Why Luigi's Mansion 3 is so Special
Luigi's Mansion 3 is such an amazing game and I have been replaying it for years. I got the itch to do so again recently and it gave me the inspiration for this video! I hope you enjoy and I hope you're able to let go of whatever you're holding on to :)

Do Sequels REALLY Hurt Sales Numbers?
There is no evidence that ToTK is “hated by millions”. Just evidence that a handful of RUclips creators hate it, who are completely disconnected from the player base.
Fair enough! It seems like a lot of people hated it from Twitter and RUclips videos but that could very well just be a small fraction of the people who bought it
23:19 He’s not the only ghost who was nice to Luigi in the whole series. Madame Clairvoya wasn’t necessarily a threat. She was helping Luigi find his brother by reading 5 items that Mario lost
True, her entire goal is essentially helping him save Mario! My point was just how extremely rare it is to have any ghost not immediately be out to get Luigi in some way. Thanks for the clarification!
I disagree with the story: Its basically summed up to,"Everyone kidnapped, go save them" and this is arguably King Boo's worst appearance as the guy did diddly squat the entire game(especially compare to his appearance in the second game).
I mean that’s every Mario based game if you boil it down to the core. It’s ten times better than every 2D Mario game storyline and Luigi’s Mansion game prior in my opinion!
@@RaysNintendoTalk I disagree. Dark Moon definitely had the better story.
@@Mymy_64 King Boo was literally just the Boolossus battle in Scarescraper with some very minor differences. Hellen Gravely’s was actually the more interesting boss battle of the two (aside from the fact that she laughs like a maniac for nearly the entire time) but she was already crazy with the giddy fangirl, that has the most insane King Boo merch collection that could possibly make her a world record holder if she wasn’t a ghost. Even though, King Boo is supposed to be the major boss of the series, 3’s boss fight wasn’t as good while 2 actually had the best version of him. I always gave Luigi’s Mansion 2 backlash for making Luigi and E. Gadd act like complete fools on who was behind the dark moon’s destruction (and the mission structure, of course) but King Boo’s boss battle in that game made him seem like the actual strongest ghost. Even the Arcade version showed him as a powerhouse and not just a Boolossus copycat.
@@PikachuLover0927 I disagree for Gravely. Her fight underwhelming at best to me. You think being the owner a hotel, she would be the most threatening out of them. But her fight's is basically the staircase boss but with a puzzle added now.
@@Mymy_64 I think it could have been better but I’m just thinking her boss battle is way better than the King Boo fight that was just a Boolossus fight. I just wished it was more unique. If they made King Boo’s boss fight similar to 2’s or Hellen Gravely’s boss battle, it would’ve made King Boo a better unique boss fight. I’m not saying her boss battle is the best just seemed better than king boo’s
Smash will be early switch 2 life because that a game that sell all generation
It’s been a long time since release but only about 3 and a half years since the DLC ended. I’ll be interested to see how they chose to schedule all their big IPs
Mario Movie is already on Netflix
True! But movies leave Netflix all the time, once that contract is up they can do whatever they want with it
I think it would be cool if this possible Nintendo streaming service could have the Dic Super Mario and Legend of Zelda series.
Agreed!
Dog the depths are meaningless, once you see the depths you've seen all of the depths
All kinds of great items and enemies to find! Also the best place to go for materials
@RaysNintendoTalk like the reused amibo items?, quantity over quality is why I was disappointed. Yes, it is a well structured videogame! But it is a lazy sequel. also the sky island are even worse
For the love of God, get to the point. You say you have this really great idea and then you just continue to say I have this really great idea for a minute without actually saying what the idea is. This video could be like five minutes long, but you dragged it out to 26 minutes because you just constantly talk.
You are tripping that is not true😭
I have to emphatically disagree with you, your crystal ball, and some of your research. Like, you already know the score with Tropical Freeze on Switch’s sales numbers, so I won’t repeat that. But also, if Donkey Kong Country Returns HD sells around the same as Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, it will probably do well in Nintendo’s eyes. Every big Nintendo channel I watch, when discussing sales figures, has said Nintendo considers 2 million a good benchmark for success. And I would only hope Nintendo are aware enough that an HD remaster released the same year of their next new console, regardless of how it performs, is being released at a major disadvantage and are not going to hold that against the franchise. But also, you don’t have the full picture. Look up Donkey Kong Freedom, it’s a game that has a lot of development history and was, in fact, a game planned for the Switch being helmed by Vicarious Visions. However, they were pulled from the project by Activision. So just like how Nintendo had Prime 4’s development get restarted, if the rumor from Zippo is still accurate, they likely moved DK to an in house studio and we weren’t meant to wait this long for a new game! Also, I just can’t help but look at how much DK is being put in the public eye lately as a positive. Funky, Diddy, and Pauline in Mario Kart, Mario vs Donkey Kong remake, DK had a big role in the movie, even moreso than Luigi, DKC Returns HD, all three Donkey Kong Land games were put on NSO within weeks of each other, and DK is getting the theme park expansion before something like Zelda, arguably their second most respected franchise? Yeah, a fair bit of this is being tied to Mario, but DK is a part of the Mario franchise, you cannot separate the two. All of this has been in the past two years, by the way, when DK had been pretty silent after Tropical Freeze, barring again, Mario game appearances where he’s more or less another face in the crowd. The one area I fully agree on, however, is that a new 3D platformer is a lot more exciting a prospect than a new 2D platformer. Not only is there a mountain of potential they could unearth with a 3D take on Donkey Kong like what Forgotten Land did for Kirby, but I’ve just really been into 3D Platformers during the Switch era after Mario Odyssey. There’s something that’s a lot more fun about having a big sandbox to run around in and just explore and find secrets around every corner. I’d still love a new 2D DK game if it can capture a similar magic to past Donkey Kong Country games, but a 3D game has so much potential that I am all for a new 3D game. Now, I know I’ve been very positive even in disagreeing, but I can’t lie and say it’s not a cautious optimism. They haven’t done a new game in over a decade at this point, so it’s easy to see where you’re coming from worrying about if we’ll get ANYTHING after so long. But one last thing for the optimistic thinking- we’ve been through just as bad a storm before, during the GameCube days. DK64 was a big sales hit, so you’d think we’d have gotten a new game on GameCube, right? But that was also when Nintendo lost RareWare, so they just had DK doing weird spin offs with bongos or climbing or Jetpack barrel racing or just being another Mario character for, would you look at that, near 11 years exactly. DK64 was November 22, 1999 and Returns was November 21, 2010. It’s not the first time DK has skipped a console generation, and I sadly can’t say it couldn’t be the last time because you just can’t predict these kinda things. But if history repeats like it did between the N64 and Wii for the Wii U to Switch 2, if the rumors of a new DK game made by Nintendo EPD are true, if all these efforts to put DK in the public eye are actually meaning something… well, I’m thinking DK’s future is looking pretty bright, brother. Better to live thinking of the possible ifs rather than the if nots, anyways. Least, that’s how I see it.
@29:28 "one big monster" in the depths? Other then frox, king gleeok, a few hinox and the bosses you rematch, what "big monster" would you be referring to?🎉
The Frox is what I was referring to!
@RaysNintendoTalk oh ok. My bad. You Linda had me a little stumped for a minute there lol. When you mentioned "big monster" I'm like, did I miss something while I was down there Lighting up seeds😂
I own Both games. They're amazing. Replaying botw, I can't quite say its obsolete. Both have strengths and weaknesses amongst each other. Land wise i feel like tears could have done a little more with the sky kingdom. Nothing but a bunch of tiny islands scattered all over the place. They could have put a civilization up there. Some kind of town or something.
After making this video I’ve been itching to replay BOTW!
People do seem to forget sequels have reused assets and when you are in a sequel, the world doesn’t change that much, and the fact Nintendo was able to change up environments and add so much is very impressive. As for the argument of it being overpriced dlc, yeah, it was meant to be dlc, but expanded, and it’s hardly overpriced when you realise how much is in it. For my 100% Botw file, I got 150 hours out of it, but my 100% TOTK, I got 300 hours, so $70 for 300 hours alone is worth it (a lot more hours than many games nowadays) and I had a blast the entire way through. People need to judge the game for what it is, and less of their expectations
Exactly what I'm tryna tell the people! Thanks for the comment :)
The Internet did what it does best with this game: it collectively manipulated itself into thinking the game is a highly flawed disappointment and is generally viewed as such, and they frame their arguments around trying to rationalize that. I've done the playthroughs, I've been introspective, and I listened to a whole lot of what people had to say. I can't bring myself to see the game as anything but a masterpiece and great sequel, and I can't see the discusson as any more than an echo chamber that grew so big through various influences.
I agree with most of what you said, and that is because MOST people do. Outside of those bandwagon haters, MOST people dont find this game inferior to BOTW functionally. I mean, there are preferences, like for example, I highly prefer BOTW's runes more, but that is a tiny nitpick. Most people would agree that TOTK is a much better game in terms of gameplay functionally and offering... but THAT was never the issue. The MAIN issue have ONLY really been two things. Two parts of the game that we all were unanimously hoping, PRAYING, and anticipating a reworked or downright fix. Those two things were the story and the dungeons. Reworks to weapon degradation as mild third, but no one really truly would mind that part. TEARS, unfortunately, failed to address these issues, HELL, they pretty much doubled down! THAT is what really pissed off the general community. It felt like a slap to the face, like, "Here's more of the same shit pile, but ooooo! It is covered in a shiny new gold paint! Yay! Now give us 70 dollars bitch.." NO ONE liked the structure of the story presented in BOTW and the dungeons even less. The only reason everyone was more silent about the matter is because at the end of the day, this is a HUGE leap in series. A FIRST step. Nintendo stumbled a little, but it was fine. The idea was novel af and hype af but it has been years since then, and the rose tinted glasses were crushed LONG ago.
I love the passion fr!! You got a point I think if the story was phenomenal and the dungeons were top tier then 99% of people would be chilling
@RaysNintendoTalk 100% and to be completely honest TOTK's story isn't THAT bad. Sure, it isn't the best, Zelda story, but with a TINY bit more motivation from Ganon it would have be absolutely servicable, no. The issue is the presentation. There was collective *siiigh* when we all found that we have to go story bit hunting.. AGAIN.. and Link is not actively involved in the main plot.. AGAIN. It is like.. Come dude... How are you gonna bring G-man back just sideline him AND Link... AGAIN!!! 😂
I love both Breath and Tears, and I hope we get more open world Zelda games as big or bigger in the future. But I hope that's not all we get. Hopefully we'll also get more traditional 3D and 2D games as well. Mario has 3D games, 3D games and RPGs and I love them all, Zelda can give us variety too.
Interesting take! I agree, 2D Zelda games should just always be in development just like Mario games.
I think botw 4k will be released for the 10th anniversary. nintendo has made 10th anniversary zelda games for skyward sword twilight princess windwaker it makes sense for them to just follow the trend they've set.
At first I thought you were crazy and then I realized that's only two years away... time is insane
We should take both the good and the bad, but I think you're giving the reasons why some of us wouldn't call it close to perfection. To me BOTW was close to perfection in the sense that it achieved its goals very well, whether different people like these goals or not (I happened to love it). Instead of either "fixing" what BOTW didn't do as well, or adding what it "lacked" (in quotes because that's relative to players' expectations), it generally doubled down on the sandbox side of BOTW for better and for worse, while building an odd identity as a sequel but standalone, doing its own lore by raising more questions without answers, using ancient lore even more vaguely than BOTW. 14:25 Agreed but it's experienced the other way around: the first moments are amazing. Then repetition sets in, and it's easy to justify that open worlds call for repetition but the creators aren't forced to bloat the scope. Hindsight is 20/20, but I hope they'll seriously consider that a bigger and bigger scope for the sake of it doesn't serve the overall experience, some players dread open worlds nowadays with content fatigue, and even those with more time and patience would accept fewer points of interest if that allowed more memorable ones. Ironically one of the first things I complained about was the lackluster sky, which should have been a massive explorable world (though I understand their design as platforms, but that doesn't change that they are boring). The Depths could have been split in smaller areas, which the different chasms would give access to with more variety. 19:54 Also agreed and I'm happy a cool mechanic helped the game's popularity. The mechanics are really great. However Ultrahand _does_ illustrate the same issue of balance and priorities. It requires dedication to make a complex temporary construction, and Autobuild only underlines that the process gets tedious, ideally a core mechanic would just be _fun to do_ no matter the outcome. If people are engaged with any other aspect during exploration, they won't stop just to make a crazy aircraft, and even with Autobuild there's functionally no reason to consume more resources if a minimal build allows to fly from point A to point B. I think that further into a playthrough, most players end up sticking to the most efficient constructions, if not just the hoverbike. And I know no one is forced to pick the boring option, but the degree to which all of this is optional makes it harder in practice for a lot of people to impose rules on themselves. I already respected my rules to not heal too much, not hoard strong weapons, not teleport often, not skip memory order... yet I hardly ever got in trouble in combat passed early game, I glided over entire areas that lacked appeal because of repetition or familiarity on the surface, and I got nice massive spoilers by finding Mineru mid-game with memories left to find. The game has so many things and options but doesn't really know how to resolve all of the possibilities it creates, beyond expecting a player to think "I did this". I think there's a better balance to strike for a proper adventure with lore, beyond a mechanically impressive sandbox. That's what EOW partially answers. And I think that while yes it falls into the same modern open-ended category, and while pure traditional fans still weren't satisfied by it, EOW shows that a little bit more structure and control over the delivery go a long way. Exploration and mechanics feel unbounded, while the main quest and story have more defined steps to progress. You can go to regions before their main quest starts and things will be one way, and when things unfold _in the current world_ things go bad and you have to solve the new issue. TOTK also does "intro / 4 dungeons / castle / 5th dungeon / finale" but for countless players it's completely broken. Some liked it, but it should be easier for other players to not mess things up. 21:15 I did a no paraglider run, more streamlined by knowing what I wanted to do, that was fresh and really fun. However it's not entirely true that the devs' mindset was to gift that to us: the 5th temple can't be accessed without the paraglider. It's just hard-coded this way for whatever dumb reason. You can access Mineru's mask, but the game just tells you the moment isn't right. Basically "you made it this far, congratulations but too bad for you". Still fun but that was another sign that they had too much on their plate to fully commit to everything. In fact a couple secondary quests like the Great Fairies have weird conditions despite not being linear in concept, meanwhile the main quest delivery that should clearly have more linearity doesn't have any...
Thank you for putting all this time into your comment! I think the reason it’s like this is because they want to make sure you have the paraglider for the final dragon fight but I didn’t know they made you get it then since I’d never gotten that far without it! Also I wasn’t the biggest fan of echoes of wisdom and I think a lot of people found it to not be an engaging experience. My video on it was fairly critical and looking back I may have been too harsh on it but still I was just so frustrated with how it turned out. I won’t rehash all of it since the video explains it well but basically I felt they were trying to act like it was the best of both worlds when it seemed to bring in the most frustrating parts of both
Don't get me wrong, I definitely put a lot of time into TotK. Beat all the shrines, got all the armor, etc. There's some very cool additions to it, and i like to just vibe in it sometimes. But I still much prefer more focused games in the series, with Twilight Princess being my favorite. And even though i haven't spent as much time in it, I thought Echoes of Wisdom was an overall more enjoyable experience that never burned me out.
To each their own :) glad they still make games like echoes of wisdom
Why does every reviewer of BOTW and TOTK seem to believe they were the first open world games? Open world existed in the 90s. It is very frustrating to see the self-worship of Zelda/Nintendo fans.
I'm sure some gamers with little experience may feel that way, but what makes you think that's a generality? BOTW was a sort of open world renaissance, it didn't have to be perfect or invent the wheel. It repackaged things that existed before combined with _some_ elements of this franchise to make something a ton of old/new players genuinely enjoyed, as opposed to other massive games that just didn't present a map / points of interest / interactions the same way. As for worship I find it odd to expect a fan of the franchise wouldn't praise it for succeeding. That didn't prevent me (and many others) from enjoying a bunch of other open worlds for their own merits.
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that BOTW changed what an open world game could be like forever
@mkjjoe I agree, it is a beautiful game, and, for a console, has some great features, but you have so many games on PC that do RPG better - IMO - Everquest, World of Warcraft, Skyrim, The Witcher, etc. I am not trying to denigrate what BOTW or TOTK are, they are eye popping in their niche, but only that I get annoyed by the reviewers acting like it was first, or the best. Are you really going to say BOTW is a better open world than Skyrim? Skyrim had more content, was bigger, had better quests, etc. And I haven't even included games like Red Dead Redemption which came after BOTW. I DO TOTALLY agree that if we are just talking about the Zeda franchise, then it is EPIC in its re-imagining. I apologize if I wasn't clear on what I was criticizing.
@@RaysNintendoTalk I agree, if you are only talking about Zelda, Consoles. Everquest, World of Warcraft, Skyrim, The Witcher, etc. were all better RPG games, IMO, than BOTW and/or TOTK. And I am not even including games that came after that were definitely not influenced by BOTW's format, like Red Dead Redemption. Add in Elden Ring, Fallout, Baldur's Gate 3 (heck, IMO, Neverwinter Nights). I am not criticizing the game, only that so many reviewers act like it is first or best in Open World RPGs.
@@bdoeden64 We may play for different aspects, I don't think about Zelda in terms of RPG for example. I know Skyrim is many people's favorite, I enjoyed it a little while and was charmed by both the world building and the jankiness, I'm just not the most receptive to it. By comparison yes, I definitely enjoyed BOTW much more. RDR2 is fantastic, different vibe though, especially with more focus on the usual Rockstar quest design. By superficial comparison of "big adventures in an open world", the only other one in the same ballpark for me was Elden Ring. Another massive one was BG3, though that's even tougher to compare. Then of course there are many smaller games worth praise but we get further and further from relevant comparisons. BOTW simply did the right thing at the right time for a Zelda fan like me _in the open world landscape of 2017._ Since then expectations have evolved, and TOTK though technically impressive disappointed me in a few ways. Talking about bigger and more content, it's a case where that's not always better. I understand what kind of review you refer to, I just think that some time after release (for both BOTW and TOTK) there's been more level-headed reviews, certainly just less click-bait. People may "fight" over TOTK being a masterpiece or trash, in truth most fans who care to discuss will openly address its strengths and weaknesses. As for reused concepts, no game invents everything from scratch but at the very least, TOTK amplified the aspects that set BOTW apart, especially with mechanics that show off these devs "doing their own thing" regardless of vague comparisons with games that also do open world.
I think echos of wisdom is becoming my favorite one and favorite game overall. Despite the UI challenges and whatnot. For me it’s echos of wisdom, link to the past, and breathe of the wild. I liked TOTK … it just didn’t hit me as hard as the others I listed
I’m glad you enjoyed it so much!! I did a review on it and I really wasn’t a fan at first but it’s grown on me a bit more over time. The echo system just didn’t hit me like it did others
I went into Tears expecting to be disappointed. All I hoped for was themed dungeons and real sages called sages. After about 4,000+ play hours I can confidently say Tears of the Kingdom is my all-time #1 favorite game! I was greatly disappointed by Breath of the Wild because I felt it stripped away too much of what had made Zelda feel like Zelda. Tears brought back the core elements that were missing and in a way made me appreciate Breath more. Although I find it so hard to go back to Breath now because it feels so restrictive and bare.😅 I learned the lesson of expectations with Breath of the Wild, and I know eit made my enjoyment of Tears of the Kingdom all the better for it. I for one love the story in Tears of the Kingdom even though the execution is messy because of the geoglyph memories. It feels very Studio Ghibli to me, and I think that was intentional. Tears of the Kingdom is as close to a true masterpiece as any video game can get... but let's all be honest that's the case with 90% of the Zelda series as a whole!
I’m glad you enjoyed it!! Expectations can really mess up how we perceive things
@TheJadeyCat I'm not a totk hater but how tf did you play a game which is one and half year old for 4000+hours. Totk/botw are my favorite games of all time but I didn't play them for even 1000+hours, I have 250hours in botw and 160hours in totk, dude you are exaggerating or you only played totk for 1 and half year straight. If you did then I highly suggest you to play more games and experience something new and don't stick to 1 game for rest of your life.
@FireRED-c8u I am not exaggerating! I literally have played it for more time than a full-time job every week since it came out. I'm retired so I can do stuff like that. I have 7 different profiles each at different stages in the game so I can replay any parts I want. And I literally just like flying around the world. I just love it so much! I basically live in the game. I'm not joking.
Even tho tears of the kingdom is better in every way than Breath of the wild it really showed that the openworld structure has limitations for story writing, natural progression and dungeon design. I hope they figure it out
This is a great comment! Story telling in a world like this is so difficult to pull off and I’m not so sure they did a great job with it either. Hopefully they can improve everything with the next game!
my dissapointment with Totk is that its 55% more of the same 5% something fresh and 40% bloat, a game that story wise hated being a sequel and a base overworld not changed enough for a good sequel to focus 70% of its "new" content on, and 2 additional layers to the world depths and sky that add basically nothing to the over all expirence outside some first time "ooohhhh whats this? oh its dissapointment" if Botw was a love letter to the fanchise while doing its own thing then Totk was hate mail pretending none of the franchise matter at all.
Strong words!!! I certainly think they were still trying to write a love letter to the fans
@@RaysNintendoTalk not when Totk goes out of its way to ignore basically any connection to Botw outside of it being the same hyrule and even further to deliberately not include anything from past games, the Sky islands were absolutely perfect for a skyward sword call back the depths could have had something, but no Totk felt like everything that could have been a call back was shaved off.
TotK ignoring BotW is an absolute myth, and it's become one of those false ideas that's been repeated so many times that people just accept it as irrefutable fact and frame the rest of their arguments around it. The game references the Calamity and numerous BotW characters several times, the stories of the most important present characters are expanded upon in cool ways that make perfect sense for them, and Hyrule in general has made so much notable progression both between games and during TotK. It doesn't spend a vast amount of time recapping BotW's events, but that's literally just to be friendly to those that haven't played it and to avoid spoilers, and thus they write the game to do this while still providing meaningful follow-ups to BotW with the world and some dialogue. This game's story wouldn't be anywhere near as good without BotW's added context.
@@speedude0164 I dont repeat "Totk ignored Botw" because someone else said it, I say it because out of the 180+hours I put into Totk from start to demon dragon I can think of less than a handful of NPC's that act like Link had met them previously or events from Botw impacted a part of Totk in a way that felt like a deliberate call back, however the remaining 95% of my playtime was spent in a world that sadly did not care that you played Botw before hand.
@@TheBitishDragon That statement was directed more at the online community in general. If the situation with people knowing Link bothers you, I highly recommend watching CaptBurgerson's video on the topic as he makes several good points on why it's like this and it might help with your issue. I'm not sure I'd say BotW's events impact TotK's too much outside of just Ganon's defeat and the growth of characters like Zelda, the Sages and a few NPCs, but it's an interesting situation given how different each individual BotW playthrough can be, and I think they do a good job accounting for that. Plus, a lot of BotW's events are recontextualized by TotK with things like Calamity Ganon and Ganondorf, Zelda and the Zonai and the Champions and the Ancient Sages (I'd go into further depth but this comment is already pretty long).
Idc what anyone says. TOTk is a fantastic game and the most fun I’ve had with a game in years. If traditional Zelda fans didn’t like this new direction for the series, maybe they shouldn’t have let SS flop on the Wii. Nintendo chose a new set of gamers with these entries, ones that have rewarded them quite well. I hope they listen with their bank account and not the “Tears” of traditional Zelda fans that couldn’t be bothered to even buy the games they claim to love 😊
Excited for the next game :)
Nintendo need to stop hd-ing and reselling games its core audience already own. if they try the remake strategy for switch 2 it will be the new wii u.
I think it’s totally fine to bring back old games and make them more accessible! Just as supplement to new games, and DK can’t seem to get a new game
@RaysNintendoTalk I don't necessarily disagree, but given that's been a key engine for game sales with the switch console I'm hoping they've more up their sleeves for the switch 2. it's a great way to extend a console's lifespans but doesn't ultimately drive console sales or motivate the core early adoptors. I'm not even convinced a BOTW or TP remaster would be enough at launch. My real hope is considering the reuse of map and core assets in TOTK that the Zelda team have been secretly working on the next mainline game for several years already and we're going to get more of a stealth drop / shorter promo cycle than the previous current gen titles.
BOTW is the most overrated game of all time, not even close.
Hot take for sure, it certainly changed the entire gaming landscape
@RaysNintendoTalk it really didn't
@@hunterherndon8573wdym, botw is a masterpiece and continues to be one. Totk is my favorite but botw is what inspired most of the Modern open world games.
I personally don't like Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. Specifically for the very reasons people seem to love it. I think the games grant you far, FAR too much freedom. I think it comes at the expense of everything that makes a Zelda Game. Meanwhile I played Skyward Sword HD and I loved every moment of it. You scoff at a puzzle having only one answer but that's exactly what I want in a puzzle. One singular correct answer. When presented with an obstacle the answer shouldn't be to bypass it entirely.
I don't know how nintendo convinced everyone that killing reskinned enemies and finding copy pasted shrines and koroks over and over was the best game ever. I have never been more bored playing a game than BOTW.
This is an interesting point of view! Having one singular rigid answer lacks creativity to me but I understand how it can seem more creative to other people if done correctly. To each their own!
@RaysNintendoTalk say there's a maze. I want the answer to the maze to be walk through the maze. The incorrect answer is smashing through the walls to the goal or catapulting yourself to the other side. You didn't solve the puzzle at that point. You completely ignored it.
@@OnePolishMoFo I like having the option to go under it or over it or through it. It is still a maze, you aren't forced to smash through it. You can still solve it the way it was intended to be
@RaysNintendoTalk and that's the problem I have with the recent games. I want rules, limitations and boundaries. I don't want the option bypass obstacles any way I want. I want the intended way to be the only way. I want to be tested. Not creative. And you might ask what's the problem with the way it is. Because the game grants you so much freedom like climbing any surface flying over vast amounts of land, ect. The developers can't possibility know or account for anything you might possibility do. So the world suffers at the expense of total freedom. I Don't think it's a coincidence that people's favorite parts of the game by and large are the beginning plateau and Eventide Island. Where you don't have anything and have to follow the rules.
You say that people were disappointed because TotK was only a sequel but I don't think it even feels like a sequel at all. It doesn't refer to BotW in any meaningful way and the stories are only superficially connected. Is the word "calamity" even used once in TotK? And the removal of things like all the sheikah tech and the shrine of awakening doesn't help with this. To me it feels more like Nintendo wanted to make BotW again and almost have us forget about that first game completely. And in doing so they just made the same exact game and then added a bunch of stuff of varying quality to it. The games feel extremely similar but yet there is no meaningful in-world connection between them. It's basically a palette swap.
This is a good point! TOTK was initially going to be DLC but they had such crazy ideas they had to make it a sequel. Which is interesting because if it would’ve stayed as DLC they would’ve had to stay within the boundaries of BOTWs story and world. I’m not sure how I feel about all the sheikah technology being gone either
I agree with the storm section. Easily my favorite part of the game
Thank you!! It was so amazing
TotK made me find a vantage point and look around to find stuff, which no other game managed to make me do since BotW. It's such a weirdly small thing, but it's so important for an open world game to get me away from the map screen and into the actual world. I'm not sute if TotK is better than BotW, but it's up there along with it. BotW does have a peaceful relaxing quality that's somewhat less apparent in TotK, but then by comparison is a bit on the "empty" side. Somewhere in-between would be perfect. I love both games though.
This is a great perspective to have! Both games make us do things no other game does and that’s special
I do not understand the hate towards ToTK. For me it's better than BG3 even. It's the best game of all time and will be my top 1 for a long time.
Hate is a strong word. I just don't particularly like any of those games. Including BG3. I can see why people like them. I just don't. For many reasons.
I love the game so much!! It’s always going to be popular to hate on the newest Zelda game
@@OnePolishMoFo oh my sweet summer child. ToTK and BG3 are the best games ever created. Pity you dont like them.
@@RaysNintendoTalk I had more fun playing BoTW coz it was my first open world game. But ToTK is objectively better. After so many games we are actually getting Ganondorf in his full glory. The zonai devices, the Depths, hells even fighting with companions I loved it. We are truly not alone in this game unlike the previous games. and the Gleeoks. Man the Gleeoks!
@@SumireSakura Not to mention the gloom hands!! All kinds of amazing new additions that made it feel so fresh
For me, BOTW was a 7/10 and TOTK was a 7.5. These Zelda’s just don’t do it for me, I have had zero desire to revisit them after completion and I just think that no one would care about them as much if they didn’t have Zelda slapped on the box!
This is a crazy hot take! To each their own!
@@jasonguy36 I don't like BoTW and ToTK as Zelda games. I find their storyline offensively weak, the characters bland, and I think the developers, writers and programmers didn't care about making decent NPCs. But, the game has replaying value if you like Minecraft. Of course, if you like Minecraft, you might prefer to play Minecraft, which is vastly superior in every way.
@@tarnw3301 yeah, you can really boil it down to they put a Zelda skin and a bland open world game if that’s simple for other people to understand, but I agree if I want to play Minecraft, then that’s what we’ll do!
@@RaysNintendoTalk it could be the hottest take ever! 🤙🏻
I think people understand that its a sequal but that it absolutely failed past the first impressions to be seen as a better game than botw. the depths and sky islands are really shallow, they do not at come close to variety of biomes and places to explore like first time u went through base game hyrule in the first game, the starting sky island is the biggest and as complex as it gets and after 5 hours in the depths you relise its the size of main map, but zero unique places like overworls hyrule, its all just dark, baren, looks too samey and reused overworld enemies/ bosses. Like imagine if hyrule in the first game was just the a single desert biome, that's what "exploring" it feels like. They even reuse the main dungeon bosses down here, even botw didnt reuse its main bosses. And all the armor rewards in the game are just dlc from the first game which have zero lore explanation. And people waited longer than the botw for this, totk is the kinda sequal we'd get back in pre 8th console generation, where sequals that reuse 60 to 80 % assets took at most a 1 to 3 years to come out. Even majora mask back then took bearly two years to come out. Too much time was spent on ultra hand and it shows when 6 years later we are still fighting bogoblins 90% of the time It doesnt help that non of the issues of the base game were fixed, infact made even worse, the story telling through memory just flat out dont work this time like in botw, which told a more disjointed set of individual memories as opposed to a proper linear story like totk memories, the constant interruption through menus, made worse if u have to fuse arrows, the copy pasted shrine template that you saw for 120 shrines, now you get a green color swap for 150 shrines, not to mention 100+ caves that all look the same, the game is both bloated and lacking in meaningful content, thats why alot of people dont resonate with this game as much as botw. The novelty of this world wore off, 6 years ago with very little new to compensate, that's why it's a disappointing sequal. If it was a fresh new world people would not be this disappointed
I think if it was a completely new world but everything else was the same people would still complain. The world wasn’t the problem it was people’s expectations for what the game would be. Yes it took a long time but just because a game takes a long time doesn’t mean it changes its identity to match the hype. The hype simply could never have been matched because it wasn’t meant to be something novel, it was meant to refine BOTW mechanics and it did so splendidly
@@RaysNintendoTalk just ask yourself where did the time go to make this game. Botw took 5 years to make the engine, the artstyle, the core physics system, majority of enemies, the world, and the character designs, dungeon and puzzle concepts, etc. Totk took 6 years reuses all those concepts while barely improving them. The dungeons really arnt that much better past presentation, mechanically they are still following the divine beasts terminal system and isolated puzzle designe approch and is horrible done because they do not account for the players tools. There armt even that many main dungeons compared to the first game despite having a map 3 times the size. There isn't that many new enemies and overall enemy count is still low considering they removed the varies gardian enemy types. All those 6 years and we have 70$ asset flip of a game that only shows its worth with the ultra hand. That's where most of the time went. Edit: I just wanna say take care of yourself and dont get too bogged down the constant negativity about the game in the comments
@@RaysNintendoTalk It didn't "refine" anything. Look up that word. It convoluted everything. Botw was refined. Totk is convoluted. More is not better. Art is unique and minimal. Entertainment is brief.
@@xsubzerox3412 Where do you think they went? You think they spent 1 year in lockdown with much slower development time, 1 year patching bugs with the new mechanics, 1 year designing the rest of the game and 3 years jacking each other off for creating Zelda Nuts and Bolts? I dunno how the development of the game went, but I'm not a professional game developer, I don't know what challenges they faced (outside of COVID and the mechanics obviously). Ultimately, what I do know is that they did what so many other devs fail to do and gave the game the time it needed to be the best it could be instead of rushing it out, taking the money and running.
The biggest indicator of this weight of expectations to me is the complaint about the game not recapturing BotW's sense of discovery. You can argue about how the Sky and Depths could've delivered on this to some extent, but for a game using the same overworld we've already explored, that was just never gonna happen. They needed to put the focus somewhere else, something I believe they did by giving interesting changes to various notable landmarks and by giving you epic new ways to traverse the world. It certainly wasn't as revolutionary as BotW, but let's not forget about how crazy it is that you can just attach any material you find in the world together to create a useful device, to the point that it had other developers scratching their heads about how this was even remotely possible. You also brought up a really good point at the end about the future of the series. People act like the open world format is getting stale just because of TotK not feeling new enough, but we have to remember that we're still in the first 3D world in this format, and TotK at its core was just an additional chapter to the Era of the Wild. The next game will take place in a different era and world, and they're gonna have much more of an opportunity to build upon the new format as a whole. As for my experience with the game, I was never really disappointed by it, but it didn't exactly turn out how I expected. I was expecting a massive, fully fleshed out sky and underground map and far-reaching lore that would spawn endless discussion and speculation. The game didn't really deliver on those expectations, but it won me over in several other ways. The Sky and Depths, while not fully fleshed out, are really fun to navigate and work really well in unison with each other and the Surface. The story was a nice and simple good vs evil battle with awesome cinematics and great defining twists. The world felt much more alive than in BotW which makes sense given how much progress the kingdom has made since the end of the Calamity, and the NPCs all play important roles in helping with the various conflicts of the kingdoms, to the point that it feels less like you against the world and more like you're just a particularily important member of a massive team fighting the battle alongside you. The game felt much more reminiscent of the classic Zeldas too with the inclusion of things like Temples, classic mechanics like Mirrors and Bomb Flowers, more fleshed out side quests, and BotW's helper characters becoming Sages (absolutely genius move). Although it wasn't what I expected, the game had a clear vision and gave me an experience that like KingK, I didn't know I wanted. I think this is a big reason Zelda games are always held in such high regard; on top of hearing out criticisms and addressing them for the next game, they focus less on pleasing the masses and more on bringing a specific vision to life in order to make something truly special, something not everyone might like, but those that do will absolutely adore.
You hit the nail on the head with this! I agree I wish they had really delivered on the sky islands and added more content up there! Zelda games are so special and I’m incredibly excited for whatever comes next
@@RaysNintendoTalk I don't necessarily think we needed more Sky Islands or even that they needed to be as big as the Great Sky Island, I just think they needed to stand out from each other more. Similarily, the Depths could've used more interesting landmarks; all those mines that give you DLC/Amiibo gear could've been made into neat mini-dungeons. Otherwise I had a great time navigating these areas, and finding all the gear was fun both because I never had half the required Amiibos and because it made me feel like a collector gathering all these ancient, legendary relics.
I just expected like three good temples and a good story. Jus that. It gave us one good temple and the lamest story of every LOZ game, and yes, I'm counting LoZ 1 in those stories.
Story definitely could’ve been better!! Dungeons were decent but I think the shrines help make up for that
Ok, you just described the Rito Village climb beautifully 👌🏾
Thank you!!! It was so special to me and I’m glad it resonated with you!
@RaysNintendoTalk yea man, the way you described it is exactly how I felt going up. The building of tension was so great. The height, the huge bounding leaps, the music, the stakes. Soooo gud.
As someone who doesn't pay attention to gaming communities (beside fortnite and multiversus) and had no idea people didn't like this game, I LOVED totk. It felt like botw, but more and just different enough. The story was incredible.
It might be a shock to hear but the popular opinion right now is that tears of the kingdom was a disappointment and a lot of people have flat out called the game a failure which is simply absurd! Might be best to keep your head in the sand and just enjoy the game
I'm a longtime Zelda fan that prefers the new direction of Zelda and went into Tears of the Kingdom with minimal expectations. I was still disappointed. I agree with you that on nearly every element of the game, point for point, Tears of the Kingdom is a huge improvement over Breath of the Wild, but I don't think it all came together nearly as well. Contrary to your assertion, it felt like Tears of the Kingdom forgot it was a sequel to Breath of the Wild, not Breath of the Wild Master Quest or Breath of the Wild Royal. It's a wonderful expansion of Breath of the Wild's toolkit and content, but it feels like it's catered to a very specific subset of Breath of the Wild's player base. The building mechanic, everything you have to grind to truly unlock its capabilities, the repetitiveness of the Depths and the Sky, this stuff is a deterrent for a lot of players. Breath of the Wild transcended its repetitiveness, it presented a cohesive sense of purpose behind everything you do. Tears of the Kingdom, in my opinion, really failed to do that. You had to provide your own purpose instead, and that's asking a lot given how much is reused from Breath of the Wild and how many players already fulfilled their own purpose in that game. I'm not talking about the reused map, but the way progression is reused. We've all collected Korok seeds to unlock more inventory, we've all completed shrines to get more hearts and stamina, we've all reached towers to obtain the map, we've all dealt with blood moons for regenerating enemies and their materials, and etc. The new mechanics are great but in the end it just gives us a different way of doing the same stuff as in Breath of the Wild, and I personally did not find that compelling enough. I think a lot of people didn't find that compelling enough. For these reasons, I feel that if Tears of the Kingdom released in 2017 sans Breath of the Wild, it wouldn't have sold as well. The game is very overwhelming without familiarity with Breath of the Wild. If you haven't watched somebody play Tears of the Kingdom as their first Zelda game, you should, a lot of people just end up going for towers and flying from shrine to shrine until they reach a temple quest. Tears of the Kingdom does not do a good job of bringing players into all of its systems.
In terms of narrative the game absolutely would have been different if it came first. I just mean gameplay wise I still believe it would’ve ended up being just as critically acclaimed if not more so if it had come out in 2017. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the game
@@RaysNintendoTalk Skyward Sword was critically acclaimed. Zelda consistently clears that bar, I have no doubts it would have especially since everything in the game would have been fresh. But I don't think it would have been the cultural phenomenon Breath of the Wild was, the first evergreen Zelda game. I did enjoy Tears of the Kingdom, but it was still disappointing. It's a great game and I'd recommend it to just about any Zelda fan. I'd have a harder time recommending it to somebody as their first Zelda.
@@coolguychecker7329 The game's use of BotW' systems was actually super refreshing to me. Over multiple playthroughs of BotW it became quite apparent how similar all the Divine Beast quests were, and I got so sick of everything surrounding the Sheikah Shrines and aesthetic pretty quickly, especially since it's pretty much all you find outside of ruins and settlements. TotK improved these significantly by making the regional quests much more varied and also giving you a much bigger variety of things to find in the world. The regional quests have incredible setpieces and Temples that feel distinct and much more like classic dungeons, even if they don't necessarily play like them. A big thought I had diving into the Hebra storm or defending Gerudo Town from Gibdos was "this is gonna be so fun to get back to on a replay, much more than BotW". I also vastly prefer the new Shrine aesthetic, which is especially refreshing after years of the same BotW aesthetic, and I don't see myself getting sick of this one any time soon. It also doesn't feel like it replaces BotW to me as it has so much merit as a sequel not nearly enough people credit, the biggest reason being the noticeable growth of the kingdom and how that affects your relationship with the world, another standout aspect for me. I did also feel quite overwhelmed at times, but I personally hold myself accountable for that. I felt the pressure to try and complete absolutely everything as I saw it, get as many materials as possible, you name it. This is likely from years of treating other games like this, but that's just not how this game is meant to be played. The content isn't always there for you to do all of it; it's there so that you have something to do no matter where you go. Maybe you were looking for something more specific that the game didn't deliver on, and that's understandable. I hope I could provide food for thought though.
I was disappointed in tears of the Kingdom for a few reasons. First there is no underwater swimming in this 'open-air-world' game second there's no fishing with the fishing rod third korok seeds.
There was no underwater swimming in breath of the wild, nor was there a fishing rod in the game. What about the korok seeds being back disappointed you?
@@RaysNintendoTalk No creativity on their part plus the final reward is nonsense. Twilight Princess did collectables best, poes bugs and maybe stamps, because it is not 900/1000 of one thing.

People who put the story before the game are the only ones who have complaints, but I'm sure that those who complain haven't even understood the story. Many criticisms are directed at the end when it is explained.
It’s genuinely a technical marvel! The game is phenomenal

totk haters are just hipsters
It’s literally always the popular thing to do to hate on new Zelda games. BOTW was probably hated least of any new Zelda games but it still had plenty of critics
@@RaysNintendoTalk As someone who has been defending BotW for the past 7 years....hell nah. BotW had like a year of people praising it after it came out, but eventually these people moved on to leave angry purists behind that kept hating on literally everything BotW did. Not even Skyward Sword received so much hate. It's kinda silly tbh, but that's the Zelda cycle for you. Even the devs have started to acknowledge this "the grass is greener on the other side" mentality of the fanbase.
@@vadoslink446 That year it was praised is what I'm referring to. No other Zelda game has come close to that long without major controversy
I think what TotK and BotW are going through with the criticism is something that has been going on in the Zelda community for almost 30 years. While A Link to the Past was the game that started what is known as the Zelda formula, it was Ocarina of Time that cemented the idea of what Zelda should be, for better or worse. To make it clear, I am not knocking on Ocarina, as it is a masterpiece of a game and is pivotal to how the industry moved forwards since, but I think ever since its release, it’s shadow has been dominating the Zelda franchise and how the community reacts to the various iterations of the franchise. People want to relive Ocarina because in a lot of people’s memories, it was a game that spoke to them. But unfortunately, that wish has made a lot of people be a bit more harsh than necessary on the various Zelda titles over the years. I’m not saying that there’s nothing to criticize in any Zelda game ever, because that is untrue and perfection is impossible. But I think expectations have been dogging the series ever since Ocarina, and I think it will take time for the more vocal critics of TotK to give it a second chance and appreciate what it does well. Every Zelda game has gone through this at some point, and it has been demonstrated that Aonuma does listen to criticism that makes sense. I remember when Twilight Princess was dogged on for not being what people thought it should be, but now there are plenty of people who look on it fondly. TotK has its own shortcomings, but I think there are things it does better than BotW, and vice versa. Thanks for your thoughts on this Ray.
Exactly these are great points! Feels like every single Zelda game has had haters and people who compare it in unfair ways to its predecessors. All expectation based critiques! Thank you for enjoying the video :)
We totally would have overlooked (and did for BotW) some of the negative aspects being it would've been a first attempt. But on a second attempt, it didn't even remotely aim to tweak some of the aspects that weren't particularly enjoyable. I'm not mad it wasn't novel again, I'm mad that it was a total copy paste of every mechanism and design...
How is it copy and paste when it improves on every single mechanic and adds way more?
Great vid man and well put 💯👍
Thank you so much!! Appreciate you!
Anyone and everyone claiming TotK is somehow a worse game than BotW is objectively wrong. TotK improves on basically everything that matters over BotW. Claiming otherwise is simply subjective nonsense.
I can’t be mad at that opinion :)
Botw is objectively better than Totk at everything.
My favorite color is a tint of Violet-red (aka pink)
Tears of the kingdom feels like a new adventure only about 1/3 of the time. The sky was not very much new content and the depths was boring once you figure out the gimmick. The story is worse than bad. Nintendo deserved the high expectations, because they worked on a game in the same engine for 6 years. We expected new content and the new content we got was lacklustre and generally lacking love. Seems like a weird way to quantify a game, but tears of the kingdom simply has no swag. It's not as affable or interesting. There's beauty in restrictions, and tears of the kingdom went all bets off to its detriment. Nintendo is one of the most profitable video game companies, and sometimes a media company funds art, but most of the time companies make products. Breath of the wild is a game as art, tears of the kingdom is a game as a product. Tears of the kingdom is boring.
TOTK was given literally endless time and money to be developed by a team who was passionate about it. To not call it art is just incredibly misguided! The sky and depths are icing on the cake, the new mechanics are what make the game so special
Yeah 1/3 of the game is appealing and the other 2/3 of the game is a complete chore.
@@RaysNintendoTalk I’m not saying it’s not art, I’m saying breath of the wild was made as a labour of love and creativity from the ground up, made primarily for the sake of the creative vision. Tears of the kingdom is the cutting room floor dlc from the last game that they’ve streeetched out into a $90, 60 hour experience, made for the sake of capitalizing on a game people were excited about, (that they already made,) and not wasting the few ideas they were still sitting on. obviously Breath of the wild is still a product, and tears of the kingdom is still a lush audiovisual journey. but they were created on different fundamentals, and tears of the kingdom’s “story” is proof that they stretched the game to make it worthwhile, at least to me. I don’t even dislike tears of the kingdom, but there’s a distinct lack of wonder and mystery, and I DON’T think that’s a product of becoming a sandbox. like I said, tears of the kingdom lacks swag, it lacks soul, and it’s still kind of borrowing it’s identity from a game that came out 6 years before.
