The benefits of backing tracks:
\t•\tThe soloists are out of the way so you can focus more easily on the rhythm section
\t•\tThe changes are more defined and easier to hear
\t•\tThe track stays consistent in terms of harmony
\t•\tIsolate a concept
\t•\tWork on problem chords
\t•\tWork on figuring out chords by ear
\t•\tIncrease your musical vocabulary and other creative ideas
Make sure you’re implementing some type of exercise. Don't get carried away by the urge to “just play.”
Backing tracks aren't a substitute playing live. It's a starting point. Playing in a live group is "playing jazz". Without it your playing will be very limited and boring.
Using these backing tracks won't allow you to alter the time, change keys or choose chords. The Band In A Box program is the only way to expand those possibilities.
I knew most of my playing here would be pretty rough but it's important to show how the melody fits the chord structure and how the process works. I think I've done that.

Don't Go To Strangers / Don’t Misunderstand Medley

In learning the melody for Don't Go To Strangers, I found a Mark Murphy version. Having listened to Mark Murphy over the decades, I had to spend some time with his arrangement. In the later 1970’s Mark Murphy had a regular gig at The Dock in Tiburon, CA. I didn’t know about him then but soon became a very impressed. He had very free and innovative style. His repertoire had a very wide range and...

Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin' by Joe Greene in F backing track 58 bpm (reharmonized). Written in 1946, this bluesy tune has lots of possibilities for chord subs and time variations i.e.,12/8 and combination of 12/8 and 4/4. I couldn't get the BIAB to give a decent 12/8 feel but you can hear it in the Shirley Horn version below. This reharmonized version is a little more involved with chord...

Elsa by Earl Zindars ala Bill Evans backing track 118 bpm. This version has an 8 bar intro, 4 choruses, and out at bar 42 of the B section to bar 65 Recorded and played at live by Bill Evans many times. It was a staple tune in his repertoire. It has a very "open" feel especially with Bills use of 9th, 11th, 13th and Sus chords and triads. The 3/4 time is lively and adds an upbeat feel to the pr...

Caminhos Cruzados by Tom Jobim & Newton Mendonca in A backing track 95 bpm Thistrack has an 8 bar intro, 3 choruses and 8 bars out. By The Time I Get To Phoenix in Eb by Jim Webb 68 bpm backing track. This has an 8 bar intro using the last 8 of the chorus, 3 choruses and a fade ending. This song is one of the most ever recorded in history. Relatively simple (but not) has Jim Webb's signature harmonic touch. Nobody Else But Me by Jerome Kern 135 bpm backing track. 4 bar intro and outro with "Tadd Dameron" turnarounds. This song has a lot to offer but doesn't get too far away from the tonic, C and at 135 bpm it has a decent amount of energy and challenge. I like to learn melodies from singers as long as I can relate. Some comical lyrics here. Some favorites are: Beverly Kenney and the Basie-ites ruc...

Nuages by Django Reinhardt in G Backing Track 75 bpm. 8 bar intro, 4 choruses, 8 bars out. This may be my favorite jazz tune as I play without thinking much. It's a go-to practice piece and there are endless versions of it recorded. Not enough can be said about this perfect song (also recorded as It's The Bluest Kind Of Blues). When the Germans occupied France they outlawed playing the French N...

Great tone from your guitar as always!
Thank you kindly!
Wow! You get a really rich tone out of your guitar. The warmth of the notes reminds me a little of Kenny Burrell. Great Job!
Thanks very much. Kenny is one of my musical heroes. I've always liked his sound and clarity. If my setup sounds like him at all, it was a subliminal coincidence from listening to so much of his music. I did get to see him a couple of times. Both times he used a Gibson Super 400 with a Roland JC 120 amp in a small club (North Beach S.F. ) and at Yoshi's in Oakland. I use an older Quilter Micropro 200 (brown) 8" speaker with a mid 1990's Guild X-170. recorded with an iphone 12. Not too sophisticated.
@@lydianbfive I thought that may have been a quilter. Very Nice!
Beautiful job Amigo. One of Tom Jobim's finest compositions....from the "Wave" album 1967.... A&M/CTI
