Baby Shamu born 02-14-13
Просмотров 5 тыс.11 лет назад
Baby Shamu boy born on Valentine's Day 2013 at SeaWorld San Diego. Filmed on 03-03-13. After watching the film Blackfish, I think that SeaWorld should stop breeding orcas. They should use their corporate profits to build a semi-wild refuge, where the existing orcas can live out their lives in peace, with more space and freedom. And Kasatka needs to be reunited with Takara. It's just wrong to tr...

They r little cuties. I'm amazed they are so nonchalant at the noise, mum knows she's safe & cubs don't stress. They won't be that size for long. Thanks for great up close.

I just recently saw the film Blackfish. The story of Tilikum breaks my heart. And the part where Kasatka is wailing, looking for her daughter Takara was unbearable. Maybe at one point, having orcas in captivity had a useful purpose, like educating the public that these are intelligent, beautiful animals that we should respect and protect. But now, we can learn so much from the internet. Captivity serves no purpose any more. It's just cruel. SeaWorld needs to stop breeding orcas.

speaking of Kasatka wailing for Takara, that didn't happen. none of the trainers from the film worked at that park at the time. SeaWorld never brought the senior research officer in to analyse the vocals. and what the film doesn't mention is that Takara was nearly 13 when she was separated. that's an age where, in the wild, females with calves will split away from their mothers to form sub-pods. Takara had her own calf with her when she moved. and Kasatka is the mother whale in the video. the little calf with her is named Makani. we can only learn what is already known from the internet. Makani has participated in over 20 research studies, including, but not limited to: calf growth. (so scientists can estimate the age of an orca in the wild) food intake. (so it's known if the wild pods don't have enough food) weaning age and milk/fish intake ratio during the weaning (again, same point as above) mental capacities (to see just how intelligent they are) and now that Kasatka has passed away (rest in peace) studies are going on to see how Makani and the rest of the pod adjusts to losing not only a member, but a crucial mother (she sired 3 of the 10 whales, not including herself, at San Diego) and the matriarch. the way the pod reshuffles itself, as well as tensions, how family members interact, how a new matriarch is chosen and potential scuffles over that position. Makani is incredibly important here, as staff, veterinarians and scientists are studying how the pod takes care of this young whale. it has been observed that Corky 2 (53) has become a surrogate mother to Makani and Kalia, as she has with Ikaika, Keet, Orkid, Sumar, Splash, Shouka, and others I can't remember right now. various vocalisations have been studied. for example, Shouka has been noted "speaking" bottlenose dolphin. some people say, that would just be like a human speaking french, since whales are dolphins. but that's like a chimpanzee learning to speak human, or vice versa. we've also learnt that orca pods have varying vocalisations, differing from pod to pod. but the whales can quite easily learn to understand other pods. THIS can be compared to a human knowing spanish and german, as well as English. food intake, as well as growth and internal health are being constantly studied on the older whales. Corky 2, being 53, is at the very top of the average age in the wild. so she is being studied to see if internal organs and bodily functions start to shut down. Corky is already blind in one eye, and this is believed to be because of her old age, though it is unknown if that is actually the case. and if you where intrigued by blackfish, i recommend you check out "The Cove" which talks about the dolphin slaughter in Japan, as well as a quick google search on some of the following topics: Faroe Island Pilot whale hunt The Moskvarium in Russia Chimelong Orca Kingdom the Miami Seaquarium Mundo Marino Marineland Ontario Russian and Japanese orca/dolphin/porpoise captured Japanese whaling, as well as worldwide whaling. the plight of the Southern Resident orcas. if you care about these animals, all of those are worth researching.

I think many people don't like the idea of keeping wild animals captive in zoos. I kind of agree -- it would be ideal to leave wild animals alone. But sometimes zoos do a good job in rescuing animals, studying them to better help them in the wild, and perhaps helping to save them from extinction. So I have mixed feelings about keeping animals in captivity. I wish SW would stop making these animals perform shows though. They're beautiful just the way they are.

He looks so playful in the first few seconds! He has 2 sisters and a brother. Takara is Kasatka's 21 year old daughter, Nakai is her 11 year old son and Kalia is her 8 year old daughter. Kalia was with Kasatka when she gave birth :)

Oh look! A baby hybrid orca that will never help wild orcas in any way, ever! And oh look! The baby of a tortured father! But who cares about his father's atrocious living conditions, right? Because he is sooooo adorable and was bred to entertain ignorant people with money!
