    Ok, the cheap boxster will need as a minimum front and rear suspension including brakes- mine did, as well as paint on rear bumper, replacement radio unit (ok. lost the original CDR faceplate my bad), fix some leaks, all was going well until "cam deviation" arrived - dodgy cam solenoids so need replacing along with chain guides. That's realistically an engine out job so think IMS, clutch, might as well service the plugs AOS belts and anything else - total will be around £8-10k without the cost of the car. I intend the car to be as good as new so the cost isn't really the issue. Plus it's my 3rd one so I know how good it will be when done.

      Thanks for taking the time to comment, it's really appreciated. It's nice to hear that you basically agree with me! I'm OK with the "cam deviation" issue (at present!) and not had any leaks. I'm not that bothered about the cosmetics, mine has had paint, lots of paint, over its 24yrs and some of it is a bit crap, but I don't care. It's good from far but far from good. I didn't buy it for polishing, I bought it to fix all the stuff that I knew would need doing after years of differed maintenance and get it driving like it should. How much of the work do you do yourself?

    • @BlackBuck777
      @BlackBuck777 16 дней назад

      @@huwjones5879 Yeah, it's always a surprise how many owners neglect these cars, I suppose it's because the parts actually last a long time without grumbling too much. As for work, I have done a fair bit and work on my cars as much as possible. The engine work I will leave to others though, I just don't have enough time available. Best tip - research parts prices carefully!

    Thanks for the video and overview. I purchased a 2003 "S" a couple of years ago after getting a clean Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) and so far, only the left rear CV boot needs replacement (entire axle will be replaced). It was not a bargain Boxster like yours; I paid about twice what you did. A fun drive for sure. I'm curious what the condition of the IMS bearing was - 2000 was the switch-over year from double row to single row bearings; which did you have and what was its condition? Thanks again.

    • @huwjones5879
      @huwjones5879 18 дней назад

      Hi, thanks for taking the time to comment, it's really appreciated. My IMS was the double row and according to Sam Lander who did the actual replacement, it was OK but "maybe felt a little stiff" compared to others he has done. Sam also mentioned that with the early 2000's cars it really is impossible to know which IMS bearing they have until it's removed, Porsche don't really know themselves apparently. I went with the EPS IMS solution which is a roller bearing and it runs in engine oil, so I'm confident I'll not have any problems.

    We've got the 1. 5 diesel 8 speed auto coming up 2 years next month, done 30k miles with zero issues. I think Grandland X is a solid car, means it wouldn't rattle easily over the years. The 8 speed auto diesel will hit 90mph at 2.4k rpm, which is amazing, stick to 60mph and 70mpg on motorway is easily achievable, rpm sits only at 1.5k which is almost idling. Great family car and we intend to keep ours as long as possible.

      Thanks for taking the time to comment, it's appreciated. I've not driven the diesel version, as I went off Diesels after the VW scandal. I expect its the same engine as the one oil the Insignia I had, so it a very good unit, I was able to get 50mpg from the Insignia at motorway speeds.

    Great video, thank you. I have been bitten by the bug and I regularly scour Autotrader and eBay for that bargain Boxster and have certainly realised that to maintain them, as you have described, is likely to cost thousands. Would it be worth it? Probably, if you are looking to keep it as they now have classic car status, but as a money earner probably not. One thing you didn't mention was the dreaded bore scoring. Well worth getting a pre purchase inspection before buying one to check this out, otherwise your engine could be toast and a rebuild or new engine is mega bucks.

    • @huwjones5879
      @huwjones5879 Месяц назад

      Thanks for taking there time to comment, it really is appreciated. Good luck finding a decent one. Old Boxsters are cheap because: 1. People think they are the "poor mans Porsche" 2. They have usually had a succession of owners who only really drove around with the top down during the summer and didn't maintain them. 3. Because of point 2 they need all the stuff I mention in the video fixing before you can experience them like Porsche intended them to be experienced. I didn't mention Bore -Score, as far as I'm aware, it only affects the 3.4l and larger cars, I think you are pretty safe with the 2.5, 2.7 and 3.2l engines. Now I have replaced all the worn out bits, maintenance is quite inexpensive. Just the usual oil and filter changes, and inspection once a year. Easily done on the drive if you are that way inclined. VED is the biggest expense. I don't think my car will ever be worth much more than I paid for it, it might be a little easier to sell as I've done all the expensive and difficult jobs on it so any new owner won't have to contend with bolts that have seized in place after 24 yrs of differed maintenance.

    I’m not sure about the 986, but the 987 window trim that I needed to replace, is $2000 Canadian or $1400 US. I’m not quite sure how a piece of rubber attached to plastic could be so expensive and I’ve heard of explanation from anybody including Porsche.

      Thanks for taking the time to comment, its really appreciated. The window trim of your 987 is that expensive because Porsche want it to be. 987 parts appear to be much more expensive here in the the UK as well, my brother has one and even though its only 6 yrs younger than my 986 patten part availability is less and they are often much more expensive even though the cars are virtually the same. Im having to rent various cars atm having sold mine. Ive rented this a new juke a new kuga and a cx5. That was the only one with a 4cyl. It was thirstier but the night and day difference in smoothness. Currently got a corsa non turbo and boy do you near the so called characterful 3cyl thrum these testers rave about. No thanks.

If you want refinement and quietness then why are you bothering with engines, at all? Eliminate the engine altogether and go for an Electric Vehicle? My Tesla Model 3 is beautifully quiet, smooth and the driving experience far more refined than any ICE. If you want a small runabout the Renault Zoe is going to be way quieter and definitely more refined than a Corsa, and of course there is the eCorsa if you have a particular liking for Vauxhall.

    Damn, I have been searching to see how they make modern rugby balls without laces and still yet to find out how. These have a large hole which is laced up after and I could see it was difficult to turn inside out when stitched from the inside. So how do they stitch the inside of a modern ball that has no opening to turn it inside out?

      Thanks for getting in touch. Good detective work! Yes i have a CJ Autos lift and it worked very well on the R53. The lift is adjustable widthways to enable it to fit safely. It takes a bit of practice to get the balance set correctly. It doesn’t fit my Boxster 986 so if you want to make me an offer?

    Terrible build quality I had to repair a coil spring and drop links on a 68 plate and now wish bones car only has 56k on the clock and it’s not like it’s been ragged around it can’t pull off fast enough unless it’s passed 2k revs 😅 it’s lovely to drive one of the nicest cars I have drove for comfort but yeah build quality is shocking

      Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, much appreciated. I guess this is why PCP and Lease is so popular, if something breaks its under warranty, out of warranty, tough. And of course underneath these are basically Peugeots, a brand not held in high regard for build quality.

      @@huwjones5879 if you have had yours three years, about same we have had ours, sadly there was not a lot of choice at that time. We had two options for the Sri one was black one was grey, we had the grey, to at least give a bit of something of a difference with the black roof. It ‘s like you say not anything to special on the outside, but very comfy inside. We have had many Vauxhall cars over the years and in general been happy with them , my hubby is really a Mazda man but Mx5 ‘s . However he also likes this. Pity there are not more bright colours , so many about from different manufacturers, , Vauxhall have pretty much kept the same range of colours. Anyway overall it’s not a bad car hehe. Thanks for your review I enjoyed watching it.

    Hi Huw. Really interesting well presented review. I have had the 1.2 Sport Nav manual for almost 3 years. I like everything about the car apart from one thing which is that I find the clutch release to be quite jerky (mostly from 1st to 2nd) and a million miles away from the effortlessly smooth Toyota Avensis (my previous car). It took me a long time to master this. But even now I still find it takes more effort than it should (and particularly on a hill start). I need to be very exact in bringing the clutch precisely up to the biting point and actually holding it there for a good second before fully releasing. Maybe it is just that the Toyota was so smooth and maybe because I tend not to over rev. But still wish I had gone automatic. Any feedback on this would be much appreciated.

      Thanks for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate. I no longer have the Grandland so I'm unable to provide much that will be useful to you and your clutch issues, the only problem I had with the clutch was that the pedal was far too close to the brake pedal.

      Cheers Huw. I don't think the car is faulty as such. I could always test drive another one and see if it feels the same.
