safe out there on the water, never know what's partially submerged. Glad you posted this as a reminder.
@YFAwithTodd thanks. The canoe is unbreakable. But it will flip. If I wouldn't have been looking in the camera, I would have seen it. If you watch the video, you will see the "V" in the water.

I put the trolling motor battery in the front, and the trolling motor in the front mounted to a regular canoe motor mount that clamps on to the canoe. I sit in the back to use the 5hp gas to get where i'm going and then walk to the front to fish and use the trolling motor. It balances well for me alone with the battery and trolling motor up front. 17ft Grumman sq stern
@leeparker9436 that sounds like a great setup. Mine is a Grumman square stern also. Great mines think alike. 😉
@Ralphcanoeingadventures I really like the spray skirts on your canoe, I wish mine had them. I don't know if they work or not, but they greatly enhance the canoes appearance in my opinion.
@@leeparker9436 they work great. I thought all square stern canoes had them. So the water on yours crawls up the sides?
@leeparker9436 if you look at some of my videos, you'll see it inaction.
@Ralphcanoeingadventures No, mine works fine without them no issues, I just think the spray skirts look better than without them. I bought my canoe new in 1994 and they did not have the spray skirts then. My hull thickness is slightly thinner than yours also as Grumman used a thinner gauge aluminum in the mid 1990's on some models.
I like your water bladder idea in the front. I restored a 74 Lowe canoe and use a E- propulsion motor and get 6 mph with it. When my son is not with me I use two 50 pound sand bags up front.
@@thomaswalters5519 I used to use sandbag. This water bladder works very well. No more carrying heavy bags. Thanks for the comment .
Go back to the fifties. I was 13 years old. Evenrude came out with a four cylinder out board, the Evenrude 9.7 horse power. We had a twenty two foot freighter canoe. Lots of power , at a fair speed. Johnston had the two cylinder, ten horse power work horse. We thought anything bigger was a waste of horse power, and gas.
That is very interesting. I didn't know that. I bet the 9.7 was heavy with the 4 cylinders. Thanks for sharing.
Sand bags for balance in the front works, but one day someone observing me at the river lugging sand bags around said why don't you use 5 gallon soft water jugs. Fill them at waters edge and then empty when taking out. Worked great for me with my 15 foot Grumman and 3.5 Merc.
@@NancyKinlaw I found that 5 gallon buckets spill water going through waves. I use a water bladder system now. I have a video of how I have it set up.
@ I didn’t use buckets, I used plastic collapsible camping containers sold at Walmart that have a screw cap
Stay warm in the off season.
@@alanaugust8853 I will try. As long as there's no ice on the water. I can take the big boat out fishing.
@Ralphcanoeingadventures ... ah ??. May I suggest? A grand lake stream freighter canoe.. I'm building a grand laker freighter canoe, plans by Gil Gilpatrick. Please Google grand lake stream freighter canoes
I have the same thing. My dad had a canoe of similar type but in glass fibre.. I had a 3,5hp outboard. So I made a wooden bracket for the outboard and put it on the canoe. It worked verry well.
That is great! I have had this outfit for over 50 years. I have so much fun in it. I would rather take the canoe out more than my large fishing boat. It was good to hear from you. Take care.
I feel good on my mackinaw ss with a 55lb transom mount, as long as I dont bury the stern at full speed lol
@@DCFloridasport I have to put #140 in front to keep the bow down. Canoes are more stable with the whole bottom on the water surface. When I open it up. The canoe gets a little tippy. Your Jon boat can go in prity shallow water. I had a few Jon boats. Very practical in shallow water. But not good in rougher water. They bet the hack out of you. Thanks for subscribing.
@ a battery and fuel up front is def a way, Ive always balanced with my 180 lb nephew lol
@DCFloridasport I used to use sandbags. Now I use a water bladder. I have a video on it.
This is great. Im flipping thru, nothing but political crap. Then all the sudden, awesome canoe and music. I love it
I know what you mean about the politics CRAP. I will be so glad when it is over. To get away from it, I watch a lot of fishing and canoeing channels. If I didn't I would go nuts! In the winter, I watch my videos. Not because they are good. But. because I miss the water. I really love the music I add. I think that is one of the best parts of my videos. Some people don't like it. I have had a few comments about it. But I think with the right music helps make the video. And if I really like the music. I make it a little louder.😁. Thanks for the input. That helps a lot.
Another good edit! I'm already starting to miss the summer. I think i might have 2 trips left - going down to Austin TX this week and going to try to get on the Colorado in town, and then i think the weather will hold one more week in November for me to get out for my last paddle. Until next time!
I have not put my canoe away yet. But I took the small motor out on the big boat and ran the gas out of it. As I said before. I have to get into the water to load the canoe onto the trailer. And the water temp is getting into the low 60s here. So, I really don't want to get my feet wet. So the canoeing is done for me this year. I still take the big boat out and do some fishing. That craft, I can use all winter if there is not ice on the water. I have some stoke footage of me going out. So I can make a few videos for winter months to show. But, I am already missing the canoe! We'll chat this winter. Later dude!!!
@@Ralphcanoeingadventures Well i might have an advantage on you there then, i'm able to launch and land with a good pair of boots :D I've got a 14' alumacraft semi-v that i can put out as well, but all of the ramps near home are terribly low. I think i'm just going to focus on cleaning and restoring my gear for next year

@@Ralphcanoeingadventures I used to have an aluminum boat with a trailer but I sold it and I'm thinking of buying a small boat or canoe did I can just put in the back of my truck. Looking into aluminum canoes and I seen your video so I was curious.
@justinsmitley7619 mine is a Grumman. They are heavier than most canoes. Very well built. Mine is over 50 years old. I bought it new. Look into an ultralight. 55# for the good one. The lighter, the more expensive .
Oh that's a fun trip. Are you going to get out on the water any more this season or are you starting to winterize & plan for spring? I think i might have 2 trips left in me, depending on the weather.
@@rootwad most of my stuff is winterized. But not the canoe motor or the big boat. With the canoe, I have to get into the water 💧 to load the canoe on the trailer. There is no getting around it. So water temp is a big factor. This is the determining factor for going out. I have waders for cold weather.
Can you make a video on how you built your transom saver for your outboard? I’m tired of pulling my outboard off every time I make a lake trip. Thanks!
@Tdog9915 this winter I'll pull the unit in the shop and do a close view of the pipe and mount. Will that work?

It will handle most currents. But I was looking for a place to fish. And there are interesting things in the most weird places. I don;t understand the comment, "no chemtrails".
The motor sound in the first scene was so much like my grandparents 8mm movie projector that I thought it was an added sound effect of one for a few seconds.
@squiggymcsquig6170 😂 I never thought of that!😊 . How that I listen to it.....It does sound like an old projector!!!😮 . So funny. Thanks ❤
So, I recall when you first set up the water ballast rig up front. That was some time ago. How is it holding up for you? Any leaks? Pump still working as expected?
@alanaugust8853 it works very well. The right amount of weight in front. I have to pump out the water before I pull it onto the trailer. The pump is loud. I get a lot of looks while using it. But a good way to meet people. I always carry my channel cards. 😉 I get subscribers around the boat landings. Thanks for checking in.

A good dog makes a day on the water all that much better! You know when it comes to quality, they used to say in the photography business "F/16 and be there", meaning, the most important thing is that you were there and had your camera out, and the camera you need is the one you have with you. That looks like some swift water! We got a little bit of rain here, and the Meramec is still real low, but the Current River came up enough that i didn't want to risk it over the weekend. Gonna be looking for a day to sneak down there this week if at all possible, i'm going through withdrawal and the season is almost over!
@rootwad I know what you mean about the season is almaot over. I have a lot of chances to get out there on the water. But I always find things to do around the house or shop. Fall is a time where I start getting ready for winter. Cen the windows, cover the AC in the shop, clean the flower beds. I know I should be out on the water. And this winter I'll regret it. I am old enough that there won't be many more where I am able to do this. Some of this video was shot many years ago. And I had a camera of not very good quality. Our waters are very low. If I take the big boat our. It is above the dam. And there you can only go up a mile or so. Lots of school events with the grandkids this fall. So time on the water is limited, but I would't miss it! Nice talk. Later dude
Looks great! Man i gotta get me a little drone, those shots look great. I've been stuck working in the garage, and then we got rained out this weekend, but i'm hoping to be back on the water this week!
@@rootwad we haven't had rain in over a month. The rivers and streams are very low. I have 2 drones. One is a mini 2. I just bought a mini 4 pro. They both work great. I got an ebike, so I have been on that a lot. Can't wait for your next video. Later dude🤟
New to your channel thanks for letting me ride along. I haven’t looked at all your older stuff but was wondering what size, make model of engine do you run? Will it go up stream pretty good when the canoe is loaded? Thinking about doing a long trip similar to R.M. Patterson did a 100 years ago. Maybe just a pipe dream but us older guys can get stuff done. Thanks
It is a 2021 Merc. 5hp 4 stroke. The canoe will go 12.5mph. So as long as the water is running less than that. It will go up stream. I canoe alone. So I need the motor to get me back to where I started. Look at the discription on my home page. It will tell you most of the specs. You can ride along when ever you want.😀
I hope you don’t mind me asking but what is the shallowest you are able to run with the motor? I have some shallow rivers and creeks that a set up like yours might be a good option in. Thank you

@@Ralphcanoeingadventures Thank you very much for your response. I think this kind of setup is something I am going to look into. Hope you get out a day or two and enjoy the fall weather.
@@WilliamAM43 I was doing some thinking and measuring. I want to correct the last statement. I would say with the motor, the depth is about 10 inches. With the motor up, it will float over a 6inch sandbar.
@@Ralphcanoeingadventures Thank you, I appreciate you checking for me. That is pretty impressive, with the way things are drying up again it will be needed.
