    Does pouring Leachate through a worm tower a few times over again (reusing the leachate) make it more aerobic? Or do we have to first let it dry out? Also what is the difference in letting the castings dry then watering them versus putting leachate directly on the soil, which will eventually experience dryer phases?

    • @KTheGuy
      @KTheGuy 6 дней назад

      1st question, most likely but testing would need to be done to confirm. 2nd the reason most retailers allow castings to dry is to make the outgoing product cheaper for shipping. But typically worms like an environment of 60-80% moisture. But the castings are their excrement so they will typically leave that at the bottom of the bin mostly avoiding that area. Castings are high in organic fertilizers since they are made up of concentrated digested organic matter and digested organisms. With leachate you have a renewable source of both but not in the concentrations that you would see in direct castings. Biggest difference with leachate or casting added to soil you are typically not always adding the aerobic component which are the worms. Just the broken down nutrients and organisms that are still within the materials.

    i'm curious what is the best material to use when setting up plants in a pot. i have recently started gardening but don't really know what i'm doing. i recently discovered dr. elaine and her SWF method and have been trying to learn the process. i checked a sample of one of my potted plants under the microscope and it appears the soil has gone anaerobic because I saw lots of ciliates zooming around (about 2-3 per drop of the sample).

We need to learn more advance technique and tools (ex stain, centrifuge, diy fluorescence, cheap diy filters such polarised/darkfield/color). We also need fun challenge: growing glow in the dark e coli, finding magnetotactic bacteria in your local pound, finding tardigrade on moss in wood, keeping microbes alive as a pet for years, doing various timelapse, increasing video/photo quality, get a new project involved with Inaturalist to bring awareness and maybe get more people involved with science.

    I did a raised bed this year... 23' x 2' x 10" high. I used horse manure (3 years old) + wood chips on the top (inoculate with urine for 1 month). This was an amazing experience: only need to water 4 times in the whole season!

  • @alexandrevaliquette3883
    @alexandrevaliquette3883 Месяц назад

    I did a new raised bed garden this spring: I only had to do watering 4 time in the whole summer! For comparison, my mother live about 30 km from here and sometime, she has to water many times within the same week. The secret.... I put 10 inch of 3 years horse compost and a 1 inch layer of wood chips on top. The wood chips come from small branches and were mixed with pee for 1 month to activate them. I did a microscope analysis and it was full of life from day 1. At the end of the season, I now have more fungi (from the wood chip, going down). I'm very impressed by how living soil can be so efficient to regulate the water content. I was planning doing drip tape irrigation... but there was no need for irrigation!

  • @alexandrevaliquette3883
    @alexandrevaliquette3883 Месяц назад

    Well.. ok, but what would the analysis be if you have a defective batch? My guess is it would be full of bacteria and ciliates because it went anaerobic and acidic. My other guess is the microscope analysis will give you information BEFORE the soup smell bad, isn't? Still... acidity is a good thing (in moderation) for many fruits such as raspberry. Could we put a small amount of acidic anaerobic compost over a raspberry patch?

    On your small 5 gallon bucket system, have you tried dumping the compost directly into the water and just mix up the water or use your bubbler. Then jut poor the mixture through your strainer into another bucket. I think it yields more biology into the water.

    • @KTheGuy
      @KTheGuy 2 месяца назад

      With the compost freely floating in the water the ability to compress and massage against the walls of the micron bag would be lost. Massaging the materials is a very important step in the process. Without any way to filter the microbes in that physical process would lead to lower numbers overall. The methods are meant to detach the microbes from the organic materials they are clinging to which requires a degree of physical force. This was all taught by Dr Elaine Ingham who has been developing these methods over the last 4 decades.

    Good to see the example of a large lawn. Contrary to popular belief lawns can contribute to carbon sequestration. According to the research of Cristina Milesi "well-watered and fertilized lawn is a carbon sink. If people recycle the grass clippings, leaving them to decompose on the lawn, the U.S. lawn area could store up to 16.7 teragrams of carbon each year. That’s equivalent to about 37 billion pounds-the weight of about 147,000 blue whales." earthobservatory.nasa.gov/features/Lawn/lawn3.php I mow lawns for a living using all electric equipment. The grass is finely mulched left on the lawn almost sight unseen. The mulched grass is soil critter chow.

    Hello. When we start with soil food web approach, can we start with only the extract instead of the compost itself? Preparing so much compost is a tedious task. May be grow cover crops and regularly use compost extract for a season?

    • @KTheGuy
      @KTheGuy 2 месяца назад

      Compost is the epicenter to the soil food web process. It’s also the base ingredient to how extracts are made. The “web of microbes” is created in the composting process.

    • @Newsyeet
      @Newsyeet 2 месяца назад

      @@KTheGuy Thank you for patient reply. What I meant was can we use only the extract prepared from a bio-complete compost and not the bio-complete compost itself in our first season of adopting soil food web approach? May be cover crop with regular application of extract from bio-complete compost for a season will give us a head start? I am from south of India and here the land is cultivated throughout the year due to favourable climate. So resting land with cover crops and regular application of bio-complete compost extract will help us adopt soil food web approach with just the extract itself? Again thank you for your response

    • @KTheGuy
      @KTheGuy 2 месяца назад

      @Newsyeet yes, actually using compost extracts only is a great way to get started with soil microbe replenishment. It’s probably the best way to apply microbes especially if you only have a limited amount of bio complete compost as you can make an extract and put it back in the pile. Let it become refilled with microbes by mixing it back into the majority of the pile for later use. That way one pile will give you many applications over a longer period of time and applied over larger areas as well.

    • @Newsyeet
      @Newsyeet 2 месяца назад

      @@KTheGuy Thank you very much for your amazing reply. That’s a great suggestion. I understand from few videos that compost teas from bio-complete compost are used as foliar spray. Does that control pests from your personal experience? I understand healthy plants can ward off pests. What was your personal experience with this?

    • @KTheGuy
      @KTheGuy 2 месяца назад

      @Newsyeet teas are great for foliar sprays, I would only employ that method if it was a chronic pest issue. Mainly due to the complexity of tea making. But in my experience pest issues are best addressed and dealt with when adding the microbes directly to the roots and allowing the plant to create its own defensive mechanisms.

    I get why you do not want hot water from a hose, but why cold? I have been using sun warmed rain water when I make extracts, is there a reason why I should stop doing that? A couple off subject question. Been using a lot of chop and drop of comfrey and other materials on my raised beds. How much of the nutrients are actually returned to the soil? I can not get a definitive answer. Will hot composting kill beneficial fungal spores? I never let my hot compost get beyond 160F, try to flip at around 145F. Experimenting with adding mostly finished leaf mold to my resting hot compost to increase the fungal component. Second year using no external imports for my garden. I check my soil amendments, extracts and teas with a microscope, opened a whole new world. One thing that bothers me with a lot of RUclips videos is people are recommending using teas and extracts but not using a microscope, they have no clue what they are producing. Stay Well!!!

    • @KTheGuy
      @KTheGuy 3 месяца назад

      Cold water will have a higher amount of dissolved oxygen. The higher the oxygen amounts we start when making our extracts the longer the period that our beneficial microbes will stay in suspension without any of the “bad guys” coming out of dormancy as oxygen levels start to drop. This is especially crucial when making teas as the temperatures will affect the beneficial microbe growth along a data curve. The amount of nutrients returned to the soil will depend on the health and uptake of the plants cut down. Typically nitrogen levels are higher in spring than fall. If you want more fungal biomass you will need a higher carbon component to your compost, plus the maturation phase which takes time and proper moisture levels to achieve. Microscopy is the only true and verifiable method for determining microbes.

This is where most of your organisms will collect. Trees roots system tend to (not always) only be as wide as the farthest leaf. We want our roots to grow down as far as possible as apposed to out. This allows our plants to tap into more minerals as soil is layers upon layers of different and diverse kinds of materials. This allows for more robust growth and a healthier system that eventually spreads wide and deep.

      @@KTheGuy aha! Thanks, you understood me perfectly; I could not remember drip line. Thanks for the awesome explanation regarding why it would benefit the tree to concentrate effort/solution closer to the stem/trunk. I indeed was thinking it would encourage/reward wide growth and the gathering of beneficials across a larger portion of the area between the trunk and drip-line. I was not thinking about depth of roots in the context that by applying solution and effort closer to the trunk, downward growth is encouraged... Regardless of how deep the solution might go into the soil, by feeding the tree/soil life nearer to the trunk the tree is more likely to continue to strengthen and grow its tap and related roots down and out vs out and perhaps up to get easy nutrients if we put effort at the dripline. I may have taken some leaps here... Even if I got anything wrong it's not because what you shared is unclear. Your explanation was beyond anything I've come to expect on YT. Thank you

    Excellent work... I use a 55 gal food grade trash can, bubble the crap out of it, and hope for the best... I don't have a microscope... Any advice? I'm an 'everything but the kitchen sink kinda guy", so it's humic acid, fish isolate, seaweed extract, high brix molasses, even azomite... Am I overdoing it, or killing it with love? I also like to put everything loose in the barrel... I put a screen bag over an intake to a pump, and pump it through a garden hose all over the place... Any thoughts on the stresses a pump puts on the biology? Impeller forces, sudden pressure changes etc...

      Any pumping mechanism that uses an impeller device will cut the number of organisms down from its original numbers. Same is true with any hard 90 degree turns in the piping to your outlet. I’ve built a passive system for applications in 6’ swaths if you would like I can do a video about that too.

      @@KTheGuy That would be nice... I have a slope I need to move water and such up... If not an impeller, a diaphragm perhaps? 90 degree turns are no problem... It would be pressure and sudden changes also an issue... There are pumps meant to move solution while they add air... Sounds like those are a no no as well...

    Dude!! I would love to see this done after bubbling with an oxygen machine pushing 95% oxygen like grandma’s old machine. I’m curious what the higher purity of oxygen does to the microbes. I think it might be killing off bad bacteria, I’m bubbling a worm casting tea with recharge & Photosyntheses plus for additional microbes. Liquid kelp or simple sugar. WHAT IS THE HIGHER PURITY OF OXYGEN DOING to the microbes when brewing?

      Dissolved oxygen levels are just going to help the environment that keep our selected organisms in the highest numbers for the longest shelf life usually within 24hrs. This is especially crucial when brewing teas as I mentioned about the bell curve to how organisms grow when brewing.

    Dr Ingham changed the way I garden 3 years ago. Pick up a decent microscope, to see exactly what I was putting into my garden. Vermicompost from my natural bedding worm bins is crazy with soil life. New subscriber, Seay Well!!!

    Congratulations on your certification! Please share your project with us. Also, please show us how to prepare the compost tea in a 5 gallon container. Can you also point out the bacteria and nematodes on your microscope slide? How can one determine all the other bacteria, fungi, protozoan, nematodes, etc. present in the compost?

      I will try and get more videos out, you can checkout the other videos I’ve done specifically on organisms as well.

    That was easy. I was going to use J.B. Weld to patch the hole.
