Living Abroad Just Got Complicated (Especially in Colombia) Here’s Why
In this video, I discuss the growing complexities of living abroad as an American, especially amid rising political tensions between the United States and Colombia. From recent tariffs imposed by the U.S. to retaliatory measures affecting Americans abroad, I explore how these challenges impact digital nomads, expats, and travelers like me. Filmed in Pereira, Colombia, I also share my experiences navigating life in Latin America, reflecting on adaptability and the importance of finding unity despite political discord.

Can AMERICANS OWN Guns in Ecuador? How Far Can You Go to Protect Yourself and your Assets?
Просмотров 7097 часов назад
In this video, we dive deep into the recent changes to gun laws in Ecuador and explore a question on many expats' minds: Can Americans own a gun here? While violent crime in Ecuador is often linked to organized crime groups, personal safety remains a top concern for foreigners. In 2023, Ecuador took the controversial step of legalizing firearms for self-defense, but the process is far from simp...

Hidden rentals they DON'T show you in the Nicaraguan Countryside
It's not complicated, criminals entering illegally into another country is wrong. its time to choose maybe what country we want to support and want to be a citizen of. just saying. you have a choice.
It will get worse. Trump is placing tariffs on any country that refuses to give him what he wants, Canada, Mexico, the countries in the EU, all the central and south American countries. He and his party do not care about the consequences.
My fear is that there will be more drama. But i have my fingers crossed that it wont happen
I sure hope they continue to make gun ownership extremely difficult.
@@sandiemann3860 its definitely not for everyone
@ It’s that guns in the us is such a massive problem I’d really hate see that happen in Ecuador. 🇪🇨
@@sandiemann3860 i agree its a big problem in USA
These countries people are being massively deported to are going to have the GREEN-GO!!
Very possible.... especially in Mexico
Did you ask if they were waiting to sing for food? Why would a line of people be waiting to sing for food?
Yes, during this time of year during "La Purisima" there is a thing called "La Gritería" (The Shouting), a lively tradition where people gather in streets and homes to sing hymns and shout, "¿Quién causa tanta alegría?" (Who causes so much joy?), to which the response is, "¡La Concepción de María!" (The Conception of Mary!). They get food in response to the songs sung
Trump is the problem, he is a bully and a spoiled child that has never understood your life or any average American. You need to chech yourself. Gringo
Many Americans that voted for trump look negatively at American expats living abroad. This is an example of why having a second citizenship or at least residency in another country is a good plan B. Having a backup plan will be especially important for Hispanic Americans as the anti-Latino rhetoric grows in the USA.
Yea it's true good point
Wednesday I walked over the border from San Diego to Tijuana as usual. It was a beautiful day in Mexico and as I came down that sidewalk by all the vendors here came a humongous ass military helicopter so close you could feel the vibration it was vibrating your body and it was hovering low and slow back and forth over the border. The guys I was buying the tacos from there and all the vendors were taking pictures of it and yelling f Trump f Trump! They were flipping it off! One guy yelled he's going to start world war III. And I agreed with everything they said I said mucho pendejo which surprised them. Hell yes I agree Mexico is one of our main trading partners for God's sake He's such an idiot and when it was vibrating like that I thought oh my God we're getting our p**** grabbed
That sounds like a pretty intense experience. Glad they didn't grab your P****
Hey man, thanks for the take, refreshing to hear other Americans are feeling similarly. Thankfully things ended "well", or at least better than they could've. On a nother note, I'm probably going to be leaving Colombia for completely different reasons soon. I've been here for two years and just recently got my bike jacked at gunpoint in las Palmas. This comes after I got pulled up on last year while going for a run in the Belén-Laureles area, but I acted like I didn't hear/understand and made a sharp turn. Now this geopolitical tension I think is my last straw for Colombia. It has been a great experience overall, but I'm tired of feeling like I'm playing roulette constantly. Just wanted to share my viewpoint here. Saludos ✌
@Ryan-ul7dy wow, that does seem like a lot to deal with. By bike, you mean bicycle or motorcycle? (I lived in Medallo for about 1.5 years and know las palmas has pretty consistent crime with armed gangsters stealing motorcycles.) I generally dont suggest medellin anymore due to its crime and corruption (i had my moto sent into the patios on a made up sancion and had to pay 500usd to get it out) even though i absolutely love the city. I appreciate the comment because people that arent ACTIVELY living in Colombia/LATAM and EXPERIENCING the differences wouldnt know. The waitress at my restaurant today made a joke of how they (Colombia) should stop letting gringos into the country from now on. The changes, albeit insignificant, can be felt
@@livingabroadwitheric It was a bicycle, aluminium frame, mid-range (cost me like 6 million pesos). Not a huge loss, but annoying nonetheless. You're probably right above Medellin in particular being more crime-ridden - there are safer pueblos to live in. Haha I appreciate the anecdote of the waitress. Unfortunately many Colombians think this unjokingly which is sad. Thanks for the response!
@Ryan-ul7dy thats an expensive bike. Definitely a sizable loss. Are you moving to another country in LATAM or going back stateside?
@ Back to the states for now, but considering Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina as future possibilities in the continent.
Ha so you're actually blaming the ' latinoamerican president's drama's!?!? Are you stupid, 'murucan!? Go back yo your sock sick country and leave the good Comombian people alone. You DESERVE TRUMP- GTFO.
People dont realize how dangerous it really is. The health care system is below average,I had a friend and lawyer from Yale, and he passed away he was mis- diagnosed .The country is in economic turmoil, Manta is a drug hub port, and the narcos are r making over because corruption is so rapid because of the economy. Building codes are another major issue, and Manta is known for earthquakes ,people only are told one side of an expat travels. This is the second side of Manta Ecuador
@robbiemccann6056 the city definitely has its pros and cons but yea i totally agree people have to be realistic and understand boths sides especially before deciding to move there full time
@livingabroadwitheric After Covid that's when I noticed everything changing, I monitored the environment for about 5 years buisness closed it seemed like the people couldn't get their composure back,I'm sure many other places around the world took similar hits.
@@robbiemccann6056 do you currently live in Manta?
I get it Bro. I rode my motorcycle from Seattle to Panama last year, and decided to move to Panama, but had to come back home to take care of some things. I should be there right now, but obviously decided to change my plans.
Hell yea! Motorcycle trips through LATAM are beyond compare! Props to you. Did you import the bike? Ship it back to seattle?
@@livingabroadwitheric I had planned to leave it in Panama for my return, but I had it shipped back up last week. I'm having some problems getting it out of US customs because the logistics company didn't tell me that there is additional information required to ship it by air, and also a lot of additional fees to "re-import" it to the US. It's kind of a pain, because if I crossed back into the US on my bike by land it wouldn't even be an issue. But yeah, riding LATAM is awesome. I especially liked the mountains of Guatemala near Lanquin, and Semuc Champey.
@daveg695 wow thats unfortunate. I worked with a company called #ecargologstics and they ship bikes around the world from Panama city (they sent my bike to bogota) so thats definitely sad to hear of your struggle. Have you ever ridden in South America?
@@livingabroadwitheric Thanks. I'll look them up. Didn't make it to SA. I was planning on riding to Ushuaia, but decided that I wanted to settle down for a while.
@daveg695 gotchya! Tomorrows another day if you ever decide to do it
Not sure I would classify it as "drama between countries". I think it's more accurately described as idiocy from an orange menace.
Hahah
I'm in Baja and since the election I've noticed a distinct change in attitude toward gringos. I'm going to go back home because things are going to escalate.
@texasrefugee7888 right this is exactly one of my worries - how their perception and attitude of Americans in their countries will change for the worse... Mexico is particularly suseptible IMO. Other places in LATAM wont be as bad like Nicaragua though
I live in Puerto Vallarta. I’m currently fabricating a backstory that I’m from Canada. But I do expect treatment of U.S. citizens to deteriorate
@drewj4297 The other day I went into my usual big mercado and the Mexicans who usually bag groceries for me for a little tip refused. I came across the border Wednesday from San Diego to Tijuana and I was getting a taco at one of the vendors when one of Trump's humongous military helicopters came flying over low and slow back and forth over the border. As I was standing right there those vendors were yelling f Trump f Trump they were all taking pictures and flipping off the helicopter They were extremely surprised because I said yes f Trump and an older gentleman yelled he's going to start world war III. I think this is true. He likes to show off his power and military. He says he's a Christian?! Matthew 7:15 through 7:23 says you will know the wolves in sheep's clothing by the fruit they bear. Well this is the fruit He is already bearing 🤬😡🤬😡🤬😡🤬😡🤬😡🤬😡🤬😡🤬😡
Good call, Im from MN so saying that im Canadian is incredibly believable even when i say it to Americans hahha but mexicans that dont speak english would have no idea
Wow refused to bag your groceries. Disappointing but eye opening experience, right? Damn
Well, don’t worry about it because it took 11 minutes for Mr. Petro to offer his personal plane to get these people out of here. I respect everybody, but these people are not good people bye-bye
@melserrano1899 yes i was surprised at how fast he resolved the issue.
@ I just subscribed 😎🇺🇸 looking forward to see your content. Be safe out there my new friend.
@melserrano1899 thanks mel
Maybe its a good time to go back to the US, as all the criminals will be headed back south.
Thats one interesting perspective. I have a feeling the receiving countries will probably not release them all into society but who knows
Good, Mexico is starting to do the same. And quit calling yourselves "expats" you are an illegal immigrant if you are not properly vetted to stay in whatever country you are currently residing
Mexico actually rejected these planes first. Petro did after. Mexico already has to worry about the 25% tariffs going into effect soon. Colombia didn't have this worry until now
@@livingabroadwitheric Mexico had NO problem with its citizens being repatriated, they had a problem with having guatemalan deportees being sent to mexico on military planes in shackles and handcuffs, yes mexico and the previous administration along with trump instructing his henchmen to quas/kill the border bill both parties had agreed up on. There is plenty of blame to go around.
Quick piece of advice: If you want to be taken seriously as a grown man, straighten out your baseball cap. Hint for every 10% off in either direction, people think you are that much more stupid. Think about it.
Interesting but always stay respectful of their laws. The U.S. should also be respected.
I agree
Sounds like the US is going to be isolated like Russia was a few years ago
I agree it does seem very protectionist and not to mention Trump is closer to being a Sultan-Oligarch like Putin every day
May be better off there. The US has gone nuts, self destructive.
I definitely like being away from the Chaos but it made its way all the way across the Caribbean and found me hahaah
Everyone in the world will have tension with the US. You say you don’t want to get involved but as soon as you leave the US and travel to another country you are involved.
it's definitely almost impossible to escape
We call undocumented aliens, illegal aliens, and law breakers.
Yea there are many terms that describe a fairly large group of people
@livingabroadwitheric Good afternoon. It's important that we identify things as they are. No other countries would identify these aliens other than illegal unless they were legal. What's insane is that because they are in America, Americans are supposed to give illegals preference over citizens. Colombia would never be tolerant of illegal aliens, and neither should America.
Interesting. I made an additional comment that did not appear in the comments.
My comment was, why is it ok for American citizens to have to give special treatment to illegal aliens? Colombia would never tolerate illegal aliens in their country. Let alone give them financial assistance.
Why do American citizens have to come second to illegal aliens?
Abroad living or national security????
You jumped the gun, everything has been resolved no need to panic, can't wait for Petro to be out as president, a complete idiot!
I made the video before the solution came. I didn't know if it would take long or not.
It’s criminals being deported. Just be a good guest wherever you go.
@@furtrapper11 totally agree - being a good guest is vital.
I really appreciate your efforts! I need some advice: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (mistake turkey blossom warfare blade until bachelor fall squeeze today flee guitar). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
No
Left government in Colombia and conservative one in USA is a premise for confrontation!
100% both are basically extremes on each end
If the U.S. respected other countries it wouldn’t be a problem. But the U.S. arrogantly believes it has the right to dictate the government systems of other countries
Respect must be mutual! Nobody in his /her private life allows random people to get in their house and to have free food and drink! And of course, nobody likes someone to dictate his/her way of life! This is why I am saying respect must be mutual to each other!
everyone here hates Petro (not because of this incident, it's been that way for yeara). He's gone in 2026, and he's probably ruined the chances of anyone in Colombia electing a left learning government for the next decade.
#DonaldJudasTrump is a world class drama queen and national embarrassment...
The dollar is doing great right now compared to the Colombian pesos because of left leaning president Petro and right leaning president Trump. A year ago it was closer to 3,500 pesos for a $1… now it is closer to 4,500 to $1… it makes everything almost 25% cheaper… Colombia needs to elect a new more center or right wing president if they don’t want their currency to continue to fall like Venezuela. Latin America needs to stop with these far left leaders… just look at the last few years of El Salvador or Argentina if you want examples of how right wing leaders benefit their countries and currencies.
I totally appreciate the strong dollar under Trump. It is quite strong ATM but I'm not sure Trump will be able to reduce/not add to the deficit, reduce spending with his tax plans and it seems he'll have to print more money to pay for all of his current activities. Dollar devaluation is almost guaranteed even though it's pretty strong now
Well the tariffs worked for the US. Nothing against any other country but take your people back. I live in Boston and ICE has been cleaning out the criminals that our justice system will not touch. Being arrested 5 times for the same crimes and let go. Glad they are out of here.
Criminals don't deserve to live freely as a guest anywhere
@@livingabroadwitheric The ICE raids have rounded up less than 20 known criminals the rest are just undocumented individuals. Your country will be free of hard working labor soon
Good point BUT 60% Food 3:54 imports come from Mexico and Canada and immigrants not going to work in fear of ICE perfect combination for food prices to go up if China buys up that food
All by design
"Living Abroad Just Got Complicated" Absolute nonsense nothing happened. Some people will try to sensationalize anything for likes and views.
If you were in my situation where you'll be changing borders in South America continuously for the next 3 years (I'm in the middle of a 6 year LATAM motorcycle living abroad project) then you'd probably think of it differently.
A lot of countries in South America are following a leftist side trend. Absolutely doesn’t mean that they are becoming China or Venezuela, but for example when Lula was in power he implemented visa for Americans to travel to Brazil, which creates an equal treatment for both nations.
Maybe for you folks living stateside it might feel like nothing happened. But I can 150% guarantee you that for us living in Colombia, something did happen.
At the end off the day everything was sorted
Yes, true and that makes me happy about Colombia specifically. But which country is next? I got 3 more years driving through South America to worry about
All of this is so unnecessary and terrible. The drama is not created by Latin American Presidents. To put it nicely, a little tact and fairness would be nice on our part (EEUU). We have a little history there, and, it is amazing how friendly folks are given that history.
Yes, it's a drama created by both sides of course. US is definitely famous for being too aggressive, totally agree.
There’s no drama here mate. What’s happening here is that Fascist US just declared war on Colombians and on that way war against Latin America. We all know the US has always been looting, robing, meddling and exploiting us, but now is official. Hope you can figure while been there WHY we are so poor and the US has been so rich for two centuries. It won't go like that forever.
Interesting take. I'm a bit confused though - you say that "declared war" and there's "no drama"..... isn't declaring war dramatic?
@@livingabroadwitheric You can live your drama if you want, up to you. If anyone should be less dramatic about war I reckon, is you and your folks. Your people haven’t stopped doing wars against the rest of humanity since ever. But that’s not my point though. What I’m asking you to understand is to be mature and clever enough to see that the terrible situation my people all over Latin America is experiencing is directly linked to the existence of the US empire and your capacity to move freely all over while the rest of us can’t. We hardly make a living. Do you get it?
@julianmartin7502 never did i say that the situation was equal/fair for everyone. Furthermore, blaming an American that doesnt live in America for illegal wars that his government starts against the will of his people... is foolish. People live abroad for a reason
Colombia needs the US tourists. Nothing will happen. I am in Colombia now.
@edwardflorence5460 I agree that we wont be deported for no reason from Colombia but i am concerned about the future drama ill have crossing borders in the rest of south america
No one is going to stop you from going to any Latin American country, unless they want to get some money out of you at customs before letting you pass, and that would be about it. If I were you, I'd be more worried about being mugged. @@livingabroadwitheric
Yea i had some customs officials mention some lunch money when i crossed into Panama but it wasn't aggressive. I'm not too worried about getting mugged as I've been driving my moto alone around latin america now for 5 years already and have only been robbed by random police wanting bribes (mostly in mexico). I truly am just worried about VISA related complications
Don't be so sure, you guys are a great part of the economy but the Latin pride is being shaken by yours truly Donald Trump, maybe the government doesn't do anything about it but the locals will, US embassies are being burned to the ground out of spite, stay safe y'all.
The fact that Colombia needs tourists doesn't mean Petro (or the next guy in 2026) cares about that. It's an irrational reasoning to think that the Ministerio de Migración won't mess things up. Anything is possible.
I've lived, worked, and travelled abroad for twenty-four years. Four of those years were spent in Colombia; 100% legally. Why, legally? SImply because I had the resources to do so, as few people on the planet do. I lived and taught English in Manizales (quite close to Pereira), and travelled all over the country, using public transport, as a single female. I was treated with nothing but kindness, and had zero problems with safety. I've had similar experiences in the vast majority of the places which I have spent significant time in, including Mexico. It has only been in the past few years that I've seen a distinct change in the attitude towards the US, and Americans being present abroad. This correlates directly with our toxic foreign policy decisions. I was absolutely horrified by the amount of damage which the Biden administration, specifically the State Department, did to our global neighbors, and to our reputation. These attrocities are ongoing under the new administration. Despite promises, Trump has done zero to stop the bloodshed. The overwhelmingly violent, callous, militaristic turn the US has taken has destroyed our foreign realtions, and how America and Americans are perceived in general. Now, Trump's psychosis is driving home the final nail in that coffin. It is one thing to address illegal immigration; that is not what he is doing here. He is doing this as a cheap, dog-and-pony show to appease the hateful people who voted for him. His petty stunts are costing US taxpayers ridiculous amounts of money and profoundly affecting the lives of good people who were simply seeking a better future for their families. At the same time, they are further isloating the US, which we simply cannot afford at this time. Like Eric, I try my best to convince people that not all Americans are this way. That we have a genuine interest in being good neighbors, and experiencing all of the wonderfully diverse cultures on this planet. However, it is becoming more difficult by the hour. Keep your chin up, Eric. Do what you can to counter the bad, and be the good.
Wow, very thoughtful message Ann. I appreciate it. Since these things are out of our control, I suppose it's best to avoid thinking about it too much. My main frustration is the possible problems with future transit that might come out of nowhere due to extreme US policy. We can only sit on our hands and hope i guess. Manizales is beautiful I spent some time there in 2020 and have driven there a few times on my bike recently. 24 years is a long time abroad! Did you mostly teach ESL or what jobs did you do during these 2 dozen years?
You sound like a nuanced, kind, knowledgeable interesting human being. If you’re in states, I urge you to leave Fascist America before is too late. That ship is sinking as we speak, at the bottom of your hearth I know you know it. We know not all “Americans” are the same, unfortunately there’s too many of youse desiring and acting so we suffer even more. And there’s a very few “Americans” wanting to own everyone and everything, they don’t even want to be rich any more, they want the destruction of all of Us. Palestine is the proof of that.
I live outside the US (as my channel name "Living Abroad with Eric" suggests) but Im not sure about Ann
As we say here, "ya siéntese señora!" calm down, nobody besides you gringos think that people over here care enough how gringos are as a collective, if you have friends they will be still your friends. You are so full of yourselves. If you lived for a long time in any Latin American country, you would realize that news like this make an impact (besides, nothing really happened in the end) in daily life as much as any other news from abroad and then gets memory holed. People here live their lives and power on to get what they need. They might have a talk with you about it, but that's about it. At the end of the day, we are the ones, with God's help, to carry our families on to a better future. These gringos man...
As I mentioned in the video it was a Colombian aunt calling my Colombian girlfriend asking about me and my status. I hadn't thought much of it until she brought it up. I usually avoid the news due to the extremely emotional way it's presented but I feel with the change in government and this new international style of diplomacy things will continue this way and perhaps get more dramatic as time goes on

Convicted by a kangaroo court, he's doing right by his people deporting convicted criminal Colombian nationals back to Colombia. Petro would have done the same.
If that's what he's doing, then I'm not against this move at all. I'm not seeing much transparency though and it makes me wonder
@@livingabroadwitheric well then you deserve to feel that same uncertainty the people getting rounded up feel. and the reason why feel safe in Argentina, is because most italian nazis escaped to that country after the axis power were defeated, you know that saying "birds of a feather, flock together. It is humid It is pathetic dirty Moanta run by narcosI had a place right on the beach.I had to sell, and the construction is 3rd world
Yea, fair play if you didn't like it. It wasn't always this way and won't always be this way for those that like living there.
In the end, the biggest single difference is you are there LEGALLY, while the issue causing problems is them being HERE (in the US) ILLEGALLY. Venezuelans ruined Colombia, and now all of the progress Colombia made in the past years is flushed down the toilet. Colombia literally became Venezuela 2.0 in many towns and cities.
So, you live in Colombia? Whereabouts? Are these sirst-hand observations?
Yes, I'm here legally but Petro pointed out that there are probably a huge number from US here illegally as well. Soooo who knows. About Venezuela - That's an interesting take.
Venezuelans and Colombians are the same people, just and ignorant gringo would say that. Stick to your video games and porn. Wanna say something interesting? Go travel and read. Never forget that the US is stolen land, stolen at gun point by criminals and religious fanatics. The empire is falling.
That isthe concern right?...Colombia becoming Venezuala. And not the least concern - its real. He MR. P seems to be a agent of chaos. He most must like chaos. Hard to explain on a rational basis but it is what it is. He spreads fear, for all types reasons ..
@donTeo136 Do you live there? Have you even been there? Where are these theories coming from?
Wrong flag.
thanks. i changed it good on you brotha
Great candid video Eric. You're right, things got a little more complicated for all of us. At the end of the day, people like you and I don't have a lot of control over the situation. So we'll just have to cross our fingers and hop for the best. You've always got a friend in Bucamanga if you ever pass by here again. Siempre adelante, ni un paso atrás.
Thanks, man. I appreciate the support. Sounds like a good plan. Stay tuned for your Bucaramanga videos coming up. I've hired 3 editors to get me caught up with my content!
What do you think of Mediccin?
Mediccin? LOL
Medecciin? Are you asking about Medellin?
@ yes
what does colombia ship to US besides coffee????
20% of Colombia's GPD comes from exports and 27% of that goes to the US. If those tariffs went to 50% for week 2 Colombian pesos goes in the tank and inflation increases in Colombia. Thankfully, situation was resolved very quickly.
Crude Petroleum and cut flowers among other ones that are probably more significant to Colombians than to the u.s.
Fresh flowers and cocaine.
Cocaine don’t be arrogant educate yourself
More than six bilion dollars worth of petroleum annually, about two billion in coffee, and two billion in fresh flowers. We also import metals and minerals from Colombia.
It's only complicated with countries who don't kiss trumps ass. US is transforming into a rouge superpower.
it's a whole different type of diplomacy
1:15 sounds like the plan is kick out the gangs and criminals, and now Americans can come live the dream with good snoothies hot woman and lots of Cocaine... Lol
You import more than you export and since 2012 Columbia was going under financially its a national security threat.... And if you want fight against the US interest itwont be un the interest of the US to do business where the main export is poison?
The main export to the US is oil, not poison.
Coffee, oil, flowers... not poison IMO
@@theprettycity377 uh thats not true... Your GDP dont included drug market trade but, like it or not you number one export is mostly Cocaine... We have oil....

@@WarriorChildofGod they have been making that claim for years and it hasn't happened yet. It's just sensationalized click-bait. Ni lo pares bolas.
Situation already fixed that was fast but, why do we need funeral flowers, 1700tons of cocaine, and some expensive coffee used to smuggle the cocaine... Look at your GDP .... Why does Americans who are getting healthy need narcotics and other addictive substances?m?
Yes, deportees will use the presidential plane now
I'd get prepared for a non-stop Trump. He is trying desperately to become the perpetual dictator of the US, but even if he doesn't, Republicans will elect another Trump (likely worse). But unless you plan on going back to the US, you should be fine. I'm in Ecuador, and not concerned at all.
I totally get what you're saying but my main issue with his intense policies is how there could be retaliation against US citizens (changing Visa procedures and whatnot) when entering their countries. The less interruption the better for me at least
