    this game had one of the worst dialogue / word choices in english I've ever seen come out of a JRPG. The stuff they said most the time was laughably bad and dumb. Gallica was annoying and when she became emotional just dumb or violent. The choice prompts for dialogue never come out how you expect them. You get tired after constantly hearing your companions say some form of "wake up" or "look around you". Felt lazy

    Having finished the game in jp and now halfway through NG+ in eng, I can say that the eng localization is great. I would even say the delivery of some lines are even more impactful in the eng dub. While it's not perfect by any sense, I absolutely love how they decide to have different tribes to speak with different accents. This is simply not possible in Japanese, at least not to the same extent.

    I understand a bit of spoken japanese and it always baffles me how different the personality and demeanor of the characters come off on the localized vs original text. Why do they do that? I know that localization is not supposed to be a direct translation of each word, but why are you rewritting the characters?

    • @negikogok

      No one's "rewriting the characters", some expressions were rephrased because no one speaks like that in eng and that's all. The "understand a bit" part is exactly why you're feeling this way. Play the game for yourself.

Thanks to localization I can understand the story similarly to everyone else. One curiosity that I had as I played it was how was the character's accents handled in the Japanese dub? How its handled in the English dub feels so organic. I could probably find a better word for it but thats the best I can think of.

    I get that localizing is necessary to an extent since not everything translates over well from Japanese in terms of meaning or sentence structure. But localizers shouldn't treat games like they own them and change words or change characters' personalities too much, not to mention adding in their own politics. I can only imagine how much they changed in a game that actually is about politics and race. They already decided to change race to tribe for no reason.

    4:50 Yeah, this is why I'm fine with most gals/gyarus in anime saying things like "oh em gee" or "bee tee dubs", because they're pretty similar to what we would call "valley girls," and saying acronyms out loud like that is fairly normal for characters like that in our own media. Generational slang should definitely be taken into consideration, though. Ranma 1/2 quite emphatically takes place in the 80s, so I can understand 80s slang showing up, but hearing someone say rizz or skibidi would be incredibly stupid. And then there's video games, which take way longer to make and localize in comparison to a single episode of an anime, meaning that slang and meme culture could have easily moved on to entirely new things by the time the game drops.

    @Dice-Z Месяц назад

    1:50 Yeah that's just not how translating works. That's not translating, that's converting words from one language to the other literally. No translator or translation does it. The issue with localizations is that they specifically DON'T translate into the closest equivalent meaning, but something entirely different that is supposed to preserve the general tone, yet sometimes completely rewrites it into something that has nothing to do with the original's tone, character's personality, or even story relevant info. These day localizers will often shoehorn in their own political ideologies and ingroup jargon where it is completely inappropriate and erroneous towards the original meaning. This is what pisses people off. It's often used for censorship aswell (localization isn't just voice/text, but also image, like replacing a cigarette with a lollipop). And of course where there are people who disagree for good reasons, there are people who start disagreeing just for the sake of being antagonistic, acting like all localization is the devil itself. But localization is something else entirely from translation, the point of localization isn't to convey the same meaning, it's to make a scene understandable, acceptable, digestible and familiar for another culture. You sound like you're mixing them up. The whole point is to change the meaning to another meaning, in a way that is supposed to enhance the work for the target audience, which it rarely does. Bad localization will do shit like having a character holding up a riceball saying "mmmm i sure like those jelly filled donuts!" as if westerners could not possibly conceive what a ball made of rice is. It's having a character love one thing in the original, and somehow hate it in the other. Or have a polite character go from "This guy was scary" to "Fam, we need to curbstomp incels frfr". There are obscure things, idioms, concepts, etc... that makes complete sense to localize, but that's not the thing people complain about (save for the contrarians i mentioned above). In fact it's great when localizers take a joke or pun that would make no sense translated, yet manage to turn it into another joke that keeps the same spirit but still is hilarious. But also it's great when translators will just not localize and leave a translator note about the context (something you used to see a lot in old fansubs, and is used a lot for mangas aswell). Localization is pretty important, it's just that modern localizers are terrible 90% of the time, at least in animes. What little i've seen of metaphor seemed alright, though.

    • @ShadowKnightXero
      @ShadowKnightXero Месяц назад

      Well said, this is the thing a lot of people seem to misinterpret when we say we want better localization. To add on to your last point, there's a big problem with a lot of localizers (not ALL, let's make that clear) bragging about changing context of things entirely then insulting anyone who simply calls it out, it's gotten a bit out of hand lately.

Sometimes the characters just talk for a long while but the translation is just "yeah" or the other way around. Who do these translators think are playing their games? Lobotomites? How hard is it to just make it 1 to 1? Even I can do it, the only downside is that sometimes the grammar or vocabulary is strange but anyone with a functioning frontal lobe could infer the meaning.

  • @Minyobi083
    @Minyobi083 Месяц назад

    I've been playing JRPGs for decades cause I'm ancient like that. There has to be some level of localization or the dialogue will suffer. Japanese and English (for example) aren't grammatically 1 to 1, so things can get out of hand very fast if the language isn't managed. There is a forgotten generation of terrible fan translations out there. All of it is a half-step away from Samurai Showdown 1 character banter. Overreaching localizers are always unfortunate. That said, using Metaphor as an example for that is ridiculous. Call me when they go full Lunar (Sega CD) localization and mention current day, active politicians in the game.

  • @DemianCorvus
    @DemianCorvus Месяц назад

    There are also some cases when a game is localized in English, but not in other languages. Considering English is a language more approachable in West than Japanese, localization can end up appealing to a subset of players. Sometimes the original translation could even resonate more closely to that audience than the localized one, and I believe this to be the case for South America, since most of Japanese content we consume we do so with subtitles or localized directly from the source into Spanish, thus making the English dub and localization a little cringe-worthy. So, while I do understand why localization exists, I think due to globalization, English should approach it with translation in mind more than localization. English versions of games end up being the "global version", thus defeating the purpose behind localization, since your "local" now includes the literal rest of the world.

    • @NightWolfx_YT

      Yeah when localizations are only for American English speakers, that's extremely limiting. It would be my hope that all regions have translations that can cater to them at some point. Translate game, read through translation, if parts of the translation do not translate correctly do minimal localisation. Do like for like localisation. Avoid adding descriptive words that are not at all present in the original text. Example, if in japanese they are using a metaphor, however, the metaphor doesnt work when translated then localise the metaphor with another metaphor that captures the intent. In the case of ff7 remake, they decided to put their own spin on the character as they did not know (nor trust) that this "sky" held very serious meaning. They added to descriptions and adjectives. How many other times was this done? Keep modern political terms out of the games (unless the game is about said political issues). The issue with having terms like these in your translation is that you are inviting problems, so dont do it.
