The abyss gazes also into you: exploring the deepest oceans
Recording of a talk given by Asst. Prof. Heather Stewart, Director, Kelpie Geoscience to the Geological Society of Glasgow on 14 Nov 2024.
The deepest parts of the ocean are one of the final remaining frontiers of discovery on our planet. Much of the deep ocean is unmapped and draws in explorers, scientists, cartographers and environmentalists, keen to discover its secrets. Underwater seascapes, comparable in size and complexity to our known continents, unknown ecosystems and processes that defy study from the surface means there are many gaps in our knowledge that science is hoping to fill. Due to the challenges of research at even moderate depths, almost every expedition venturing below ...

Recording of a lecture given by Prof. Stuart Haszeldine (University of Edinburgh) on Carbon Capture and Storage to the Geological Society of Glasgow on 10/10/24. Scotland and the UK were cradles of the industrial revolution - built on low cost coal energy creating vast wealth and empire. But since the 1850s and 1930s, and certainly from the 1970s it has been clear that huge emissions of CO2 fro...

Neoproterozoic glaciation in Scotland: The Port Askaig Formation
Просмотров 2677 месяцев назад
The Garvellach Islands and Islay expose a magnificent section of the glacial Neoproterozoic Port Askaig Formation. Although part of the Dalradian it is relatively undeformed and contains an extraordinary amount of glacial features including spectacular glaciotectonic ‘rafts’ as well as a sequence at the base recording the transitional onset of glaciation at the start of the Cryogenian - which i...

A recording of a lecture given by Toni Galloway of St Andrews University to the Geological Society of Glasgow on 8 Feb 2024. Toni’s PhD research currently focuses on studying biogeochemical cycling of essential elements within Mars analogue sites. She works primarily on modern hot spring systems on Earth as analogues to Noachian Mars. This period dating from 4.1 to 3.7 billion years ago, was du...

A recording of a lecture given by Prof. Craig Storey of Portsmouth University to the Geological Society of Glasgow on 7 December 2023. Since the 1960s we have accepted the plate tectonic paradigm as being central to how our planet operates at the present day. However, there is much ongoing debate as to when plate tectonics began and how similar it was to the current observable mode. Hypotheses ...
The Dalradian Supergroup and its path through Neoproterozoic Earth history by Tony Prave
Просмотров 388Год назад
A recording of a lecture given by Tony prave to the Geological Society of Glasgow on 9 November 2023. The most enduring concept of the Dalradian Supergroup is that it formed during a prolonged phase of extensional tectonism, starting with breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia and ending with opening of the Iapetus Ocean. This evening Tony will revise and refine that concept, integrating the Dal...
