He only failed like 4 times in his career doing that. And its great considering he is been doing this way of chasing since 2012. It was a tried and tested trick. Basically in last overs, due to T20 and batting revolution, regardless of the format, the pressure is on the bowlers to finish the job even if they have good runs to defend. As compare to earlier in the innings were bowlera are more dominant while bowling, hence making bowlers do mistakes. And Dhoni was good in converting those mistakes into his advantage. The number of runs in 2019 SF, was always within Dhoni's range, therefore he never tried to take risk, and at the same time, Jadeja was taking risk on the other end, so it made sense for Dhoni to go to the end. All the controversy is about the result. Because India lost the match Dhoni became the villian, had Dhoni played the last 10 balls, he would have been listed as God or something.
