Our Camino hiking shoes are at the top of the list of important Camino gear. However, we recommend having a second pair of Camino shoes. We take something we can wear after we get to our lodging in the afternoon and have a shower. Our feet are happy to be out of a laced up shoe, and slip into comfy shoes that let our feet breathe. We have been wearing croc slide sandals since 2007, and they hav...

Where did you get the framed map of the Camino routes?
We bought it a few years ago online. I think it was through an anon the Camino de Santiago Forum. I just went on to look for it so I could send you a link, but I don't see it there any longer. We love it because it has just the right amount of detail for pilgrims (not highway details or things drivers might need). If there is a company name on the map, it is covered up by our frame. Sorry I can't be more help. When we are in Santiago in October, we will plan to visit Ivar, and we will ask him about it. I'll let you know anything I find out, 🙂
@@CaminoProvisions Thank you so much. I am on the verge of retirement and have been thinking about the camino for the past two years. It is a really scary decision and confusing to pick routes, timing, etc. Your videos are wonderful and I have your site in my bookmarks for future research. Good luck on your next walk!

@@mimisalmon2913 How are you guys doing?! Great to hear from you! I think of you two every time the picture rolls by on my screen saver from the Navarra border marker where we took each others’ photos. 😊
@@CaminoProvisions doing great. Charles insists on working but I’m firmly retired and traveling quite a bit. I recently did the Portuguese Way from Porto and the Kumamo Kodo in Japan. The fall has us both cycling in Sicily and Sardinia and then I’m heading to Turkey for a few weeks followed by a trip to Botswana with Charles. I’m ending 2025 (so far anyway!) with a month hiking in England doing the Dale’s Way and Hadrian’s Wall and Scotland doing the West Highland Way. Safe travels and Buen Camino; I admit I’m a bit jealous of you doing the Frances again. What a wonderful experience.

Thanks ! It’s always good to know what is working for others. 😊
Chaco Z-Clouds. Good for the alburgue, even for the trail if it isn't too rocky rough.
Thanks for this suggestion. They certainly appear to be a good alternative. Only concern would be their weight to carry in your pack versus the Crocs we have recommended.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Great suggestion! When the feet hurt, the fun is over.
@@walterwest7457 so true, so true! We ask a lot of our feet to walk so many miles on the Camino. It works well for us to take good care of them.👍

Thanks, Anne!
Just found your channel which I am really enjoying. I am planning to walk the Camino, but as a single female of 55 years of age, I am a little nervous of solo travel, but will also relish the solitude, so lots of good information from your experiences for me to rhink about. Thank you.
So glad you found us! We wish you well with your plans, and Buen Camino!
Bravo
yes, indeed!

Interesting thought.
You make some great points about a solo Camino vs. going with a companion or a group. Makes me think the best of both worlds would be to go with a companion and plan to walk solo every other day or every couple of days. Thanks for sharing your great experiences and insights.
Yes, even when Wick and I are walking together, we are often lost in our own thoughts, or one of us walks a bit faster than the other. So it is as you say. You can be on the journey together, but have some solitude as well.
I am going to start my first Camino end of July thru first week of September. I would like to know what's the best way to get to St. Jean Pied de Port from CDG airport Paris. Your input is greatly appreciated. Thank you for making this video.
On our first Camino we flew into CDG, then took the TGV to Bayonne, then a local train to SJPP. To check train times a free app we like is Rome2Rio. Also a website, you plug in any departure city and destination city and it displays all the transportation that goes between the two points you tell it. For the trains and buses, it links to the correct company that provides the service, and you can explore the schedules. It also gives approximate costs. Very useful tool. We did discover when we planned to use the train (several years ago) we could not make a reservation from the US. We were told it was because the European companies couldn't be assured that they would be paid by our US credit card company. I don't know if that has changed, or if the reason given to us was true. Some people also take a commuter flight from Paris, but check out what airport those flights depart from. The person I recall flew from Paris to Biarritz, then from there to SJPP, either by bus or taxi. Hope this helps you figure out your itinerary. Buen Camino!
@@CaminoProvisions Thank you so much. I really appreciate all these valuable information.

He is amazing!
How do you do your flights back? Do you buy your flight home or wait? I'm asking because I'm not sure how many days it will take me to walk the camino
Tina, this is such a good question, and one everyone flying long distances has to determine. Many variables influence the decision: time available, budget, etc. We have usually had a general idea of what our calendar will allow for us to be away from home. That takes into consideration anything on our calendar we don't want to miss like a big family event or holiday. We know for ourselves that we want to average about 10mi/16km per day as we walk. Then we build in a few rest days where we walk a short distance or stay in one city. Then we do the math. Do we have enough walking days to travel the route we have in mind? Or do we need to plan on skipping some mileage on a bus or in a cab to keep to our schedule? We consider our goals, too. Do we want to earn a compostela? Then we have to walk the final 100km into Santiago on one of the approved routes (Francés, Inglés, Portugués, for example). We can't skip anything there. And we don't advocate skipping anything, but if we do have a schedule to keep, we don't want to push ourselves so hard that we get injured from over-doing. I know some people prefer not to schedule their flight home until they know when they will finish, but that has never been an option for us. So we are generous in our budgeted time on the Camino, and we do book our return flight into a round trip ticket.
Your training hikes are also a good time to put in the earbuds and listen to your language training like Rosetta Stone or Babble.
That's a good point!
I liked the lacing technique that Wick recommended where you skip some of the eyes. I have really high arches and I think that will be more comfortable for me. Thank you for yet another great tip!
Yes, it really helps him. Hope it will help you, too!
Thanks for posting! And showing how you you really use them. Just swinging them around does not do a thing. The real benefit is to use them to push forward: helps you with good posture, and gives you a little of an uppper body workout and relief to the joints. Think skiing. The Nordic walking was developed in Finland as a form to skiiers to train when there was no snow. Proud to be Finnish! Sadly even here (Sweden) most people don't use them to their full benefit...
Thanks for sharing this. Yes, as we learned more about them back in 2007, we discovered the connections with cross country skiing. They really have helped us so much! They do indeed distribute some of the work load to your upper body, and takes some of the stress of of your hips and knees. Plus, some of the terrain is tricky enough, it helps to keep you stable when you use them to give extra balance.
You will need data pack on your device as well as offline translate
You make good points! Thank you for adding that information.
Looks like the wind is an issue too!
Hi Brother! Yes, the wind can get really intense in the Pyrenees, especially at altitude, but it's not always as windy as the clip here. Two of the four times we have walked this section we experienced wind this fierce, and once on May 17 we had sleet and snow, plus hardly any visibility. Part of the challenge! 🙂
I walked the Camino Frances Aug/Sep 2023. For me the walk from Villifranca to O’Cebreiro was the second most difficult but memorable day. Great video. Buen Camino.
Thanks!
Thank-you so much for another informative video.
So nice of you! Thanks!
I did a segment of the Camino Frances from SJPDP to Los Arcos in June ‘23. Without a doubt, the most difficult part was the descent into Zubiri from the Alto del Erro. The so called “rock outcrops” were dangerous at times for me, a 61 year-old with advanced arthritis on the right knee. But I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. I am already planning to return to Spain in ‘25 and complete another segment. Your videos and insights are great. Thank you. Buen Camino.
Bravo fro making it through this section! Some feel it's easy, some think it's difficult, but it is MEMORABLE for sure. It is all do-able when you take the time you need. Thank you for your encouraging words!

Hello good afternoon, i have sone issues with smoke am asthmatic i cannot tolerate it , is there any instance in Meseta or any point from Saint Jean Pied de Port that is smokey or people burning the leaves or vegetation .? Thank you very much
