Oberheim TEO-5 - Unboxing and Preset Playthrough
Just got a brand new Oberheim TEO-5 in and thought I'd do another unboxing and preset playthrough video. I know these types of videos are very helpful in making purchase decisions so hopefully it'll help some of you!
My thoughts: This thing sounds huge, raw and organic! You can modulate yourself into oblivion if you want, sequencer is very powerful and the raw tone speaks for itself. I highly recommend!
**Side note - EVERYTHING you hear in this video is the raw tone from the synth. No external effects or plugins were used**

    Yeah definitely sounds like an obie. Wish the button layout was exactly like those of the bigger brothers. Cutoff knob at the low center is...odd. The space for the Tap Tempo button disturbs the visual and placement of the surrounding knobs. The big brothers on the other hand have a properly organized and aesthetically pleasing layout. Sound is great but design could have been better.

    • @Donetur
      @Donetur 3 дня назад

      @@riffsthatrule the OB-X8 seems to sound more massive and vintage than TEO-5 and that’s exactly what I love about it. TEO-5 sounds a little bit more modern?, but it also can sound vintage, not sure what are the possibilities of this machine, I always try not to get an impression from the presets only as the sound may depend on what the sound designer intended only. I am waiting for the demos tweaking knobs and so on, users will start to receive the unit in the next months, so I expect more videos to analyze :). I may need to put my hands on the OB-X8 first before taking that decision. Probably you are right and they will overlap too much for my taste, that’s a possibility I considered, if that’s the case it has no sense to get TEO-5. E7 on the other hand has a unique vintage sound which I love. I also love how Code 8 sounds by Studio Electronics, but this is too expensive for a rack synth, it cost even more than OB-X8, I wouldn’t pay that amount of money if I am not rich.

As far as I know, the TEO-5 does have waaay more modulation options if that’s something you care about! 19 sources and 54 destinations😮. That was one of the many reasons I chose the TEO-5 since the Prophet 5 doesn’t have nearly as many mod options. Just to fill that gap you know. @StrilliVanilliDrums Haha for sure! I’ve heard a lot of people like the “Freak” series. I haven’t tried them though. That’s the best way to go though. Learn what you have inside out before getting new ones. I’m a bit guilty of that😂. Oh man, totally! Those first 3 Resident Evil games for PS1 are in my top favorite games of all time! Same the the first 3 Silent Hill games as well

    It’s because it’s Behringer. When will you people ever learn…. They no longer have a repair center in Sumner, Washington. A friend of mine who used to manage it told me at one point that their policy was for clients with a defective gear to send them a picture of the defective gear in the garbage can and they would send them a new one. That was their repair policy. How cheaply made does the stuff have to be for it to be a better business decision for them to just send you a new one versus fixing an old one? Think about that for a minute. Buy cheap you get cheap.

    Hi, thank you for your very useful videos. I've watched this and your other suggested video about hooking up external keyboards to Reaper but being someone who stopped making any electronic music back in the 90s, I'm still a bit stuck so I hope you wouldn't mind giving me a bit more advice. I have a Yamaha PF85 which I use as a controller and a Roland SoundCanvas as my sound source. I only have a Roland UM-One USB MIDI interface with one in and one out. How can I have Reaper record my MIDI information, i.e. what I play on the keyboard but play back my chosen sounds from the sound module. I would be very grateful for your advice. Cheers.

    • @riffsthatrule
      @riffsthatrule 24 дня назад

      Of course! I’m glad you’ve found them helpful. If you’ve followed both of the videos that should honestly get you up and running. As long as you’re using usb midi like you said and follow all the steps in both. I set up my synth modules just like how you described, to a master keyboard. As long as your PF85 is usb midi it should be plug and play. Then you would connect your module(s) via 5 pin midi to your PF85 more than likely. If you have a bunch of different modules hooked up then you just select a different midi channel for each one instead of “all channels” like I choose in the videos. Hope this helps!

      @@riffsthatrule Just an update regarding my initial enquiry (anybody who hasn't got anything better to do with their lives can check it out above - it's really basic), I eventually managed to hook up my gear, by connecting the Out of the MIDI-to-USB adaptor to the out of my controller keyboard and the In of the convertor to my external sound source. This makes sense as you send your messages, i.e. what you play to the DAW and to listen back to your masterpiece, with the sound of your choice, you receive the MIDI messages back from the computer. Great, it works. However, I still have a problem. What you record in this way is just MIDI information and not actual sounds. In your video you create three tracks, on one of which you record the MIDI information and on the other you kind of bounce the MIDI track as audio; and I don't understand what the first track is used for. Would you be so kind to explain the routing of the signals from the MIDI to the audio track? Many thanks indeed. 😊

    • @riffsthatrule
      @riffsthatrule 11 дней назад

      Glad to hear you’re making progress! As far as the routing goes, that’s all covered in the video but the third track at the top of the group just acts as a folder to group the tracks together to keep things nice and organized. If you’re recording lots of layers, things can get messy real quick so I find using folders really helps.

    When you do this solo stuff over a chord progression, do you just switch to the respective chord (its tonic)? What if, for ex., the minor 3rd in the minmaj7 arpeggio conflicts woth whatevrr chord is being played? You just omit that shape and use something else right? Do you remember every shape or just learn the intervals and their respective location on the board while also learning what notes are able to be played over each chord? How then do people improvise over changes while still sounding in key?

    • @riffsthatrule
      @riffsthatrule 25 дней назад

      In this particular example, I’m only playing chord tones so every note is a perfect match for each respective chord. Start with chord tones only over each chord and slowly start adding extensions when you feel ready. I started as a heavily shape based player but over the many years I’ve gravitated towards interval based playing. It’s much more useful for writing and improvising. As far as improvising over changes, there are many different approaches: key center approach (all chords belong to the same key/use one scale), treat each chord as it’s own key (this takes much more fretboard knowledge but is well worth it as it leads to tastier choices), etc…
