Fixing Directional Issues | Drill For Pitchers | Roll-In's
Nice job. I am curios, where did you learn this drill? I ask because it looks just like a drill that Mike Epstein created with Ted Williams about 40 years ago or more. We actually perform it a bit different now by placing the bat on top of the shoulder near the neck and working the bat from the neck off the shoulder in a slicing motion as you rotate into Approach to release the barrel into the hitting zone. Love the top view but I noticed it seems you are promoting a 'chicken wing' by collapsing/bending the lead elbow through extension into what we call Power-V. I'm happy to see someone not promoting the backside collapse, snap the wrist and swing up +30 degrees. Nice job on the explanation.
I don’t remember exactly where I learned the drill but I remember doing it in college. As far as the lead arm is concerned, I didn’t realize I kept my lead arm bent. The cue I have is to really emphasize the extension of the top hand/rear arm for the split grip drill. Definitely not a promoter of the chicken wing in any normal swing sense just depends on what feel I’m wanting either myself or my lessons to feel in any particular drill. Both sides play a part in extension, however most people struggle with the backside getting extended, which was the focus of this video.
@@VLOBaseball nice job. Good luck.
In the pitcher's windup as a general guide to a batter- would you mind explaining when it is too early to launch; when it is too late; and generally when it os just right (when rhe batter's front foot ends the stride; no matter how long or short the stride is).
Every hitter is different in terms of how short/long they load for. A good rule of thumb I’ve been using from my playing days is to load when the pitcher is moving towards home plate. Timing is such a delicate thing that it’s tough to give any piece of concrete advice as to when to start the load move or the swing. It depends on the pitcher’s velocity, the pitcher’s delivery time and the hitter’s load time. The best advice I can give is to make sure the load move is not rushed or out of control before the swing. Being ready at release isn’t a bad thing either. Starting early is definitely better than starting late in my opinion though!
I've tried these cues, but I've been throwing this way for a long time, and it's hard to break that habit of using the front of my foot for force. Are there any drills you recommend for this specific issue?
Try a rocking chair feel. We haven't made a video of it yet, but come set closed off with your front foot staggered in front of your back foot. Start with your weight leaning forward and set on your toes with your back heel off the ground. Exaggerate rocking your weight backwards onto your heel when you lift your leg up to start your delivery. Your back foot will look like the bottom of a rocking chair if you do it properly. It will help you set weight into the right part of your back foot before you drive if you struggle loading that way.
Is this the same as staying inside the ball or to stop casting (which to me are the same). Or is this to prevent the "arm bar," which again seems to also prevent getting outside the ball?
Yes! A connection ball can be used for both arm bar and to stay inside the ball. The connection ball placement ultimately depends on which issue the athlete struggles with. If the front arm is getting extended away from the body first (arm bar), the connection ball can be there. I would like to add that the "arm bar" isn't necessarily a bad thing unless it is extending away from the body first instead of going with the turn to the ball. If the back arm extends first, the connection ball would be placed there. Even if the athlete doesn't struggle with either of those issues mentioned, the connection ball can still be a really useful tool in any hitting routine!
Great stuff!
