The Weed Assassin's Guide to Killing Stuff: And Other Beautification Tips
If you struggle to keep up with weeds in a native garden, this video contains a lifetime of knowledge in not only killing weeds, but in preventing them in the first place.
Many of the traditional garden practices that work to keep our wallets chained to yardwork are here debunked and replaced with science-based common sense. There is also an update on my adventure using piles of fresh green woodchips to prep a site full of old invasive groundcovers.
This reworking of an April 2023 presentation I did for West Cook Wild Ones is shorter and has fewer technical gliches.
I hope you find this to be useful and interesting. Location is northern Illinois, zone 5b. Thanks for watching!

This is the Question & Answer portion of my February 21, 2021 online presentation for West Cook Wild Ones. In this video I demonstrate the use of my favorite Dutch hoe. I also explain the importance of shallow cultivation, introduce Virginia Fringetree, and touch on the nature of nativity in our plant selections. I can only apologize for the intrusion of the neighbor’s leaf blower. He really loves that thing.

Quickly thinning out some volunteer penstemon

At least I think they are penstemon. Whatever they are, I certainly don’t need that many right there. In a few weeks I can take a few seconds to thin them out a bit more, or clear them out completely if my ID turns out to be bogus. In any case, it is remarkably quick and easy work.

Spring Cutback, Never Cleanup

Horacio Suarez reduces a huge Northwind Panicum to a pile of mulch in a minute twenty two. You can do the same thing with a cordless electric hedge trimmer, or even an old fashioned manual hedge clipper. That way it is much quieter and less polluting. None of this debris needs to be hauled off and processed, it just becomes mulch.
