How I Learned To Love Horizon Zero Dawn – A Personal Deep Dive
Happy New Year. Horizon Zero Dawn is a game that never shined to me. But as I learned and saw this franchise grow, I've come to appreciate this game and what it has to offer. It isn't perfect at what it does, but it does a lot right that I've come to love better. In this video, I go over the components of gameplay and story and how, through its shortcomings, I Learned To Love Horizon Zero Dawn. I hope you enjoy this deep dive.

XDefiant: The Tragic End of a Promising Game

Hello everyone xdefiant is a game that had a lot of promise for Ubisoft but within six months it couldn't make up for it and was cut short due to a lot of reasons I explored that and the game's new content more specifically the game Assassins creed content. The game had a lot of promise. With this new update so it's sad to see it not be able to reach it in anyway. It has multiple new factions, ...
Marvel Rivals: The Game-Changer For Hero Shooters

Hey everyone while I work on bigger projects I wanted to talk about Marvel Rivals for some time. It isn't a review but it is something I felt deserved to have a deeper conversation more than anything about it being an Overwatch clone. I believe it can set a new standard that can redefine the hero shooter genre with its incredibly strong foundation of diverse heroes. Level design and such I want...

Hello Everyone Alan Wake 2 is one of the best games I've ever played in my eyes. And I believe it's the perfect ending chapter to the perfect era. I hope you all en...

My Initial Thoughts on Watchdogs Legion
Still waiting for that PvE.
Yes, it is. Even in 2025.
As long as companies are led by managers whose only dream in life is to be allowed to lick the sweat off of the gooches of the shareholders in exchange for milking every penny imaginable from their customers, games will be or will shortly after release become, trash.
My only question is: now we know what happened to Ed Booker, but what happens to Tammy?
Personally my favourite game, visually the best game in my opinion I’ve always loved it and always will, so much fun and if you actually listen to the story and put it together yourself it’s super interesting. I never got how people don’t like this game and dislike it I’ve always loved it but people have their own perspective on what they like.
I actually found all cells first try. Bc I was really esquizofrenic jajajaja
Horizon zero dawn is quite complex with lots of mechanics going on in the background, heck, the official strategy guide is over 800 pages!
We need a Rost prequel game now. Dude is a beast
The combat in this game is so much fun. At first, you feel like your bows just can't do much to the enemies. Then, you learn to study the machines and to make use of your tools efficiently. I feel like it's a wall that many players encounter with the game (as I did), but after that, it gets so much more interesting. The remaster vastly improved the character models and animations as well. The sequel is just as good as a package too. It improved upon many aspects like the combat, visuals, etc., although it also went too far in some places like how much more tedious the systems feel, puzzle design that doesn't give you options and how slow Aloy recovers in combat. I feel like both games are about the same score, where HZD is very consistent, while HFW has very high peaks and quite a few lows. These are my opinions as a gamer who derives joy mostly from gameplay. I think the story and worldbuilding in this game are pretty good too. I hope that if there will be future installments, that they make the experience leaner/streamlined by reducing the gameplay clutter, study FromSoft games when it comes to combat mechanics (e.g. hitboxes, challenging BUT FAIR combat), and hopefully more well written stories to tell.
While zero dawn is a game I don't replay often, I still remember how amazing that first playthrough was. It resonated with me so much, in both a story and gameplay sense. I hope I can play the sequel someday soon, if I can ever afford a ps5.
The sequel should be available on ps4! Glad you resonated with the game.
It seems I am now subscriber 818. Hoping you get to 1000 and this video is a big part of that. With regard to the Horizon franchise...when I discovered Zero Dawn (about 4 years ago) I was a very random gamer...I enjoyed playing...but nothing captured me. Then came Zero Dawn. I found myself struggling to quit each gaming session because I wanted to learn "one more thing". Full disclosure I'm also an OLD gamer being 63 now. I was totally captured by Zero Dawn. True some of the side quests were a bit middling...but Tallnecks, Cauldrons, shooting freaking robot Dinos...and that story. I played ZD all the way through Ultra Hard (my 4th play through). Then came The Frozen Wilds...wow...I still think Frozen Wilds is Guerrlla Games best work. Then came Forbidden West...virtually everything is improved...but...the story is good, but NOT ZD good. Then Burning Shores...ok...but much less than Frozen Wilds. I just finished the remaster. I've created a spreadsheet that lists everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) you can do in both games (including data points, special weapons, special outfits, etc.,). I've "toyed" with other games...but always find my way back into the world of Horizon. There are times I just go and wander around taking in the beauty. I love the Shield Wing glider in Forbidden West and have spent hours climbing high in the mountains...just to glide down. I've also suffered "death by gravity" more times than I want to admit too when I go back and play ZD. Thank for an excellent video.
Thank you for sharing your experience it means a lot to me to know people like yourself can engage with the game this way. Glad you enjoyed the videoz
I loked it. It was definitely a girl power game but it wasnt super offensive to male players by making all of the men useless, stupid or just evil. They had their role, she had hers. Decently engaging story. Not the vest gameplay but what is? TLOU gameplay sucked and id call it the best game ever made.
I thought the pacing in HZD was absolutely perfect. I like that it went from linear to open world and back to linear again as the main story became more important for the player to understand. This is one of the best written stories I have ever seen in a videogame
It was a good balance It just the way information was presented wasn’t all that interesting or engaging to me.
I can relate to your views, the game took a while to grow on me. The story is quite complex and very well put together. The more you practice the combat the more fun it gets. I'm on my second playthrough. No game will appeal to everyone, thats just the nature of personal preference. For me the game is comfort food, and has become my favourite of all time
how i learned to love a good game...... truly groundbreaking work here guy
Clear to me you didn’t watch the video 🥱
I love horizon, for me is better than god war, 2018/Ragnarok, the game is so fun to play. The final boss of the dlc burning shores was so good.
Hey, just a veteran gamer here and amateur writer... HZD is an overhyped Amazingly PRetty Piece of shit game with failed mechanics, clashing game design and the most insufferable protagonist who is more set out to teach the "savages" about feminism than the secrets, she ALONE magically uncovered. And before you flag me as a "woman-hater" I love almost every major and minor Marvel Superhero female lead. I love every iteration of Lara Croft, Carmen Sandiego, Cate Archer, Senua, Samus Aran, Konoko from Oni, Jade from BG&E and many way better written characters, including major female leads in other medium of entertainment, namely Star Wars. Aloy is insufferable, entitled brat, that has the whole world rigged for her to WIN. She never loses. The game presents seemingly complex "systems" of fighting, but they are all trash as only few peak over anything else (freeze and phys dmg combo) It is suffering from open-worlditis, and while it explains why the tribe is "multi-culti" it makes no sense that they evolved to preserve indiginous races while mixing over centuries. Its agenda and virtue signaling is so great, it eclipses a very mediocre world-building and setting. Lance Reddick was the high point of the game and it was sorely wasted on a side char that only gets a spot light a bit too late. A perfect Mary Sue protagonist, made from the DNA of "perfect woman" to save the world. Trash game. Trash mechanics, trash storytelling
@@Kserijaro how are you going to say she “alone” uncovered it when in the narrative I broke down in this video. She had help from sylens. A character I actually called out for being a person who I felt was only made to help aloy. You can have your own opinion that is fine but there is so many more layers I could go over but you seemingly don’t care to acknowledge as you live in your echo chamber.
@@berice4390 No, no one helped Aloy figure out the truth, she slipped to her death but plot armor demanded she is "investigative child" that just popped the User Interface dongle where she saw the corpse wear it, learning that everything is just ancient tech and that there are no gods. This was Aloy when she was 3 years old. She then goes on a rampage to insult and attack everyone and anyone cus she FEELS they belittle her cus she is a "Woman" You are the one in echo chamber, taking factual facs and disregarding them. Aloy is insufferable, bratty, spoiled Mary Sue with the whole world MADE for her to be BEST in. ITs a crappy game and you cant deny this
@@Kserijaro Complaining about plot armor in games - really ?? Just finished RE 4 - for hundreth time and the plot armor Leon has is ridiculous at times but no one is complaining because it is a game - it is an unreal convention where a protagonist is placed in an impossible situation and yet emerges victorious. But what is strange is your - and other people that hate Horizon - sense of mission that you have to comment under videos you do not like just to make sure that everyone has heard them. I heard you and disagree - both Horizon games are great. You probably think you are on some crusade dude - but you are just funny. BTW - you could spend your time more productively by learning for example that a noun 'fact' has no need for adjective 'factual' placed before PLUS - do not be so scared of women - someone will want you eventually.
@@Kserijaro there no example of aloy being persecuted in anyway because she is a women in game. And that being the driving force for anything. You are delusional if you think other wise. The only way she feels what she feels is because she is an outcast. Which I explained in depth why this works as a driving force for how she is. Also she was SIX years old when she found the focus. as I said in the video not three. So it tells me even more you only hear what you want to hear to fuel this narrative of yours in your head.
@@berice4390 She behaves like that. Did you even play the game? She outright has moments where she starts fighting with people asking them "IS IT BECAUSE I AM A WOMAN??" Please stop bulshiting. Three/ six it doesnt really matter, she was a kid that was supposed to die from that massive drop in a random ass convenient hole made for her to fall into and survive. And yes, she is INSUFFERABLE. You played the game, and pretend the bad parts didn't happen and now are defending it with all your might. Game was mid and that is me being light on it. Overall its a bad game through and through and you will never get it because your mental taste buds are accustomed to DEI/THEM corpo goop shit that you cant even Identiy an entitled Mary sue. THe game wants me to belive that noone before her used a focus or found it. THe fact she is made from "most inteligent human" and its offcourse a female is indicative of the fantasy. And let me help you out, what ever you say to defend this POS game just cements it harder objectively to me as a bad game. Good games need no defense force or "explain" Its a bad game and I hope you wake up and play some good games to understand this
I disagree. It takes the same tired Ubisoft open world formula and slaps a robot dinosaurs skin on top. It is boring game design with a map littered with icons. I found Horizon as mid as they get. Not sure why Sony keeps trying to push this franchise. Look at that Lego game 🤦🏻♂
I don’t know what it is you’re disagreeing on as I just explained why I love it. You are free to feel that way though
Thank you for defending her personality 😭💖 people always say she has no charisma, but like, dude have you SEEN her life??
Yeah I was baffled by that criticism a lot, Glad I stuck the landing when explaining it. So thank you
nice video... just finished this game myself for the 1st time a few days ago - still fresh in my mind. sub'ed 😀
15:30 Granted I don't have the remastered version, only the original on PS4, but I've never noticed the Reverent Irid having a beard and mustache before.
I believe they actually changed or enhanced models entirely in the remaster. I think a few characters looks different in areas I just can’t remember them.
i tried to like Horizon series, played the HZD and HFW till the end, heck i even tried to dive in again with HZD Remaster, but in the end its just not clicking with me, ended up trade the remaster with Returnal, and i never look back
I think indeed this game is a flawed masterpiece.I liked the ending to Zero Dawn much more than Forbidden West. For the 3rd game I hope they resolve that crisis early and move onto something else. The games are beautiful, but yes hoping for more in 3.
I'm a look goblin so I did actually find the battery at makers end. I like checking every corner for loot and it was easy to see the way up. I definitely agree with others here that a lot of your issues with the game are just looking at things differently. Baring a few, the nora side quests usually do have tie ins through either aloy being a seeker or are helping people in general. There are ones like the ring and 4 boar skins in mother's crown where it really doesn't make sense to ask us and then there's that trio that went for revenge and two ended up in a forsaken place.
I think it can be a bit varied depending on what you’re talking about. I think in terms of gameplay forbidden west clears in every sense of the way. It feels like it took a lot of lessons and applied it phenomenally. Which to me furthers my point on how I felt the progression wasn’t all that engaging. Everything else I have seen some points that made me rethink a bit but I’ll come to that when I make a relevant video.
These games don't require defense. They're great, full stop. They're targeted by grifters and memes because those morons can't handle a leading woman with complex emotions and storytelling that they can't relate with. Nothing will ever change the FACT that the Horizon series is successful and important, and that's all that matters
God, give me an action-shooter game where you are part of the resistance vs the horde. That time period is super ripe for exploring.
Wait you are cooking. Like that’s actually perfect for this developer team
For the algorithm. Your analysis was very fair. I loved this game too. More for the atmosphere and the way I felt playing more than anything else. It was a world I looked forward spending time in, just to relax sometimes and explore, or other times more focussed on progression. It’s a great story and a satisfying conclusion.
You should never have to learn to love a game.. Entertainment is like comedy..it either hits or it doesn't.. I love HZDs story, lore and world..but the gameplay just felt like a chore.. I ended u watching the story on youtube because i couldn't go on any more
Sucks for you. You missed out
I mean I made the video
So you enjoyed the game by not falling for the morons with a mouth and just… playing the game? Glad you discovered it - but man, how much better it would have been if you didn’t play the sequel (with spoilers). Elden Ring by the way, still sucks balls in the graphics department. It has a great story but proves that a great story can be ruined by developers who are too lazy to innovate. Not that they need to. They have so many fanbois it doesn’t matter how much the graphics suck. I only got it coz my kids wanted it (and they love to follow the meta on ‘popular games’) … and I try to get into it when I can… but I can’t get past the lazy graphics, the “HUGE” world (that’s plenty for empty) and the mobs that spawn in the same place which makes it definitely feel like plenty empty. Weird, because I absolutely love StellarBlade which has the same stuff - but with graphics a thousand times better, controls that feel more responsive (like Horizon-like responsive) and … well, bewbs.
Maybe I wasn’t clear in the intro. I played through horizon once before playing forbidden west. Played forbidden west and got back into zero dawn after loving forbidden west. Elden ring is a very specific case I think it can do a lot for a lot of people and of course has a lot of backing. (I never finished it) I always thought the criticisms were never in good faith
I loved HZD, unfortunately I cant say the same of FW. :/
That’s interesting I’ll have to look into that more when I get to forbidden west
Too bad, your loss.
Super interesting to hear from someone who dislikes my favourite part of the game - the way the world's lore gets presented - and what actively makes me think it's a great game that rises above a lot of others. Cool video. Agree with a lot of the points made, regarding Aloy's personality.
Great game. Most male characters are intentionally weak af, but they are all built like a tank
48:00 exactly the opposite for me, I can't express how much I wanted Forbidden West to end, it drags on and on and on, I don't care about all the backwards tribes with their fake religions, I want philosophical discussion out of my scifi setting, I was as annoyed by all of them as Aloy was. The whole lore stuff in Zero Dawn was so much more interesting to me, the monstrousness of the whole Zero Dawn project as a solution to the idiocy of mankind in general and Faro in particular.
That’s interesting of you to say *aloy* was annoyed? Especially when In los Vegas with the delvers I felt she really connected with people.
@@berice4390 might be projection but I always had the feeling she just wanted to get on with her life while people were constantly either hitting on her and/or telling her about their world view that she knows is based on non-sense interpretations of misunderstood technology. She has basically raised herself in all things that Rost had no concept of with the help of her focus. Sure the inventor delver dude was of interest because she's a curious inventive person herself and it helped her with her quest. She couldn't get away fast enough from most other conversations, though. She got more used to her friends in Forbidden West but I didn't find the part of gathering your allies all that compelling tbh.
@@bepkororoti8019I think forbidden west was aloy learning how to better be apart of that world. It’s a natural evolvement of those things and I kinda touch on that disconnect here. We get to dive deep into them and are able to litteraly and figuratively break it down in a way. Like the boulder at the mountain tribe (I forgot the name) it’ll be a minute till I get to forbidden west but I’ll make note of your comments
@@berice4390fw is about aloy learning that she can't do everything on her own, that she needs to let other people help her She goes from running off on varl to letting him and zo join her to having no objections when varl says he's bringing in erend and finally to accepting people (kotallo and alva) and realisng they can help her There's even the regalla invite (depending on choice) which I feel like zd/start of fw aloy would never even think of
@@andrejv.2834yep yep yep all of this
Horizon Zero Dawn was a love/hate kinda thing for me. I tried the game 3 times and always stopped when I reached Meridian. It did not click for me. When I saw the long ass ways to the next missions through hundreds of machines it was just too tedious for me. I really wanted to play and love the game but I couldn't. The game does a very, very good job in sparking an interest for the story. Why was Aloy an outcast? What happened to Rost? Why did they find her in All-Mothers-Heart? I really wanted to know the story so I searched for a RUclipsr to watch the entire thing instead of going through it myself. But after just a couple of hours I was soooo mad at myself that I wasn't "able" to play it myself because the game is stunning and engaging and I really, really wanted to experience it for myself. So I got the remastered, started a fourth game just last week and a few days later I had platinumed the game. And I love it. It was an amazing journey and I am so glad that I got around, kicked myself in the butt and tried it again. I am now playing Forbidden West and I feel like I enjoy it even more. Great games. And great video!
Hope you enjoy forbidden west I’m glad that you got around to zero dawn in a rather similar fashion as myself.
Super fair and balanced critique bro
Same! Exactly this! It took me a while to fully appreciate this game. I would skip the unnecessary dialogue play on easy mod and mainline the main missions. It wasn’t till recently I got the game on pc remastered. Only then I got into the story and the lore. Watching people speed run this game and critiques made m want to play more for the good things and avoids the bad things mentioned in those videos.
Subscribing because Horizon is my favorite game/world and you clearly have given it a lot of thought and respect. Also, I want you to get to that 1000 subscriber mark. Now that I've said that, I want to tell Sony to suck it for taking access away from so many people suddenly when they took it out of their catalog.
Wait yeah that’s crazy I didn’t realize this was a thing. Thanks for the support and understanding of my perspective.
@berice4390 I have since purchased both games again, so I guess they win.
I appreciate you expanding on the reasons why parts of the story fell flat to you. I know it doesn't land with some people but it's rare to see someone try to explain it rather than just 'Aloy boring'. It's interesting as many of the things you saw as shortcomings are things I saw as strengths in the story. The whole set of Nora initial subquests being so detached - it gave me a sense of the isolation Aloy had. She's 18, she has been shunned all her life so the only people she has spoken to are Rost and maybe a couple of others who are kinda on the outside themselves. The Nora are an insular people and being exiled and cut off from the tribe is probably a death sentence for most. The fact that Aloy helped those in the subquests at the start spoke more about her and her sense of justice (despite the injustice to her) than it needed to about how the Nora felt about the red raids, etc. We then saw more complex interactions (and ones where Aloy was actually interested in what was going on around her) once she started encountering people outside of the ones that isolated her (and still acted like they might get struck by lightning talking to her) and her world opened up. She started to be treated like a person, and I love the progression in Erend first seeing her as a hot girl to impress and then as an actual person. These were also people that didn't shun technology in the way the Nora did but tinkered, which aligned with the focus being her only constant companion as a child. All this kind of grabbed me from the start, setting up Aloy being a remarkably strong willed individual thanks to Rost but also one that had a pretty broken world view. I can see how if it didn't engage you like this from the start it'd feel a very different game going forward and maybe the personal quest of a young woman asking 'Who am I?' and it's counterpoint of the revelations of the past might not have had the same dual gut punch I had.
@@alangarde2928 very much appreciate the kind words. You also gave me a bit to think about in regards to the Nora side quests I can appreciate them a bit in this front. how it evolves in a way. It’s actually kind of smart, making you want *more* out of these people. But you can’t because you are in a limited position. Something I wish I emphasized was the main revelations while impactful in their own way. Told you go to different parts of the map to get to them and it just felt monotonous at points? I enjoyed it more now due to balancing it with side quests and engaging with the systems more. But on my first time it just felt un engaging and broke the pacing for me. It didn’t help that some of things were predictable to me and I was just kind of waiting for things to go along. I think if anything all things considered it worked out well enough and as this video tried to elaborate I appreciate what the game does as it does feel genuine and it leads to forbidden west which I’m excited to dive into.
Please share. I can’t get into this game at all. Dinosaurs bore me and robots bore me. This game has robotic dinosaurs
Game may not be for you my guy 😅
Wow, most of the commenters on this video are such assholes. Good video, and I agree. Haven’t finished the game yet, but I enjoy the gameplay (especially traversal) a lot, so I pick it back up whenever I’m in the mood for it. Also, I understand why people don’t like Frey, but I gotta say, I actually quite like her, but that’s probably because I feel like I basically was her for a few years of my life (during a really bad time in my life, when my mental health was at its worst). Her attitude and way she acts makes perfect sense to me, after everything she’s been through, and being isekai-d to another world isn’t going to suddenly cure her mental health issues and traumas. The way she acts towards others is explained by this, the lashing out and warped perception of others despite how helpful they’re trying to be (but I blame the execution/writing, which definitely could have been better), it’s all in service of a faulty defense mechanism that sees all people as possibly out to hurt her, something that can’t just be ignored or willed away as it’s always in her head (I speak from experience, sadly).
Appreciate the comment. Putting yourself out there like that is brave, glad you are past that stage in life. Thank you for sharing hope you keep enjoying the game and what it has to offer.
so you don't really like this game, all the lore with the old ones and how and why the old world ended cause of all the sighing when you in depth in the story.
@@norma8686 I liked the game I just became tired explaining it. I feel as though it doesn’t make the most engaging video. I also did praise it when it got interesting and compelling. But as I said the lore was mainly presented in a way that didn’t resonate with me. Or was predictable to me. I do like the lore. I understand why it was perhaps designed in this way. But I can still like something and be annoyed by an aspect of its presentation. It isn’t so black and white. There is more to the game then its lore, that I feel I gave its fair credit.
Maybe I will learn smth, because rn I see it as being a mid game with the only good part being the story
Hope you did 👌🏾
@berice4390 Emmm, sadly no. I still think enemies are damage spunges and gemplay in gemeral is a bit boring
Fair enough, I think I embrace the flaws of it and they help inform the improvements of forbidden west. Which I plan to make a video on.
@berice4390 Will gladly watch it
I didn't have to return to makers end on my first play through because I prioritised getting resources that might make me over powered before playing the story missions until I was locked out of regions for lack of story progression. The irony is I didn't know what the batteries were for until right before the final battle. Still take my like and sub. Great video.
Haha cheers man thanks for the support
Being Dutch HZD is a bit of an oddity as this is the biggest cultural production to ever come out of the Netherlands in terms of budget. I played it and had a very good time, I thought the combat was very sharp apart from the undercooked melee, the worldbuilding was a bit predictable but very cool and everything was just quite well done beyond that. Not exactly a masterpiece, but just a very nice 8/10 AAA game. When it dropped though I felt it was getting the short stick based on thin air. It was constantly compared to Zelda, which I had also played and I mean I feel like people were just suffering from some sort of collective brainrot on that one. Like you'll have people not liking the HZD story, ok well it's better than Zelda. People felt the combat was off, well ok it's better than Zelda. They didn't like the quests, well at least there's more variety and just fidelity than you'd get in Zelda etc etc. The one thing Zelda had was this atmosphere of emptiness and a genuinely creative way to use its physics engine. Well ok, I was not fond of the atmosphere but it exists and the physics is indeed creative, but given the poor design of the game I felt it was not exactly meaningful. Like I mean if you want a creative outlet go play Planet Coaster, Minecraft or Rimworld. Since then I have learned that there is a structural problem with the gaming press and it took a while for independent commenters on RUclips to really pick up speed and have honest opinions on these things. Having seen a couple of these HZD reviews the general consensus among those who really try is that it is indeed a very good game, just not quite a masterpiece. There are still people out there arguing that BOTW is such a masterpiece, I wish they would have the financial windfall to acquire a mirror and just look at themselves prostrating before the emperor not wearing any clothes.
Great game. The hate is unnecessary.
Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the best games I've ever played. The world building in here is on a master class level. Mass Effect trilogy has a lot of same qualities in the sense that every little detail in the lore seems to be very well thought out.
This was my first game
Good first game to have
One day the 2nd game will go on sale for a reasonable price 🙏
@@emmyturner7385 I’ve seen some solid deals but definitely wait whenevers best for ya 👌🏾
I didn't even realize this video was from a channel with 700 subscribers. Good job man, I'm subscribing.
The dlc had gone woke so no thanks , and i loved this game aloat 😢
I genuinely can't figure out what you might be referring to. Unless you're thinking of the dlc for the second game.
@dougpleppen3803 yes that on
@dougpleppen3803 yes that shet
Same-sex relationships exist. Get over it. Idk why seeing two women or men love each other bothers so you so much. It is being hateful for absolutely no reason. And calling things “woke” is so unserious.
Anyone complaining about things being "woke" can be dismissed without comment.
