Yes, certainly you can be at the mercy of others’ bad driving. Traffic lights at a junction can change at any time though and the pupil should keep deciding whether they would continue or stop as they approach. I need to work even more on this with pupils than am currently as it’s becoming a more prevalent fault I’ve noticed.

@@drivingtestreadynorthampton yes I agree it's a balancing act, as I was with my daughter on Bants Lane this week and she went through the Cotswold Avenue junction on red, was too focused on the HGV learner in front. She was already flustered, as at the proceeding lights by Poppyfield Farm, she cleared them but the HGV started slowing and they changed to red, leaving her looking at the duplicate set across the junction on red so she went to brake to stop at them.

@@phil3740 These ones? ruclips.net/video/CdCkQ7fL8c4/видео.html It's difficult when you can't clear the junction promptly because of what you said, or vehicles opposite 'amber gambling' then it doesn't leave long until people either side get a green light and you have to hope they will give you enough time to clear, because of course you are past the stop line and need to clear if safe. Halfords junction on St. James road is particularly bad for that, but from what I've seen, they don't make you do that one on the test

From a learner's eyes, they are so far ahead, I can understand the idea they're a seperate set of lights, as there is a crossing point for pedestrians at them. Now just need the white lines repainting coming off Harlestone Road roundabout, heading towards Kings Heath to reinforce lane discipline. I hope you're my daughter's instructor when she starts soon, as was so difficult to find availability. Starting with ALPS.

Good question. Speed limits in car parks are only advisory as they are on private land (not on public road). 8-10mph is fine at some points. Depends on hazards, restricted vision and space to manoeuvre. So here for example 15+ would likely be serious, but not if car park were empty, as there’d be nothing to worry about. So select a reasonable speed depending on what’s around

Yes, or less. 60mph would only be appropriate on a wide, straight, well-maintained road with very few hazards and little traffic.

If we are turning right on a right turn only lane, do we indicate? If yes who would that benefit?

You can't usually go wrong with a signal. It would benefit any pedestrians that may be waiting to cross, or at a roundabout, vehicles opposite that maybe can't tell you are in a right turn only lane. However, I think it would be less likely to be necessary to indicate when: - Multiple lanes turn right and you are in the extreme right hand lane, or - The right turn lane is separated from other lanes by a traffic island. Even in these two instances though, if I see pedestrians waiting to cross further round the corner I would pop a signal on.

Thanks. This one was 8am on a weekday and I think the car in shot at 8:33 may have been a test too, so I'd say this one. There would be less routes used at this time to avoid the school traffic

Depends on a few things such as traffic, bends, potholes, bad weather, narrow road etc. If you have some or all of these then even 40 may be too quick, let alone 50 or 60. You have to assess all of these things and make reasonable progress without being reckless.

Great question. The highway code states: "Unless otherwise indicated, you should not drive in a bus lane during its period of operation. You may enter a bus lane to stop, to load or unload where this is not prohibited." So no mention of using it to turn left. It also states: (When turning), "give way to any vehicles using a bus lane, cycle lane, cycle track or tramway from either direction, including when they are passing slow moving or stationary vehicles on either side." Which suggests using the right-hand lane to turn left, which is what I would do, if safe, after checking mirrors more than once. If not safe, like you say, you can just continue ahead without fault. Extremely unlikely they would ask you to turn left there during the times of operation I would think.

What are the operation times for this bus lane specifically? My test is at 9am on Wednesday.

For this one it's 7:30-9:30am. During those times you cannot drive in it. Because the 9:30am is around the time of your test it's unlikely they'll take you there around that time, but if they do, you can ask for the time at that moment and they'll tell you.

Would be blocking the roundabout if we queued up in the lane to go ahead. Traffic from the right just got a green light, we would then be in their way, which would likely be serious. Taking the empty lane to turn right was the best option, was done safely, without compromising lane discipline, so can't be a fault. Very smart from the learner

Yes, before driving off you are asked a 'tell me' question. During the drive you are asked a 'show me' question.
