Rush songs performed on piano: "Time Stand Still", "Entre Nous", "Closer to the Heart", & "Freewill"

My apologies if some of you are tired of seeing the constant Rush content, but I am unfortunately kind of running out of content at the moment. I will begin digging up some older piano pieces that you haven't heard me play yet as well as continuing my Celebration Hymnal series where I perform a verse from each hymn in the book in the order they are listed. As for this video, the Rush content is...
"3 Preludes" by George Gershwin / Performed by Matthew Walker

I am finally back at university for the second term, and as such, I have provided a well-needed digression from all of the Rush content I uploaded recently. These three short preludes are jazz pieces composed by George Gershwin, most likely known for his famous "Rhapsody in Blue". Interestingly, his set of preludes originally consisted of 24 of them! But he later trimmed the set down to 6, and ...

I know I already posted this, but I've since improved the volume of the guitar a bit, PLUS, I even tackled the solo myself and replaced the old MuseScore footage with the clip of me actually playing the solo. (Sorry for the bad camera angle. I know it's pointed directly at my crotch, but I had to stay close to my laptop with my headphones on so I could play over what I was hearing to get the ti...

It has been way too long for this video. I had this music video ready to go for ages, but I originally wanted to insert footage of skyscrapers, suburbs, and freeway traffic from the city of Waterloo where I go to university. That would've been my little way of "recreating" Rush's iconic music video of "Subdivisions" which features footage of Toronto's cityscape. But I was taking my sweet time a...

    While the pianoforte as we know it was invented by Cristofori in the early 18th century, there was a precursor from the 15th century: the _dulce melos_ , or keyed dulcimer, which used a checked hammer to hit the strings. I hope there are more historical keyboards in that collection, like a clavichord (the simplest keyboard ever), and maybe some organs. If they had a Geigenwerk replica (very unlikely) that would be superb!

    That tempo is way too fast for ragtime. You don't appreciate the syncopation at that speed.

    When I was much younger, my grandmother would play Maple Leaf Rag on our upright. It wasn't until I was much older that I realized it was the pop music of her time growing up. It's been over 70 years but I remember sitting on the bench next to her as she happily played the music, smiling and winking at me. I miss you Awma.

    the hammers on this instrument are covered in thin layers of learther which gives that nice bright an very percussive sound also the action al lot different not only is it lighter but in this type of action insterad of pushing towards a lever that makes the hammer jump and hit the string you are doing the opposite pushing the whole hammer that has a little beak at the end that pushes against the escapement and makes the hammer jump and hit the string.

    It looks like a Stein fortepiano who made instruments in the late 18th century into the 19th. His shop was later taken over by his daughter Nannette Streicher. I have a Anton Walter fortepiano which improved some of the action of Stein's fortepianos.

    It is actually the type of instrument which Mozart and Beethoven used at least in his early days. It needs a bit of tuning It is actually a piano calling it a fortepiano is commonly said by recording companies for an historic piano. I like to hear what you are playing sounds fun .It is made by Thomas Wolff

    • @ritschardt
      @ritschardt Месяц назад

      The last piano is a JB Streicher the son of Nanette Streicher.She and her husband were close friends of Beethoven who had one of her instruments of which he was very fond. Nanette Streicher was the daughter of the inventor of the vienese piano JA Stein.

    It’s an early forte piano. The type of instrument J.C. Bach, Haydn, or Mozart might have used. As far as Scott Joplin rags go, slow down! It’s not a race to the finish.

  • @johnyoung2705

    Very nice, apart from the brief reset. I loved the deliberate tempo you chose, I've always read that Joplin found ragtime to be fairly low-quality bawdy house entertainment, that the house pianists would compete to see who could race through faster with no regard for the musicality. He decided to try and compose top-quality rags - and OMG, mission accomplished! - and he added the famous note to all his sheet music that ragtime should never be played fast. He was referring specifically to the lowbrow showing off, but even now, when I hear someone playing ragtime at a moderate and respectful pace, one that gives the listener time to process the emotion in the phrases, I imagine Joplin nodding appreciately. His pieces obviously HAVE emotions, where the original barroom rags only had one emotion - beer. lol Thanks for sharing the video!

    Hi Matthew, thanks for showing off the cool-AF historical keyboards! Maple Leaf is a tune for the ages and that vintage keyboard, whatever it is, gave it a distinct flavour. I agree that it pairs well with that keyboard - it made me think of salmon with white (actually pink) zinfandel, no less. lol Looking forward to more videos!
