More .008 strings arrived and it's finally all strung up. Sound samples were recorded at CD audio quality level and amplified to 0 dB. The shop now has an AB-Y pedal so you can hear the amp and record simultaneously. This allowed me to actually play, hear, and record something on it all at once - and film it too.

Sound samples of guitar 13 sampled at CD audio quality (before RUclips conversion - RUclips maxes out at 20Khz frequency response, vs. CD audio quality at 22.1Khz). The gear for real-time monitoring of recordings is on the way. Until then, I can't hear what I'm playing as I record, so I can't really record myself playing anything for you.

The problem with barrel tuners
Просмотров 22Месяц назад
Barrel tuners are cool, but the design has issues. It can be hard to get at the saddle lockscrews due to the bridge pickup. The saddles height adjustment is quite limited - really suitable only for compensating for fretboard radius. These issues can combine to make setting saddle height problematic - a situation both players and builders should be aware of. Guitar building tips on my old channe...

    As soon as the video started I thought the pickup was far too close to the strings. Especially with it having more magnets than other ones. On this occasion, I would have shimmed the bridge rather than the neck; maybe with a contrasting wood, or even a piece of brass, to make a feature of it. It'll be interesting to hear what this guitar sounds like.

      Shimming the bridge would require shimming the neck to change the neck break angle and restore correct action. It is much easier to move the pickup in relation to the bridge, neck, and strings, than it is to move the bridge, neck and strings as a single unit in relation to the pickup. Recently, I've considered switching from solid mount to surface mount adjustable picks. Surface mount adjustable are solid enough, and way easier to adjust. OTOH, once you know the correct height, you set it there and never change it, so you don't really need adjustable height pickups - they just make factory dial-in easier.

      @@normbarrows2 D'oh! You're absolutely right! That was a bit stupid of me. If you shimmed the bridge, the action would be way too high, unless you shimmed the neck too! I'll get me coat.

    Grounding issue or RF interference?

    • @normbarrows2
      @normbarrows2 4 дня назад

      Nope, magnetic buzz. Those quadrails are sporting THREE ceramic magnets and have more magnetic pull than any pickup I've ever seen, and I've owned over 100 guitars and have been playing for 45 years. My original attempt at about 2mm between the rails and strings when fretted at the 22nd was just too close, and I had to increase it to about 3mm. Magnetic buzz makes a buzz like a sitar. Bad grounds cause loss of volume (partial, total, or intermittent). EM interference causes background line noise and 60 cycle hum. The three actually sound pretty distinct. Magnetic buzz and partial loss of volume are somewhat rare. Some folks actually don't even believe magnetic buzz is a real thing - just cause it's so rare.

    Well, it's better than the camera mic! But compared to the mp4 upload, it loses a bit of brightness in the RUclips conversion - guess you'll still have to use your imagination a bit. Apparently, RUclips's best codec only goes up to 20Khz, which is somewhat less than CD audio quality.

    • @normbarrows2

      Not as devastating as I thought it would be. There were only a couple of rare guitars - an ESP LTD M2, and an original Jackson Roswell (without the last crop circle). Everything else was replaceable. And my average cost per guitar was only around $200. The most expensive guitar was an Ibanez multiscale 8 string at $600. The old collection was "one of each type" with a few duplicates, plus my mods and builds. But I don't really need one of each type. Don't really need a 20-string harp guitar, or 7 or 8 strings, or multiscale for drop tuning. another 12-string acoustic would be nice - that's a bit beyond my Luthiery skills. I used to have a Taylor 12 string acoustic. My most expensive guitar ever - $1800 back in the late 90's. I do miss some of the builds, but I can always recreate them.

    I own one of these in the tele shape shape and after reshaping the neck to a comfortable size and putting on a six 660/12 Rickenbacker nut and reversing the strings so its Rickenbacker type stung with the octave on the bottom, it's a great sounding guitar
