#170 - The Crotchless Crotch Strap For Scuba Diving
Просмотров 298Месяц назад
In this video, we discuss some reasons why divers do not use crotch straps. If you find conventional straight or Y shaped crotch straps uncomfortable, an alternative is the crotchless crotch strap. This assembly consists of two leg loops, so nothing comes in contact with the divers crotch. Unlike safety harnesses, the leg loops should not be too tight or they will prevent the diver from kicking...
#169-The Dump Valve-What is it, when to use it, how to use it for recreational and technical diving
Просмотров 386Месяц назад
In this video, we discus the dump valve. The number and positioning of dump valves vary wildly with recreational bcds and technical wings. In some positions divers may not be able to release air using the inflator. To effectively be used, the toggle string must be pulled toward the surface. Better yet, remove the toggle which can be trapped and just use the string.
#168 - Life After TDI Extended Range / Trimix or PADI TEC50 / TMX50
Просмотров 233Месяц назад
In this video, we discuss what divers do after completing either the TDI Extended Range / Trimix or the PADI TEC50 / TMX course. One option is to continue to dive at the current level. Another option is to switch to closed circuit rebreather training. The last option is to take a hypoxic trimix course.
#167 - Life After TDI Deco Procedures or PADI TEC 45
Просмотров 4392 месяца назад
In this video, we discuss what technical divers commonly do after completing either TDI Decompression Procedures or PADI TEC 45. Some divers do not do any more technical diving, others want to gain more experience, the remainder enroll in the next level technical diving course. Divers can chose among TDI extended range, TDI trimix, PADI TEC 50 or PADI TMX 50. Each of these have advantages and d...
#166 - Update to Altama Maritime Assault 8 inch boot
Просмотров 2712 месяца назад
In this video, we briefly discus the resistance to sand penetration of the Altama Maritime Assault 8 inch version boot. Neoprene socks and a full length 3mm were utilized. The legs of the wetsuit were pulled over the top of the boot. Very little sand penetrated the inner boot. However, the dive was conducted at a site with only sand, no surf. The next update will involve the performance of the ...
#165 - The Helicopter Turn for Technical Scuba Diving
Просмотров 2512 месяца назад
In this video, we discuss the helicopter turn propulsion technique. This is used to establish and maintain team position. With the helicopter turn the diver rotates around their current position without going forwards or backwards. While the actual mechanics of the helicopter turn can be complex, it is often more intuitive form many divers than other propulsion techniques.
#164 - Back Kicking For Technical Scuba Diving
Просмотров 2902 месяца назад
In this video, we discuss the back kick. This is commonly used in technical diving for establishing and maintaining team position, particularly during decompression stops. In order to effectively back kick, it helps if you have a fin with a high sidewall and that you have a proper horizontal trim position. This version of the back kick consists of four steps. If you do not have horizontal trim,...
#163 - Gas Switching with One Deco Gas for Technical Scuba Diving
Просмотров 2682 месяца назад
In this video, we discus a gas switching procedure for a technical dive with one deco gas. Switching to the wrong gas for the depth is one of the most common technical diving accidents. Assuming that the tank is filled with the correct gas and is label correctly, the basic steps fulfill the requirements for multiple certification agencies. One variation is in the process for the first two steps...
#162 - DIR Valve Drill For Technical Scuba Diving
Просмотров 3882 месяца назад
In this video, we discuss the DIR or Do It Right style valve drill. Valve drills are intended to develop familiarity with the operation of backmount doubles valve for responding to equipment emergencies involving tank valves, manifolds, and regulators. This is the version of valve drill that is used in TDI courses. PADI technical diving courses require a different version of the valve drill. Th...

In this video, we further discus the mid height Altama Maritime Assault that was originally reviewed in video #140. We also do a complet review and test of the 8 inch high version of the Altama Maritime Assault boot. This boot is a superior boot for scuba diving. Despite the increase height, there are no discernable difficulties with executing frog kicks, back kicks, or helicopter turns. The hi...
#160 - Why Your Backplate May Not Fit You Properly
Просмотров 3043 месяца назад
I this video, we discuss the reasons why your backplate may not properly fit you. The primary cause of this is the fixed nature of the top and bottom webbing slots on most backplates. By replacing the bottom webbing slots with independently mounted grommeted webbing, a wider variety of diver torso dimensions can be accommodated. This provides both better angles and height spacing for the should...

Many technical diving techniques have changed as a result of this incident. These have increased the safety of conducting these type of dives.
#158 - Threading Tank Cam Bands For Scuba Diving
Просмотров 2114 месяца назад
In this video, we discuss the threading of tank bands for scuba divers. In the process of diving, some divers may purchase a new tank band or allow their old tank band to become disassembled. This video provides a step by step description on how to thread the most common type of tank cam band to insure that the tank band is tight. We also discuss the subject of wetting the tank band that is nec...

Can you use a necklace for your primary if you're a recreational diver, rather than using the necklace for the octo?
Hi, first of all, thank you for your video! 😀 I have a question. What if I'm traveling without a travel agency? Should I provide the information from the Airbnb I'll be staying in?
Yes, just where you will be staying.
Sagir E Visa Egypt Country. E Visa system could not understand for Sagir Ahmed. But now Visa confirmed from Egypt country for me.
Great recap, thanks for the tips and trip report!
Awesome video! Time to sit down and get my bolt snaps in order! Thanks, Chris
Were you the only diver with a twinset?
@@chateaubourginel6646 I was diving with a set of independent doubles on that trip. I do not consider that configuration to be a twinset as in a manifolded twinset. There was a diver on board who did dive with a manifolded twinset. I did not dive a twinset on that particular liveaboard as they charge an additional 90 euros a week for the twinset, but only 30 euros for a second tank.
Were you the only diver with a twinset?
Thanks for your reply. I started to dive independent 12L back-mount this year and I am considering using the same configuration on a live-aboard in Egypt in September. Your video was very interesting and informative. Thanks!
Did you dye them brown
No. They come in that brown color in addition to black and some camo versions. The previous pair that I had was black, but were a bit tight. So, when I paid for the second pair, I decided to go up one half size. Also, sometimes boat captains when they see a boot like that in black think that you are going to mark up their deck. Not a problem when they are coyote brown. See video #171 for the final sand test verdict.
Thanks for a great video Chris. Always interesting. I know you did videos on the PADI TEC 40, 45, 50 in the past, if you have time, could you do one for the trimix 65 and 90 as well at some point? Much appreciated.
Those are way overdue.
Why don’t you use standard metric that is used in literally every country on earth except us? At minimum use both if you insist of using imperial… super annoying. I mean , you maybe don’t care about the rest of the world or?
@@danielvanderblij8007 High time.
You absolutely CAN improve your consumption. Slow it down with shallower breaths more frequently. No skip breathing tho! That gives the nastiest headaches.
Thanks Chris !!!
Thanks this is very useful
What do you wear for socks? I tried to use Chuck Taylor’s but my RK3s hurt the top of my foot when I wore them.
@@markmild251 waterproof 1.5 mm neoprene socks. I use either deep6 or aquatec fins. Since the top of the Altama boot is higher than a conventional boot, I can see how that could be an issue with some fins.
I’m interested. Do you have a parts list or do you offer a kit? I did not see it on your website. Thanks
These would seem to work well for wet-wading anglers. Looks like they could withstand a couple mile hike-in followed by a day in a river filled with gravel, sand, and boulders. A good price compared to summer waders from fly fishing companies, and a somewhat different feature set. I have some mids on order but after seeing this I'll probably exchange them for the 8 inch version. Thanks for the sand ingress test - that's an important factor for me. Cheers!
We know you are real diver because of the mask tan.
I am interested in possibly making this mod for my back plate but where do I get the hardware (buckles) and risers?
Your local dive shop should be able to help. If they cannot help you let us know.
this is the only review I could find about the Altama for their proper use, every other video about this is cringe wannabe operators wearing them for daily walkers.

I love Marine Assault use case and how it is represented properly.
Great content. I'm putting together a presentation on elite/master level training and expressing how every piece of gear/equipment needs to be fully understood and mastered by the user. I came across this and this video in conjunction with another from Scary Fascinating to give the overview of the tragedy is perfect to drive home my point. Thank you for posting.
Nice diving and the viz looks stunning. I'm used to diving in cold water and 6m (20') of viz is 'good'. I dive indy twins all the time. Why do you reverse one cylinder?
@@anemone104 They do not have any left / right modular valves on Cayman Brac.
Appreciate the info!
Great informative video! Thanks for taking the time to share this information!
How many dives out of the 6 (in combination with the Adv. Nitrox) do you have to do with helium for the helitrox certification and whats the minimum helium percentage in this dives? I would like to estimate the gas costs for the course.
If you do a combo AN and Helitrox course, only the two 100 foot or greater dives have to use helitrox. The percentage of Helitrox for those dives is required to have an equivalent narcotic depth (END) of 100 feet. Since the maximum depth of that course is 150 ft, your worse case cost wise would be to use more than 17 percent helium your instructor should not "require" you to use more than that. That assumes only N2 is narcotic. If both O2 and N2 are considered narcotic then it would be 28%. The course standards prevent the use of more than 35%. If you only dove to 100 feet as required then technically any amount of H would qualify for the Helitrox certification. A lot of divers don't want to use any H unless they are required to. You are only required to use H in the advanced trimix course if you take AN, DP, and extended range.
What is the buoyancy of this boot ?
Very slightly positive in 8 inch high size 11 wide
I am going through the same process as you. Skill and costs go up exponentially so the time to get there is longer
George Irvine and others went looking for the bodies on at least 2-3 trips. I was on the boat with them on those trips. One dive was a fiasco, with one diver abandoning his scooter that stuck on. If I recall correctly, it was recovered on the bottom on a later dive. I knew the instructor - Andre - he was EXTREMELY unsafe and reckless with his diving, per my personal observation of him on several occasions. I was on an earlier dive with him where a fatality occurred and he attempted to convince myself and others to lie to the police investigators about the details of that dive (presumably to protect himself from violation of dive certification standards. As I recall reading what the survivor said.. The student was having trouble controlling his buoyancy for the whole dive, but Andre did not abort the dive early. My recollection about what the survivor reported is sketchy. I think it might have been posted on the aquanauts list server years ago. Not sure if that is archived. Also, I am also not sure if they were diving those wrecks as described int he video above, I thought they were a little deeper and I never remember hearing the searching divers describe going over any wrecks during the searches, and presumably they had the proper coordinates.
Thanks for providing the additional information. Some of the information that the video is based on actually came from the Aquanauts list.
Hopefully next summer I'll do my ext range course with TDI THEN save up for CCR
@@albertojhernandez169 Which unit are you looking at getting certified on?
@divezonescuba not sure. Git a few shops in the area that allow demo's during the off season.
I almost pulled the trigger on a choptima , but I think the Halcyon Symbiosis looks better if it comes out.
@@divezonescuba it's a big price tag.
Does this work with trilam drysuits.
@@ChristopherBurgert I think that might depend on the exact type of exterior material used in the trilaminate. I once did a sitech neck ring installation on a Whites. Aquaseal like included in the pocket kits, did not work on the vinyl like material. However, oddly enough, marine goop worked well. I have also used marine goop on other scuba applications with success.
I've written on my wetnotes with both a Milwaukee marker and a Sharpee marker. The Milwaukee ink smudged all over after just one dive. The notes written with a Sharpee are older and are still in perfect condition.
I am using the Sharpie extreme these days.
Since i wear a 14.5, should i get a size bigger or get a 14
@@DAHOMIE_RONE in my case the sizing was too small. My normal street shoes are 10.5 wide. I needed to go to an 11 wide in the Altama maritime assault 8 inch boot. I discuss this a bit in video #166 which is an update to this video.
Do those have bungee cord shoelaces? Just curious. 🤔
No. They are just regular non-stretchy cord.
I think this is one of the best breakdowns of the back kick I have seen. That includes GUE and Steve Martin videos
It looks like you're swinging your weight into the rotation. Slow it down and smooth it out. It should be controlled and deliberate.
Selling a dry suit without an inflator hose is like selling a car without breaks. Should be criminally liable
Or you could just get a pair of Crocs and some wetsuit socks... By far the simplest solution...
Wanted to get these for awhile now. My boots are wet almost 6 days a week. for the price tag of these boots, I could get 3 pairs of neoprene hardsole boots that will last me 2 years or longer. just don't konw how long will the adhesives last if it's being wet all the time.
If you are getting 2 or more years out of a conventional boot with that usage schedule, I am not sure how beneficial these will be to you. The primary reason why I was interested in them is that they don't retain water between dives and they are much sturdier than a conventional boot. The Mares Trilastic boots and the Altamas are almost the same price at the moment. I have some pairs of Trilastics that are at least 8 years old. So, at my usage rate, I expect the Altamas to last at least the same amount of time.
I’d love to see something like this but for deep dives (say 100m) where your O2 percentage has to be less than at the surface because your ppO2 is so high (2.31 at 100m).
Hello. Standby for an update video of the midheight version plus a review of the 8 inch tall version.
Glad I found this video. I've been looking for a diving review of these boots, thank you!
I use them for multisump cave diving for One year now. My only stress now, is not find them again if they are discontinued. I will never go back to any rockboot / or any shitty dive boot ever (i'm a dive professional)
There is minimal information available on the incident as only the one diver surfaced that day. The diver who was discovered five months later on the surface was found without his rig. They actually had difficulty identifying which diver he was. I do not know if the other two divers were ever found. The major belief is that the were overweighted with all the steel tanks and that the bungees prevented the wings from inflating to the rated capacities with the dump valve releasing air. No body knows for sure what happened to the other three divers after the sole survivor lost sight of them.
Thanks for sharing! I feel that some critical part of the story must be missing. Let's do some simple calculations: The first diver had two LP95s for back gas (5380 L). He started ascending when the run time was 15 minutes, and eventually ran out of backgas when solving the buoyancy problem. I don't know how much time they spent on problem solving, let's give it a very very very loose estimation of 10 minutes after the start of the ascend (which is crazy long), rendering a total run time of 25 minutes. Suppose at this moment, he averages 230 ft (~70 m). 5380/(7+1)/25, which means he has a SAC rate of 26.9L/min (all the calculations are very conservative, in reality he may averaged over 30L/min), which is incredibly high, even higher than most OW students in their first dive. This is very unlikely to happen in hypoxic trimix level of diving. Was his back gas really full when starting the dive? What's their gas plan? Was there another gear failure? Panic? CO2 hit due to exhaustion? Hyperventilation? So many possibilities. The second doubt is, the whole story sounds like he is way overweighted. But when he ascends, his wing expands, his suit is less compressed, how can he suddenly run into buoyancy failure at a shallower depth? Also note that, when he runs out of back gas, his gears will be 10 lbs lighter than when he enters water, which means the buoyancy issue should be greatly resolved. Is it really because "the wing cannot fully expand", or is there a catastrophic buoyancy failure like a ripped wing or stuck open dump valve? We can never know. The third doubt is, even in the worst scenario where EVERYTHING on this diver failed, in a four-men team there's still way more than enough redundancy to bring him to the surface from 70m. How could this incident turn into a triple fatality? Is there other possible factors? Can it be a bad fill? Mislabeled tanks? Or a second failure on another diver? Anyway there's no way we can know what happened exactly. But these are all factors and possibilities that we should really consider when planning our own dives.
How do you keep the zippers from rusting or freezing up?
Awesome design!!!! Are you going to be at Blue Lagoon Saturday? I'm gonna try and be there for the Gigglin marlin Poker Run. Would be nice to see it and meet you.

Thanks Chris for the good video. I like your idea at 5:50 regarding the use of a double zip tie to secure the necklace to the mouthpiece. Question: My 2nd stage already has a single zip tie which secure the mouth piece to the regulator. Should I replace this with the double zip tie, or place the double zip tie in back of the single one? Thanks.
It’s should be two zip ties joined to each other, so that there is only one width of zip tie around the mouthpiece
@@divezonescuba Thanks Chris perhaps I should have been clearer. I already have a single zip tie that holds my mouthpiece on. Does the double zip tie (2 zip ties joined together) replace this?
@@danflaherty1132 Yes that is correct. You remove the original one piece zip tie holding on the mouthpiece. You put to zip ties together forming a loop and then put the single loop over the mouthpiece and tighten. You should be careful when you pull the zip ties tight so that the nub is symetrical on both sides. You can have it either on each side or just below the mouthpiece. On some regulators, that will lock the bungee in place. I think that is what you are asking about?
@@divezonescuba Yes, thanks!
