Gone a little wild!
Великобритания
Добавлен 8 июл 2022
Hey, my name's Gary.
During spring 22, I started hiking and wild camping, exploring Dartmoor in Devon, U.K which is home for me.
I have now started venturing further afield and have hiked, and camped at some amazing places, so take a look at my channel to see where I've been!
I take my camera along and make videos for myself, my channel and for anybody else who is interested in watching!
Enjoy.

Hiking & climbing to the summit of Giglios (the Samaria gorge mountain) Crete 2024
Просмотров 87Месяц назад
For my final adventure on the beautiful island of Crete, I hike and climb my way to the summit of Giglios, 2080m above sea level. The mountain that overlooks the popular Samaria gorge entrance! This could quite possibly be the hardest hike of the holiday. It was challenging both mentally and physically. Well, as they say, you gotta save the best till last, haven't you! What an adventure Crete h...
Europe's ultimate hike, the Samaria gorge! Crete, Greece 2024

Another day, another gorge hike. This one is the Samaria gorge, one of, if not one of the most impressive gorges in Europe, and a completely different experience from the Aradena gorge from a few days previous. The Samaria gorge is the most popular gorge to hike in Europe, seeing around 250'000 visitors a year, and I can see why, it was breathtaking! It was also fairly easy, like a walk in the ...
How NOT to hike the Aradena gorge! Crete, Greece.

So this is how NOT to hike the Aradena gorge! Although this was still an enjoyable day, it was easily the hardest hike that I endured on Crete and probably the hardest hike I have ever done. With no plans how I was going to get back up the gorge, I headed down, which was a challenge in itself, climbing over rocks, boulders, and down high metal ladders! After only an hour at the beach, I had to ...

On my first full day and first hike in Crete, I accidentally took a hike on private property! I wanted to keep this hike short and local to Rethymno town so i had time for exploring in the afternoon. Once I had hiked the mini mountain, I spent some time relaxing, exploring the streets of Rethymno old town, harbour and fortezza. I like this🙌
Excellent! Hope you find it useful 👍
@ most definitely you put time into your camping planning so what’s a little more effort to prepare your food. I’d bet the stuff in a bag you can buy is far cry from what you can create yourself 🙌
Yeah exactly, and it's much cheaper too. Win win! 😎👍
Great to see you back mate. Hope you get the pump sorted. I’ve got the tiny pump 2x. So far no issues. Is that a wild country helm compact 2?? Love mine, seen some wild camps. Tent review soon?? I’ve not been out much, life getting in the way, job change etc. Managed to get down to Karen’s community camp September on a very rainy weekend at beardown farm. Got a hike in though, to the pub & back 😂😂 Lovely spot there mate. I’ve been on swcp a few times. Hope you’re well. 😊😊👍
I've been back for months, I just don't think anyone has noticed! 😆 I got a refund for the tiny x2 pump so bought the max 3 instead. Yeah it's the helm 2, had it for around 2 years. Everybody raves about it but I don't think it's all that, it's the ground sheet that annoys me! 🤔. I do have a new tent, not even set it up yet! 🙄 I've not been out either, weather has been soo bad, hate camping in bloody rain!
@ yeah I’ve seen you’ve done quite a few videos on your foreign tours 😊 I’ve got a footprint for my helm 2. Permanently attached with mini karabiners so it all fits in the original bag. Pole & pegs separate. Looking at selling some spare stuff if you know anyone interested. Snugpak ionosphere, banshee 300, osprey atmos 65. Just a clearout really 😂
@1972andyb, good idea with the carabiner, don't know why I didn't think of that seeing as I actually done that to a naturehike tent back when I first started camping! 🙄 No I don't unfortunately, there is a camp gear selling page on Facebook, or just ebay. What's up with the atmos 65? Don't you get on with it?
Possibly the worst review I’ve ever seen. So bad it was actually hilarious, which makes you a legend.
@@VintageClips-rf7kt thanks, any comment is a good comment. When you have the ball's to make content then I'll make sure to comment on you! 👍
@@gone_a_little_wild This is a really helpful review. Don't know what the other guy was talking about, just bought one. Thanks man, keep up the good work.
@@MeChoonChannelthanks, I don't get why people feel the need to go out of their way to put others down. Especially when they just hide behind their screen with no content of their own! If I don't like something I just keep scrolling!
New subscriber here, thought us little channels should help each other out. I have a outdoor research bivi, only tried it under a tarp so far mainly to keep the wet dog off my down sleeping bag. I need to try it on its own at some point. What little tarp is that, its a great idea. Also, did you leave your boots out all night? If it had rained bother your boots and backpack would be soaked. ❤ keep exploring Sioux. 😊
Hey, thanks for the sub! I've subbed back 👍. The tarp was just a cheap one from mountain warehouse. I originally bought it to make a little ground sheet for the vestibule un one of my tents and this was what was left over! Hmm i can't remember what my plan was if it rained. The rucksack had the rain cover but I'm not sure about the boots! I remember everything was covered in frost in the morning 😂 It's definitely an awkward way to camp, I definitely prefer the more space and comfort of a tent!
@gone_a_little_wild yeah. I think I will definitely pack my bivi on each hike I go on , just incase I need to stay out for the night, but that being said, what on earth would I do with my dog! I guess in a emergency situation he would fit inside aswell especially of I didn't have a sleeping mat or sleeping bag. 😊
@susanrich6 oh yeah for an emergency it would be great. So you you use a tent and have the bivi as back up? What about a large dry sack for your boots? That could work. If your like me I don't like having muddy boots or clothes in the tent but in an emergency I guess it wouldn't matter. I'm not sure with your bivi but mine is plenty long that I have have good bit of spare room once inside with my mat and bag. Easily enough for a dog too.
Who's done this gorge? Did you climb the dreaded ladders? Or take the sissy path?
Who's hiked to the summit of mt Ida?
You weren't kidding! Hiking to the Roof of Crete. A really hard climb, but absolutely fantastic when you got to the top!!!! Waiting to see where you go next!
Glad you enjoyed it, next time, I'm doing the opposite from climbing mountains. I'm climbing gorges!
Have you been to Balos beach? What did you think? Let me know
Europe's third world (sadly). Perfect camera work BTW, (West country boy) 👍👍👍
Yes, but beautiful all the same! I am indeed, what gave it away? 😅 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! 👍
I couldn't agree with you more. What an absolutely beautiful beach and protected so will remain so! Must be top of the list for anyone planning to visit Crete after watching your video! Looking forward to the Roof of Crete and seeing you in Prague. 😊
It should be up there on everyone's list of things to do in Crete. Glad someone enjoyed watching! As usual, thanks for watching and commenting! 👍
Went to Crete some years ago but didn't know the island had so much beauty to explore! Have enjoyed watching you!
Thanks, the most beautiful places are still to come. I'm glad someone is enjoying my adventures in Crete!

Have you been to the Kourtaliotiko gorge waterfall or the Preveli beach hike? Let me know what you thought! 👍

Amazing mate. Glad to see you’re back on here 😊 I’ve been cycling twice to Mallorca, looks stunning hiking there too
Thanks, yes it was amazing! There should be a new Crete video every Friday for a few months now. Ohh Mallorca, I'll have to look into it for my next hiking adventure! Hope you're well. 👍
@@gone_a_little_wild looking forward to your vid series. Yeah doing ok thanks. Done a few local camps and Karen’s community camp at Beardown last month. Managed a 3km hike to/from the pub 😂
@@1972andyb sounds good, I haven't been camping for nearly a year now! Maybe one day soon 🤔
I so enjoyed this first video of your holiday in Crete, I am looking forward to sharing the rest of your holiday with you!!!
Glad you enjoyed, new video every Friday! 😁👍
What a spot for it 👍
Yeah it really was! 👍
What a scenery man, this looks absolutely stunning!
Thanks, it really was amazing! 😍 There will be more videos over the coming weeks! 👍
Excellent mate so do you still have to freeze these before going out camping? So essentially they are cold or still partially frozen when you're in the backcountry, you just then pop them into a pot of boiling water like a jetboil or something to heat them up? So you can put these bags directly into boiling water for a few minutes?
Yeah thats correct, freeze them until your hike and then just boil in the bag when you set up camp. Enjoy! 👍
@@gone_a_little_wild Okay great thanks! How long do you think these would last? I'm planning a couple 2-3 day hunting trips in a few weeks, and I'd much rather use something like this than those mountain house type dehydrated meals. But the last thing I'd want is for the frozen meal to become stale because it thaws out too quickly right.
@@johnnydub237 johnnydub237 they will be fine for a few days, I've done 2 days before. It doesn't matter if they thaw out but too long in normal temperature and it'll go bad. Depends how warm and what you have in your pouch as to how long they stay edible for.
@@gone_a_little_wild Great thank you for all of your information! Super stoked to try this out.
@johnnydub237 no problem, also i find a regular iron seals the pouches perfectly fine, better than the sealer did infact. Have fun! 👍
Little pooch is adorable. It was a lovely day to bump into each other and I'm glad that you all had a great day !
Isn't she just? Mental, but adorable! Yeah, it was a great day, last day of the summer then I think. Nice to meet you too. 👍
I only just found your channel.. i live in Plymouth, there is no way I would go out to Dartmoor at night ,let alone camp out there .. Rather you than me ..😊x
You don't know what you're missing up there, it's a beautiful place, even at night! Although I got to admit the house was sketchy, wouldn't camp there by myself! 👻
@@gone_a_little_wild I agree it’s definitely beautiful out there,I still couldn’t go out there at night time .. As I said rather you than me lol ...

Anyone got any idea how long these would last without giving stomach troubles doing a thru hike next month and need to take a few days worth of food
@MatthewMyers-su2td depends what you fill the pouch with. As your wet meals should be kept frozen untill your hike I would say 2 days max. That's the longest hike I have done. Any longer and I use dehydrated meals.
Good video bud, i will be giving it a go.
Thanks, it works great. I will add that the Mylar bags can be sealed with just a regular clothes iron, and it does a better job too!
Mate I really enjoyed your vids. Mournes are my happy place and sitting at home watching your great photography in the rain has cheered me up no end. Well done dude 👏👏👏👏
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed my adventure. I really enjoyed being there, your lucky to have such a fantastic place like the Mournes. Hoping to come back later this year. I do have another video from there on my channel if you haven't seen that one yet.
How many internal pockets are there? It is just the mesh pocket?
There is a decent size pocket on either side plus the mesh one for stuffing your jacket into.
Thanks Fjern customer service only says one internal mesh pocket. Two additional pockets sounds great
Nice video. I have the same mat 👍
Thanks, its a great mat. I'm very impressed!
@@gone_a_little_wild 👍
The only mat worth buying. Backed up with solid warranty.
A good mat for sure and piece of mind if something happens!
What about nemo tensor extreme?
Still the best mat on the market still i think.
Yes it's definitely at the top, i also have the big agnes rapide which i find more comfy as its a lot deeper but the R rating isn't so high.
Alot of people slate it because its noisy like a crisp packet but it doesn't bother me!
Great bit of kit, love mine it's so warm 🙂 I find it a bit solid to sleep on though but maybe I just have it inflated too much 🤔
Yeah probably so, gotta have them more on the firm side though else you can end up touching the floor.
Awesome video…… what jacket is the blue down jacket?
Thanks! that's a rab election pro. Great jacket if a bit pricey, the Fjern arktis 2 that i reviewed is a good contender and half the price if you are looking for a down jacket.
I was just gonna say it isnt snowing there yet. Im off to Dartmoor tomorrow for a nice cold one . Hope you're good 👍
Yeah thats why i thought I'd add the disclaimer at the beginning. Didn't want folks running off to dartmoor expecting snow! haven't been up there for months now what with working away. Possibly next weekend. Yeah all good thanks. 👍

@@gone_a_little_wild yea where you turned left as you came out of the car park to start the walk you would take a right and follow the trek for about 10/15 mins and you come to a wee beach. It’s perfect. I have a video on the channel from it.

Freeze the food in a pot, then move to the pouch where it can be vacuum sealed as it’s now a solid. Then return to the freezer, makes it all as small as possible.

Great video is there anywhere up at the Mourne mountains for hot tenting that you no off
What are the conditions for using a hot tent over a normal tent? I've never used one. I can only suggest at the end of Ben Crom reservoir, Lough Shannagh and hares gap. As I'm not local I don't know the area too well. Hope that helps 👍
