This manga is absolute art. I think the entire manga it self was movie, and in the end is Yuta´s father acting like Yuta from the future.

I think goodbye eri is really unique in how many different ways you can view it. The perspective you came out with is really different than mine, which really makes the reaction worth watching, and is certainly not something I can say about most works of art.

Yeah very good. I'd even say you did more than okay, really good actually. As a fujimotohead and someone who watched every other Eri video I'd even say you had the best discussion out of everyone, maybe a bit inaccessible to an average viewer because of the volume of talking per minute. Don't know how else to put that. Yeah I was planning to write a lot but no really you kinda got a lot out of it and I like the particular version of the story you described, that's always a fun part of seeing what end of the Eri spectrum you end up on from this is a metaphor, to real vampires all along, to the movie never ended we simply dressed up dad and upped our special effects budget. But no yeah good stuff, now this really makes me want to see you read fire punch, I think you'd lose your mind over that, the bendy twisted narrative it weaves is out of this world, I still think it's the best most raw fujimoto work, definitely. That would be amazing, I know the prospect of that is somewhere between unlikely to definitely probably not happening but you never know. But I wouldn't mind just seeing more manga in general, whatever that might be. No specific one shots really come to mind right now other than look back (still worth reading I'd say even after watching the movie).

Wow that blurb was really horrible by just outlining 2/3rds of the story huh. I'd never read those again in my life if that was my experience with them, if I didn't already not do that. But very excited to watch this nonetheless, fire punch is indeed goated, one might say peak fiction, absolute cinema and mayhaps even kino, indeed.

I really have a way different interpretation to Utena's actions to the rest of the comments here. Which seem to be coloured by Utena saying she felt betrayed by Anthy next episode. I don't think that's her motivation this episode at all. That's how she felt for a brief moment in episode 36. Utena is trying to protect Anthy by becoming the perfect victim, she throws herself into the relationship with Akio while showing obvious signs of discomfort "_Most_ girls would kill to go on a date with you (not me though)". During the early parts of the episode Utena wears the sweater Anthy knitted for her in episode 16 to show her allegiance. But after the badminton scene where Juri makes her confront her love for Anthy the wheels start getting shaky. Utena and Anthy acknowledge the harm each has caused the other (poisoned tea and cookies), but agree to continue their present trajectories, but it's too much for Anthy and she attempts to end her own life. The choice Utena makes here at the end is to not meet the Prince on her own to become his Bride (essentially the request of the ripped up letter), but to take Anthy to the dueling arena and fight the Prince with her. (But is that really such a good idea?)

man, i remember back in 2016 we all referred to this episode as "mad max: yuri road" LOL each place they go in pure illusion representing some character's inner world/perspective is the common interpretation of the show to my knowledge! episode 2 quite obviously feels like it belongs to uexkull, but eps 3 & 4 aren't quite so clear about who they belong to. i think they give visual hints later on about whose pure illusions they are, but i remember that when watching it for the first time, i just kind of assumed that some pure illusions belonged to people on-screen and others were like... i dunno, npcs or something. i wasn't thinking very hard about my anime at that time lmao. but it kind of makes me think that such ambiguity is part of the point of a first-time experience of the show. is pure illusion just something self-contained in a person's mind, or does it blend into the real world? is it an entirely separate world altogether? are these boundaries, these lines we draw between reality and illusion, really worth thinking about in the first place? since you record these a week before releasing to youtube, i presume that by the time of this writing, you've seen episode 6, which is when the show starts exploring these questions (and also the one which left the strongest impression in my memory, despite not even being my favorite) but also, the first episode being cocona's pure illusion reminds me of smth i wanted to talk abt when commenting on the first ep of this series, which is the op! the "snow-white [dreams]" bit is technically just a translation flair from goodjobmedia (the fansubbing group who translated the show as it was airing & whose translation i can tell you're using by the typesetting of the op/ed); the original jp uses 真っ白, which is more of just "really/truly white", unless the way jp uses 真 is really that different from cn. HOWEVER (2) and maybe i'm just biased bc the gjm translation is the one i grew up on, i do think that translating it as "snow-white dreams" is a genuinely good choice Because of the way it ties into cocona and her point of view, her pure illusion, and it makes the following line of "our adventures will color in all of those lines" feel just that much more evocative. "i think the nan might be fake. fake nan alert?" :) anyway, i wouldn't say that the early episodes of the show are lacking in depth. rather, i'd say they're more... opaque. the first-time viewer doesn't know what to look for, and so they miss all the depth that is quite clearly laid out before their very eyes because they are lacking in the necessary context to recognize and interpret that meaning (see: episode 1 being cocona's pure illusion). flip flappers is a show that i think benefits so greatly from a second watching that i'd say it's almost necessary to rewatch it at some point to really appreciate those early episodes in the depth they deserve. "i'm looking more forward to flip flapper thursdays" this is neither here nor there, but flip flappers used to air on thursdays, at least in my timezone, and so that's what we called them back in 2016, too c: i also think the funniest part abt the show being weirdly horny is that i didn't register ANY of the horny whatsoever when it was airing. i remember being TOLD that there was that scene with the bdsm orgy in episode 3, being extremely confused abt what that person was talking about, REWATCHING IT TO LOOK FOR IT, and still not being able to figure out which scene was the aforementioned bdsm orgy scene that everyone else was so very obviously able to see. the thing that comes to mind abt the cocona being empty inside thing is that on my most recent rewatch of the show (which was about a year ago, but i took a bunch of notes because i was having like a bajillion analytical thoughts), i connected it to the moment in episode 2, when cocona is staring at that creepy painting in the school, and the artist senpai, iroha, comes in and wants to know cocona's opinion on it. and in the pause after the "but", iroha eventually fills in the answer For cocona: "but you like it, don't you? me too", and only then does cocona seem like she thinks so, too. she was so afraid of being wrong, of being different from someone else whom she respects, that she fails to have any opinion or sense of self or subjective taste of her own until that outside figure comes in and essentially tells her what to think. and i don't think iroha means to do this sort of thing maliciously, just that she might have been projecting her tastes onto cocona. which is how most people develop a sense of taste in the first place anyway, but it's not how one comes into developing a unique sense of genuine self-identity. fascinated by your interpretation of the show as having a sort of art vs. science, imagination vs. logic, emotion vs. intellect kind of theme to it. i didn't really see it at first, mostly because the "queer self-discovery and coming-of-age" lenses are hard for me to take off when reading the show, but i am also starting to understand those impressions as well, and it makes me wonder if it will remain thematically coherent at the end. i suspect i'd have to rewatch the show to draw my own conclusions about that, which maybe i will do. something i did notice when watching episode 4 last year, though, was the way i felt it was trying to portray this idea of cocona and papika having different types of intelligence, neither of which is really lesser than the other. cocona is obviously very book smart, which obviously does not serve her when they're trying to survive in the wilderness. she is made of lofty ideals (which were most likely passed unto her through schooling) that ultimately don't hold their own in the "real world". papika, on the other hand, seems to live in said real world; she has street smarts and survival skills, and she's what carries them through their island adventure. and i like that they each admire the other's different types of intelligence. i also never really made the connection btwn cocona's insistent fear of getting hurt and hurting others from the first two episodes with her feelings in episode 3 about realizing that she hurt papika, and that some part of her deep down had really wanted to do that. she's confronted with her own desires, so deeply internalized she hadn't even realized she'd been holding them, and upon having them unpacked like that, she realizes she doesn't like it. fun metaphor for internalized homophobia. "are you like a lab baby or something, cocona? is that what's going on?" love the phrasing you used there. no further comments hehehe.

I think the fax machine might represent Japanese business culture killing young people through extreme levels of overwork. Potentially also the breakdown of the single-income traditional breadwinner even being able to provide for the women in his life, the need for women to suddenly gain work in addition to their caring roles and the hostility from patriarchal society that this engenders. Remember this is coming out in Japan's 'lost decade'.

Penguindrum is so good and needs more reactions. It's up against some stiff competition though (other than Lovely Complex, which is just a cute 8/10 romcom that I don't think does anything particularly special).

Even though this is the last episode of this batch of episodes for off & monster season this story definately didnt have a final feel to it and thats because it isnt a final story at all. On the contrary this is the first story of monster season so to me it felt very much like a reintroduction to araragi and maybe even an introduction of some narrative changes coming to the show. I dont know if this more mystery-focused storytelling is gonna continue from now on sonce i havent readthe lightnovels buti wouldnt be surprised if that was the case. I kinda saw kagenui curb stomping harimaze as a way of saying "we are not going to reset the story and going back to highschool drama as our main focus." So maybe more mysteries are gonna be a part of that. That being said i really hope we get an arc focusing on the basketball team as a side story with araragi in the background, kinda like hanamonogatari, since the quick fix explanation of "oh, the basketball team is gonna fix itself offscreen" would leave me with a bad taste in my mouth. Also leaving harimaze hanging like that in her misery also doesnt sit well with me so i really wanna see more of that as well. But yeah, thats why it this arc feels way more like a beginning of something rather than an end of a season

i don't know if there's any symbolic meaning to the clovers, but their imagery does pop up in a later episode and another character yayaka shielding cocona from papika is indeed for both foreshadowing and gay reasons! my own reading of uxekull through the lens of reading the show as a queer coming-of-age metaphor is that he represents the more base instinct aspect of one's sexuality. it's very embarrassing to show or share with others, yet also extremely difficult to ignore and impossible to control. i think there's also something to be said about like. the yuri-ness of cocona's concern for papika's inability to grow up. bc i remember reading a while back that the reason most yuri take place in like a school setting and end with either graduation or death is because in japan, romantic n sexual rlshps btwn girls is seen as like, not real. they're like, practice relationships, which they're expected to grow out of. i'm sure it says something about cocona and her insistence on growing up in "the right way" as expected of her and that whole queer self-discovery metaphor, too also, the ost that plays at the emotional climax is called "trading places"!! definitely a very memorable track of the ost. always love love loved that track

WAUGH i don't usually comment on youtube videos, but flip flappers holds a very special place in my heart ever since i watched it while it was airing back in 2016 c': c': i had a number of thoughts typed out as i was watching the reaction part but then youtube kept saying "returned error" whenever i hit comment (perhaps bc it was so damn long? we're talking like 2,110 words according to the word counter in my notes) so the biggest thing i want to say that i'm very surprised i haven't seen anyone else in the comments here yet say is that the most common reading of the show i saw around when it was airing was as an allegory for discovery of one's own queer sexuality. it's not something i was able to parse back then due to my sheltered upbringing, but i've found it increasingly more obvious on rewatches through the years lol

pasta incoming. so...yeaah - the mystery was stupid. the culprit does a lot of irrational actions - and it only works, cuz Gaen is incompetent. but I don't care, it's not like Nisio was ever good in rational mysteries. we got tall sporty girls, another girlaragi, 3 cool dialogues, Senjou - what else do we need? who would've guessed Kagenui will be a mediator in a more peaceful way than Oshino, 3 vampire hunters were a ok with letting a civilian die over them losing a piece of that hot vampire mommy. Kie got a Nadeko treatment - she didn't save herself, she just were made into excepting her current position, but now it was forceful, on the background, and with not a lot of chances for her to get her own arc in the future to prove she did in fact learn something from it. the teaching of cooperation between the eater and the eaten - is an interesting concept to hear in monogatari, I find it hardly applicable to any of normal life circumstances and not to supernatural. but whatever the teaching is - it always takes 2. what's the moral of the story again?...high school girls are toxic - don't drink them.

Nah, I think you had a better read on Shiori's motivation in the first of these episodes than the second. Think about what Ruka asks her when he's breaking up with her. "What is it you _want_ me to believe?" She answers by saying that he's more important than _anyone_ else, then leaves him multiple messages pleading with him to believe that she _only_ loves him. The geometric pattern on the floor is also incredibly deliberate. It has clear diagonal lines we can use to see where each chair is facing. Juri's is the only chair originally to actually face another. Shiori's is conflicted and looking between Ruka and Juri's. Ruka's almost looks towards Juri's, but can't meet it. One thing I really like about Shiori is that we don't get much of her interiority beyond what we see in the elevator. Juri is not closeted to us. We know that she is gay, and we justify her actions based on wanting the best for her. We also similarly justify somewhat Ruka's actions based on our understanding of his unrequited love. Shiori is just the reality of dealing with someone actually closeted. Self-sabotaging, self-defeating, often homophobic as a defence mechanism and suffering from intense compulsory heterosexuality. Throwing herself at men to prove to others she's not gay. It's completely unsurprising to me how many people hate Shiori far more than they hate Akio.

There's a really interesting set of power plays between Anthy and Akio this episode. It starts with Akio making sure he has stricter oversight over Anthy by making them move in. When he sees how much she has strayed from his wishes of how he wants her to act as Rose Bride he reminds her that now it's not only Anthy that is in direct danger, but that he has access to Utena and puts the moves on Utena in front of her. This makes Anthy try to upset Akio's plans for Utena by making the Sword of Dios vanish, but she can't follow through with it. Her feelings for Utena have grown to the point she doesn't want to lose her. Akio knows she tried to fuck with his plans and his violent sexual assault of Anthy at the end is retribution.

You were so right about Wakaba giving up after Utena tells her that she thinks of her as a dear friend. Think about Tatsuya/Onion Boy's motivation for wanting to get close to Utena (or next episode Keiko's motivation for getting close to Nanami) Wakaba is using Saionji hoping to become special and be noticed by Utena (Which is why she's dismissive of Utena saying she's pretty. She knows she hasn't truly been reborn as special yet.) Anthy is the main obstacle between her and Utena's love. Look at the shape Utena and Wakaba's arms form when her rose is being destroyed, it's a love heart. After this episode Wakaba never says that Utena is her true love.

The first song I ever learned on the violin was the song played when Rakka and Kana head into town on the bicycle. It's called "Starting of the World" aka "Sekai no Hajimari". It's played plenty of times elsewhere in the ost, but it stuck with me in EP 4

well, I just discovered your channel because I was looking for a Panty and Stocking video (two VERY different approaches to the angel motif) but I've been using Rakka in my username for 20 years so.... this is an awkward crossroads lol... it's not often I see people reacting to Haibane Renmei. This series was very transformative for me a long time ago, to the point that I've used the moniker "Rakka" online through my teenage years and into my 30s, I even picked up the violin because I wanted to learn the theme song. I think this is something a lot of people struggle with in understanding this arc. Utena can't just walk away for Anthy's sake prior to her loss. As Touga explains to Miki in his two-parter, even if the Student Council and the dueling game were to be disbanded someone would still choose to control Anthy. Power doesn't actually reside in the game they play, the game is just the current organising principle for determining who can wield that power (Very Base vs Superstructure in Marxian terms). In real life people can't simply choose not to participate in the systems that oppress them, only through revolutionary acts at specific points of inflection can those systems be destroyed. Until then, participating in it as ethically as possible, while criticising the system and working towards overthrowing it is the only path towards World Revolution. e: Oh lol, you get to this point in the analysis.

When I saw that ending for the first time, I was being a dumb stupid idiot and kinda buying into the eri vampire thing. And then I saw the very last page and started to have a laughing fit like craaazy. I've never had such like a clicking moment like that and flipping to see that explosion did something to me. great stuff

So, there are theories about the end that explain it without any delusions. I think those theories are also a big reason why this manga would be very difficult to adapt. One theory is that the end was filmed early on when Eri was still in a relatively good shape, and adult Yuta is played by Yuta's dad. This is believable enough to me, but it would be hard to neither confirm nor deny this theory in an adaptation unless Yuta and his dad had the same VA. Another theory I've seen is that Eri's part near the end was filmed separately while she was still alive, and when Yuta was older he filmed his part and edited to make them fit together. This would require some skills and editing tools, but then again if he really is an adult now he's had a lot of time to improve. Heck, it's even possible that Eri didn't die and it's all really just a a movie.

I really enjoyed the preamble for this one where you've re-evaluated your view on Miki's heroism due to comments from women, but I'm very glad you also pushed back a little and highlighted the conditions under which Miki was making those poor choices. Genuinely one of the best Utena reactions already, and I can't wait to get further into your reactions to the series. Criminal that this has less than 1000 views.

48:33 "itadakimasu 頂きます" derives from the formal expression of "to recieve" as in "itadaku 頂く" to show respect and appreciation of receiving sustenance from what we eat. so maybe not mouthing "itadakimasu" would be showing the lack of respect and appreciation to what she eats which goes against the idea of to eat is to love? maybe even themes of is the love for what she eats real if there is no form of appreciation towards them? but idk there are probably way too many themes that tangentially relates to the theme of real and fake and this one feels like a stretch.
