Ok from Italy 🎉
I watched 2 times this video, i still dont understand the way you do it. When you say you can tune 3 o 4 strings on a few movements, this is what I can not see o i cant imagine
Hi. I’ve been thinking that it is time for me to redo this video. On the new video I will try to do a better job of explaining. But let me try to explain now starting with the bass. Two notes have four strings, a felt mute is in the middle of the group. Tune the open string of the lower note, the left - upper pin. Tune the open string of the half step up, the right string, lower pin. Pull the mute from between those two notes. Now you can tune 4 strings without touching mutes. 1. The right string, lower pin of the note that you tuned first. 2. The left string, upper pin of the 2nd note you tuned. 3. Now you are tuning the next two notes, the mute is in the middle of the set of two. Tune the left string, upper pin. 4. Half step up, tune the right string, lower pin. Keep repeating. The movement of the tuning hammer looks like an “X”. Whew. That was a lot of words. Are you still with me?? Now, the three string unison. The mute strip is in so only the middle string sounds. After tuning that note, carefully pull the strip out to open the left string, the upper pin. If you are just starting at the tenor break, there is no note a half step lower, so tune the left string to the middle. Leave that unison and go a half step up, tune the middle string. Pull out the mute strip to open the left string. With the note that was a half step lower, I put in a mute to mute the left string that has already been tuned. Now you tune 3 strings without touching mutes. 1. The string a half step down, right string lower pin. I think “down, down.” 2. The left string, upper pin of the half step up. I think “up, up.” 3. The next half step up, the middle string. Now, pull the mute strip and move a mute. Tune 3 more. I do hope this helped. I will do a new video very soon.
@lucyurlacher9794 such a great explanation. Now I understand better. I will try your way. Expecting to watch your new video. Thx so much
I am not going to watch some brainwashed NPR listening lady in a Covid mask, give me a break.
I have a question about setting back check please. When checking/ setting back check will the measurement change according to how hard I strike the key? It seemed like it was but I wasn't sure. I did see I have to watch not to introduce after touch cuz it will move closer if I push it down too hard after the strings are already struck. Thank you.
Very helpful! Thanks 🙏
Thanks Lucy!
Dear Lucy, I want to be your student
another fraud
Thanks for this video, Lucy! Do you remember where you purchased that crank? All the ones I can find have too large of a sweep which makes it difficult for me to keep even pressure on the becket when making the coil on the dummy pin. That one looks like it is the perfect size. I suppose I really just need more practice, rather than more tools!
I do like the size of my tool, but sadly, I don’t think it is still made. I can make coils equally well with a larger crank, but not with a smaller one. It does take practice. If the pressure on the thumb seems intense, wrap the thumb pad with blue masking tape. Make 5 coils a day until it becomes second nature. Good luck!
What a great idea showing it with different colored electrical wire! It really showed how the splice really holds, it never quite made sense before. It really makes the whole thing less intimidating as well. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Great Job!! Can you please tell me where you got all the necessary items for doing the cleaning? Amazon maybe?? Thank you, Lou
Super helpful, thank you so much!
My hero!!!
Thank you!
Hi, can you make a quick tutorial how you use the Cyber tuner from the beginning, setup and all. I really appreciate it. Thank you!
Madame, which should be done first, the jack release adjustment or back check?
Do jack release, let-off, first. Regulation is balancing hammer travel with key travel. I start with a standard blow distance, 45mm. Any time blow changes, capstans must be adjusted. Next I set the key height. 3rd is let-off. Last is key dip and checking. The proof that hammer travel balances key travel is aftertouch, key travel after let-off, seen in a slight gap between the jack and the butt when the hammer is in check.
Lucy, your videos are all so helpful. Re-watched this one this morning, because it has been too long since I've spliced a wire and I have half-forgotten how to do it. :) Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your knowledge!
Аккуратности нет в работе с рамой - все металлическое отбивает краску )
I agree with you! I usually protect the plate, but in thinking about the video forgot that. Thank you for mentioning this!
The masked piano repairman here thinks he's Zorro.
That is a great method and speeds up the process
Hello, Im new in this world and Im wondering why is there just one string alone in the midle of the U turns strings. Thanks
Your videos are so helpful! I wish I could have made it to Reno this and met you. Thanks for all the help!
Glad the videos are helpful! Reno was great.
Hi Lucy. I’m your biggest fan. However I feel sorry about not being able to react to most of your video’s. Also it’s not possible to save them because you set them as “for children”.
Thanks for being a fan!
There's nobody around so take that silly mask off.
che brava...ammirevole come lavora con attenzione, metodo e delicatezza. With my compliments
Thank you!
How much space in between those 3 lines drawn on the chart? 1/8 inch?
No aplica para afinaciones Aurales
Is there a reason why you didn’t use the felt material for the upper strings ?
Great question. I should redo this video, because at this time I do use felt for the upper strings that do not have dampers. The felt I use is not the typical muting felt because I find it too thick. Instead, I use medium thickness action felt. It comes one inch wide and I cut it in half with a rotary cutter. For most pianos that I tune, I use the papp mute where there are dampers because there is no way to injure the damper felt with the papp mute. If the papp mute doesn't fit between the hammers and the dampers, I make very tidy and small loops with the action cloth strip mute and without touching the damper felt (pull damper as far from the strings as possible) I push the felt down to be even with the top of the damper. When pulling the mute out, I hold down the 2 keys to raise the dampers from the strings and very carefully pull the mute out.
@@lucyurlacher9794 thank you for your timely and knowledgeable response! Take care from South Carolina!
Excellent
Lucy, thanks for your videos, it’s very helpful and with love to musical instruments and music in general
What ETD do you use again?
I use the Reyburn CyberTuner.
Thank you for lending your expertise! I was scratching my head
Again very good video. Thanx... But please use a cloth under your tools so you can lay your tools on it.
You are right!
Great Video. What is the App you are using?
That is Reyburn CyberTuner. I’d give it 5 stars.
Where do you buy your wire?
Cool😅
Nice video, but please use a cloth to lay your tool on,,, Not on the iron frame.
Good point!
Thanks for this really helpful video Lucy. It helped me diagnose a loose hammer on my century old upright. After watching the video I ordered the two tools and was able to remove and reglue the affected hammer 😊
Wonderful!
awesome!!
Bravooooo vivaaaaa Brasil agradece
You are a treasure!! This helped soooo much! You have a new Subscriber. Thankyou so much. 🎶 I do hope there will be more!
Thank you! Yes, I need to do more!
Does this gauge also can be used in grand piano action? Also where can I get it?
nice, can you use compressed air? to blast the dust from the soundboard and collect with hoover?
I’ve never tried that, so I don’t know. I got several new tuning customers because they were so upset about the dust their previous technician got all over their house. As a group they were so upset that I said I would never use air to blow dust.
Lucy- How much do you want to back the old tuning out before you tighten the new coil onto it? I learned to do this "the old fashioned way", without a dummy pin, where we back the old pin out 7 half turns (3&1/2 full turns). I want to learn how to do this the way you're doing also.
I back the pin out 1/2 to 1 turn. I always have the hole in the pin oriented front to back.
Hi Lucy! Greetings, you use other wooden measurements when you regulate the letoff. What would those measures be? Thank you very much!
I found that if you are dumping an old fridge, take the rubber seals off and you should be able to extract the door magnet which is approximately 1/8” and it will hold on to the strings to let you set the let-offs!
That is a good idea. The more ideas the better. One thing nice about this technique is being able to vary the letoff distance. If a mute strip is used, the letoff needs to be more than 1/8. In pianos that have a tendency to hammer “bobble” I have hammers letoff slightly farther from the strings in order to have that slight bit more aftertouch. Thanks for your comment!
It was very helpful seeing the demo with the large wire first. Great video, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
