08 August, 2024 Day 47
96 Miles Today, 2611 for the Trip
Kewanee, IL to Odell, IL
Decided to push a longer day today and tomorrow to cut a day off of Section 8. The terrain has been pretty flat and the weather has been really nice. I wish I could go farther, but my butt gives out first.
Staying in the Odell park tonight. Has bathrooms and a convenience store close by.
Tomorrow is probably going to be around 90 miles to got to a motel. Looks pretty flat
09 August, 2025 Day 48
92 Miles Today, 2703 for the Trip
Odell, IL to Rensselaer, IN
Another long day on the road. Had a pleasant ride in good weather. The route didn’t have any lodging opportunities so I had to go off rout...

I told myself I wouldnt comment as I think I have commented on most of your videos. But I have lots of questions being that Im planning the Southern Tier after retirement. Im 60 now so I have some time to plan. But here is the question…What is the audio sound from your bike computer that is quite often caught on video? Is it alarming to a course change? I have a basic Garmin that I just use for my time and distance. Thanks again for taking the time and doing these videos. I know I appreciate them very much.
Heyya, thanks for watching. Yeah, the little beeps and boops you hear are either turn notifications OR , if I'm using my radar/rear blinky light, a notification that it sees a car behind me. The radar can see a car from about 100 yards behind me with no obstructions. They're two different beeps. The Garmin I use will warn me that a turn is coming around 1/4 mile before I get to the turn and again when I reach the spot to turn.
Nice work avoiding that ferocious canine attack!
@@andykluiter4109 haha
My father came from Eau Claire, my mom from north of there. The landscape felt familiar somehow. Thanks Dan!
...cool old wood bridges...do most bike trails have a fee?...
@@boblewis7810 most do not have a fee. I only encountered fee trails in Wisconsin. I spoke to a local and he said they don’t really patrol and works on the honor system. I bought a pass while I was riding.
Kamaha’o. Keep them coming Daniel,
Wonderful! Thanks Dan!
I loved the still photos at the end!
Another awesome video. I know it takes a lot of your time doing this! Do all these turns show up on your bike computer? Or are you kind of following the paper map? You might have hit that in the Q and A and I missed it. I have a basic Garmin computer as I only ride local…I have not grasped the concept of following a route on the Garmin yet….might have to get a better bike computer. Thanks again.
@@danielprice9997 Thanks for watching, it’s been a fun labor of love putting these together and if it inspires someone to go out and try a long trip on their bike, all the better. On navigation, I can’t recommend the Adventure Cycling Association maps enough. I’d never skimp on navigation on a long trip like this, plus the money you spend goes to a great cause. I used the ACA Northern Tier map set on my ride and I spend a little extra to get the electronic files that you can load up in your bike GPS. I think pretty much all Garmin Units can use GPX files for guidance. I used the bike computer for primary guidance while I was riding, and I backed up what I saw with the paper maps. The paper maps are really great for trip planning since they include all the info you need about lodging, camping, resupply etc., all right there. No need to do any additional research. Later on in the series, I go off route at Buffalo and use Google Maps for bikes, and you’ll get an idea on the issues there for sure. Thanks for watching. More coming up soon.
That wind had to be so mentally draining…
Another epic episode. On one of my rides, I rode the first 60 miles into a similar head wind. It was after a 120 mile day!
Thanks Dan. You are so generous to share all of this. I am loving every minute, except maybe the tornado.
This video helps me to miss you and Honolulu less. Those places seemed so familiar to me even though I was only there for ten days about a year and a half ago. ❤😊
@@passonthering yes! You’re always welcome to visit.
This was very informational. Ive commented before, but these videos are great. Im retiring in a year and want to do the Southern Tier. Im soaking all this information in! The thing that has impressed me the most has been your daily distances. Im an avid road cyclist but Im not sure I could do those distances day after day. My hats off to you. Thanks again. Looking forward to the next video.
@@danielprice9997 Thanks much! I think on my next ride, I’m going to take it a little easier and do lower mileage per day. I had the idea in my head to finish it in 10 weeks and needed to get back to work. Probably caused me to push harder than I wanted to. A lot of my footage doesn’t show me entering the towns for the night since I was so exhausted, I didn’t even want to turn on the camera.
@@danielprice9997 I’m planning the TransAmerica Trail for 2026, putting my lessons learned toward that ride.
Nice one, Dan. How vast is the mid-west!
Hi Daniel, what would you say is your average speed in mph on most days? Thanks for the work you put into these videos! Glad you rested on the “rest” day.
It varies a lot depending on terrain, but for planning purposes I would use 10mph average and that would give me a pretty accurate estimate of how long it would take to get me to the next location including the ride time and rest stops. If you talking about moving average, I would say probably around 12-13mph. Thanks for watching!
...back-to-back 100+ mile days...wow......
Go, Daniel!!!
Time to catch up on some episodes!
...congrats on 1000 miles...gee, that wind...
Are you able to relax on rest days? Or are you like me and do project after project instead of resting? That was a long day to Great Falls!
@@danielprice9997 haha. I think I’m like you and end up getting chores done. I make sure I unload my bike if I have to ride around. I guess I’ve been lucky that nobody messed with my stuff while I was camping.
WHOA! That is one big chunk of miles! You are a BEAST!!!
I might of missed it…but what kind of bike?
@@danielprice9997 thanks for checking out my ride. The bicycle is a Priority 600. Modified it with 700x32 wheels and tires to make it better for road riding, Jones Bar and specialized pedals. Old man mountain racks. It’s the bike that I usually commute to work.
Dang! You are going to be in Montana for a WHILE! Pedal on!!!
Go, Daniel!!!
So beautiful!
Nice ❤
So gorgeous and inspiring!!! The scenery ain’t too shabby either! 😊❤
It’s been fun revisiting this trip. Working on a bunch more.
My favorite thing on RUclips for sure! Must see TV!
So much glorious scenery! I am loving these videos! ❤❤❤
...tfs...well done video(s)...
You meet the nicest people out in the middle of nowhere!! Enjoying these episodes Dan, seeing the route through your camera lens brings back so many memories.
Thanks for checking it out. I’ve only been back for a month and it’s hard to believe that I actually did the trip. Working on these videos has been really fun bringing all those memories back up. I’m glad you’re enjoying them. I’m trying to get a 3 or so out a week.
Another epic episode! 🥰
