Solero and the Slip Lead - Supporting a Very Fast Pup
Solero is an 11-month-old Maremma who has spent much of his life on a tether; he has only been with me for a few days. He is desperate for my human connection but lacks the skills I would like him to have to ask for it. This will be a long and patient process with this beautiful dog as I create a new reality for him here, one in which he has control of his own body and is allowed to make choices for himself. I will teach him all sorts of wonderful ways for him to get the good stuff in his life. Stay tuned, this will be fun!

Incredible Livestock Guardian Dog Training - Watch Your Dog and Learn
Просмотров 176Месяц назад
The very best LGD trainers are students of their dogs. They are great observers as they watch their dogs and the choices the dogs make all on their own. From there, the question is "How can I make this behavior more likely in the future?" or "What environmental changes can I make to decrease the likelihood of this behavior happening again?" For many people, training means changing the dog's beh...
Juju Meets the Mini Donkeys (4)
Просмотров 143Месяц назад
Juju is given more opportunities to move around the property decisively, finding doing so more reinforcing than spending much time with the donkeys. This is the first time she has ever been near a donkey, as far as I know, so she has more to learn from them some other day, but her primary job is to manage property and she does so flawlessly on this day. Thank you, JB, for the support! Would you...
Introducing Juju to the Baby Pigs
Просмотров 140Месяц назад
Making assumptions about what a dog is capable of based on age or past experiences is something I try to avoid. With safety as my priority, such as training in a small area with the pigs targeted to the feed on the ground while using a safety line, I asked this young Maremma what she felt capable of on this day, at this minute, given the context of her situation. Juju is new to my ranch, has a ...

How to Encourage Confidence In a Young Dog

Watch young Karma as she steps up to a much bigger job than she is used to - and with a new partner at that! Karma, the white dog, is an eleven-month-old Maremma; Ernie is a mature, skillful Maremma/Anatolian cross who is part of my rescue. She learned to trust Ernie just a day ago. Systematically creating new situations in which young dogs succeed is my favorite way to open the door to dogs wi...
How To Manage a Sheep Introduction
Просмотров 1602 месяца назад
This is a video showing a careful introduction between sheep new to my ranch and an experienced pair of Maremmas. My success is due to the training done with both the sheep flock and the pair of dogs separately before I brought them together. I use training methods dogs do not fear or work to avoid, so when I go out into a field with my dogs they are eager to partner with me; this means my voic...
LGD Foster Dogs Update - September 2024

So many people are following my foster dog journey here on my ranch! I really appreciate that. I am way behind in updating what is going on because I spend most of my time with my dogs or in supporting the students in my LGD online course. This morning, as I started my chores of the day, I thought to pull out my phone and make this recording while I stood with the Anatolian boys as they ate. I ...

What should you do if an LGD pup is charging toward a cow barking like crazy?! This video will show you what I would do. I have used these training methods with overwhelming success with 300 LGDs over the last 10 years. I don't need to hurt or intimidate a dog as part of shaping them into the trustworthy LGDs that I know they can become. These boys are five-month-old siblings and are Maremma/Sa...

How to Manage Introducing New Dogs for the First Time

There is no chance for a second "first impression" so getting this part right is so important. With LGDs, they catalog what they think should be guarded and what to defend against. My little Casey dog in the video can push even a very patient dog's every button. As I have begun to foster LGDs on my ranch, my first consideration is always safety for all concerned. The previous owner of the Anato...

We have a Kusvaz and a maremma, they are both sweet, quiet nature, but definitely better in country setting with property to oversee. Most bullies are cowards at heart.

Yeti behaved just like a normal "Maremma" (= Abruzzo) of working stock. You don't train Maremmas. They are not "resource" guarding dogs but sheep guarding dogs. You place them at 40 days with sheep and everything falls into place: they are conditioned, not trained. They must never be separated from their sheep at any time. They are not supposed to be sweet and teddy bear, they are not supposed to be pets. Yeti would have been a phantastic sheep guardian.

There is more in-depth information about this in my blogs on my personal web site: www.bensonmaremmas.com. I'm on the run - I'll get you a better answer as soon as I have a few minutes. The most important thing to know is don't scold the dog. Please tell me exactly what he is doing and what the circumstance is; please reply to my web e-mail address.

@@bensonmaremmas he barks amd growls and actually lunges and bites trying to get it back. I've been putting my hands in his bowl and petting him while he eats trying to let him know its okay. I do not have a feeding time for him because he barely eats anyway.
