Love the video, here for suggestions and advice in the comments section. Coming up on my AAS in Graphic Tech and AutoCAD certification in Spring 2025. Fortunately for me, I have several years of machine operation under my belt from early in life, mostly in sheet metal, steel fabrication and food manufacturing. Unfortunately, in suffered from a moderate(not completely hindering) injury from my last decent food manufacturing company, which left me with an L5 S2 1/8” subluxation in the discs and a light weight lifting capacity of 35 lbs(up from 25 after my first year of acquiring the injury) with no consistent bending, stooping/twisting. I have grown a fond passion for CAD drafting, almost acing my AutoCAD 1&2 finals, and doing well with the other design courses whilst greatly looking forward to taking the 3D technology course again after having to make the tough decision of withdrawing from it last Fall. However, between the growth of other design software, like Solidworks, the down talk from folks around my age in the fabrication business about how AutoCAD is becoming more outdated compared to the others, and also talks about many opportunities/contracts being outsourced, I feel a growing concern that I am unclear about how to go about a career choice in a timely manner. I have a major interest in tool shop/mechanic/CNC Technician and Civil 3D fields, but am uncertain of what my limits would be. Central Illinois is limited on light manufacturing, whilst most of the light manufacturing and CAD drafting positions are located farther up by Chicago, many farther like Peoria. I was late on applying for the scholarship for taking the tool shop/mechanic courses for this summer, so I have to wait. Also, my funding is limited because of my situation, and many of the positions I see online nowadays while job searching require either a BS, 3+ years operating specific types of CNC machinery or the ability to work heavy duty(mostly are the mechanic and technician jobs). Most of my history includes brake press machinery, plus very few of the positions I see available only require either experience in a manufacturing environment, basic AutoCAD education or basic experience in the field. I guess at this point in life my question would be how should I go about this lump in my throat that I feel when I have bad luck with interviews? I try to assert my self intellectually in my interviews through my education and experience, but I feel I am in the wrong location or looking in the wrong areas in the fields of drafting. I had started a portfolio last year with several types of blueprints, a door hinge, some common visibility state objects, architectural objects, and some more complicated prints to reference and attempt later, but I feel I am not doing enough yet trying everything I can. I don’t have the experience or education to begin independent drafting(which I’ve seen a few videos on solo drafters who make good $), and I don’t have the finances/time to take other courses on more popular software, machine skills, etc.(but would absolutely love to!) Does anyone have any suggestions on a possible route to take to sell my skills correctly, but not to the point of physical injury?

I suggest you reach out to all consultants in your area even if they did not post a job. Always have examples of your work when your submit your resume (even projects you did in school). I'm a structural technician in Canada, and these days if you know how to use Revit you will have an advantage in getting a job.
