    Very interesting. My biggest problem is deciding if it makes sense to spend money on a better camera given the microscope I have. I am using an old Olympus CHA from 1981 with a Raspberry Pi HQ camera and a cheap no-name C-mount adapter between the binocular tube and the camera sensor. It's giving me ok results but the sharpness of the fine details is less than I'd like. I don't know if the weakest link is the camera, adapter or microscope. I tried comparing what I see through the microscope with my own eyes to the captured image and it seems slightly better when not looking through the camera but it's hard to judge. Is the next step here a new microscope or is it worth getting an SLR adapter or upgrading the objectives on what I have, or something else entirely?

    • @MicroscopySpecialist
      @MicroscopySpecialist День назад

      Good question! Let me explain: 1. You need to get a sharp and nice image in the eyepieces. This is primarily affected by the objective. Secondly, the condenser and its adjustment. There is a video on the channel about the adjustment. As for the objective, most likely you have 160 mm lenses (not infinity). You can try another 160 lens - a higher class. Plan-apochromat or plan-fluorite. If you got a good image in the eyepieces, go to step 2. 2. The field of view on the camera should be an inscribed rectangle in the circle of the eyepieces. You have a small sensor camera, which means you need an adapter 0.35..0.5x. 3. The adapter, even if it is bad, usually gives good sharpness in the center. It will be bad at the edges, but we are focusing on the center. In theory, it should be good in the center. 4. If everything is very bad - look towards another camera. 5. If the contrast is low, you may have a uniform layer of dust in the tube where the dividing prism is for the camera/eyepieces.

The image quality for live specimens is very good. Best purchase EVER! The "SNE Alpha" is about the price of a nice car... I was in Winterthur, Switzerland, three weeks ago and visited the Technorama. On the 2nd or 3rd floor, I explored the biology "i think" department, which was truly fascinating. However, I was specifically there to see the electron microscope (SEM). I asked two young gentlemen if it was possible to turn it on, and they kindly did. The specimens we examined included a fly and a leaf, and we discussed how they gold-coat objects to make them easier to scan. The gold layer enhances visibility, which was really interesting to learn. It was a great experience overall.
