I've been waiting for this topic hahahah coz I used to feel the same way as Zoe. Padahal not a single poly person has hurt me personally. I used to think that they're just not loyal, indecisive, flaky, unreliable. My thoughts and feelings about them was because I've seen so much drama, breakups and worst of all friendship breakups would happen because of them. So on Bumble the moment I see anyone who says they're poly, I would swipe left immediately, until..... late last year I felt tired of being used emotionally and physically coz I kept on getting involved with lesbians who were not over their exes. So I went on Bumble with the intention of hooking up without feelings and started to swipe right on poly women as well. I ended up meeting a woman who was bicurious and poly, we became friends since last October then in March this year she suggested we start seeing each other casually. We ended up catching feelings for each other and now I'm in a fulfilling and happy relationship with her. She has her primary partner and they have great, clear communication. I learned a lot from them about creating clear boundaries, communicating our expectations and how to deal with jealousy. I used to be an extremely jealous and insecure partner to my exes in the past but I've grown a lot as a person from this relationship. Although for now I still can't think about dating other women at the same time, it still feels a bit foreign to me

Perhaps the difference is merely "display". The yin-yin venus venus relationship is characterized by nesting; for safety perhaps. They have nice yards. The yang-yang mars mars relationship is characterized by hitting and quitting; for safety perhaps(males are dangerous). So many gay bars as opposed to lesbian bars closing since there are fewer repeat customers.

Fascinating discussion, very enjoyable! Until recently, I couldn't get my head around how polyamoury could be anything but cheating. But then I came across the concept of being an extreme monogomist. Personally, when I am in love I literally don't find anyone else in the world sexually attractive. So I always struggled with the idea of 'in a relationship, people will always fancy other people, just accept it'. Because the fact is in my case, if I start to fancy other people, I AM cheating on my partner, because my heart is no longer being faithful to them. Realising that there is a wide spectrum within monogomy itself, has helped me to conceptialise polyamoury and stop being judgey about it!

The conversation in the beginning about wanting to live in a world without men reminded me of a novel I studied in uni (I think it was a writing elective, Dystopian and Utopian literature) called Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman! agreed! I wanted to learn and explore my sexuality more during uni but the queer spaces on campus were dominated by white people that I found really hard to relate to. I rmb there was one south asian woman volunteering for an LGBT event and she had to beg the organizer to not post her face online because she is not out to her family and they will disowned her yet the white queers just didn't quite understand the severity of it, brushing it off saying "We need to out and proud and not hide" 🤦‍♀️ White queers totally disregard intersectionality and only see hardships through their lens, and sadly they also colonize most of the queer spaces

Outside of music, Everything Everywhere All At Once is my favorite and gave Stephanie Hsu the spotlight (and an Oscar nomination, popular opinion that she was robbed) as a sapphic Asian American actor. Alice Wu makes sapphic movies that center Asian American women. The show Sort Of is focused on a Pakistani Canadian transfem nb person (and show creator) who dates women and men in the show, including other sapphic POC in romantic and platonic roles. (The Marvel show Runaways also had a sapphic Asian American girl as one of the leads, but I don't think the actor is sapphic as far as we know.) Model Jenny Shimizu famously dated Angelina Jolie, Margaret Cho is a comedy icon, Lilly Singh and Ingrid Nilsen are pretty legitimately famous as sapphic Asian American RUclipsrs. I'm glad to see some other recs in the comments!

Others have already commented on sapphic celebrities so celebrities aside, there are definitely a lot of sapphic content creators out there that are not white, but they're also a minority within a minority. Some of my favourites are Sarah Yak (Asian), Jess Vincent & Danielle Mateo (both are partially hispanic), Remi Alfallah (Arabic), Lara Ghraoui (Arabic), and there's also a bunch of Asian sapphic couple accounts from South Korea, Japan, etc., like 풀포유fool4you4.

I think they just float to the top of the algorithm because they're more palatable to the general public. Unfortunately our social media spaces still follow the cultural, gender, class and racial rules of capitalism. That's why I wonder if maybe we're shooting ourselves in the foot by searching for content instead of real community. The white sapphics can make content that ppl will obsess over because they have their LA parties and invite lists that they make all this content for and about. For everyone else, I find good content from POC Sapphics here and there but they are like little islands of heaven, they're not connected to each other and they don't really talk to each other or make a community. And I really wish we would because if we did it would be so much easier for new gen sapphics to have the space to experiment and show up exactly the way the want to. To show all that cultural depth that we have! ALSO Butch invisibility is the soapbox I will take everywhere. We don't even see them in media, not even diverse body types for women. I'm so tired of lesbian media still being limited by the male gaze. Its like they think if its two women in love then both women have to be "womanly" or whatever culture has decided is womanly like... 😪

Rina Sawayama is a little more recent than Hayley Kiyoko, right? And Mitski would be the biggest, half Asian, but she doesn't label her sexuality, just says things about gender not making a difference. Thao & The Get Down Stay Down is pretty cool, not as "pop" though. (Margaret Cho has also done music! and definitely a sapphic celeb.) But definitely it's harder for the sapphic Asians to make it big, and "big" isn't usually Chappell Roan or Billie Eilish big. (There are more Black sapphic musicians making hits right now I think, but a lot of them are bi and have a lot of people ignoring that they're bi, like Cardi B, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Doechii, Tinashe, Ice Spice, Sza, etc. But Janelle Monae is prob the biggest who won't let you forget it.) It also gets confusing sometimes with multiracial sapphic people like Halsey and Aubrey Plaza, who easily pass as white. And so many great musicians who just don't get the attention! (My favorite sapphic Asian American musician is probably Doris Muramatsu from Girlyman and the garden verge but she hasn't made new music in like a decade unfortunately.)

Love the podcast, and thanks for sharing about such an important topic :) I think racism is a really large issue in terms of the queer people that receive more widespread acclaim, I think the way global conversation and news for English speakers is largely centred around cuontries like the USA means that a lack of representation within that market filters into the global english-speaking lack of variation in takes. I'm black british. Queer POC exist in countries like the US and UK of course, but the multiple levels of discrimination (for being queer, being POC, and their interaction effects), and lack of access to opportunities within these countries for such groups may limit the number of diverse voices that we get the chance to hear. Moreover, the percentage of the popoulation made up by out POC in these regions are relatively small. Additionally xenopohbia and biases against unfamiliar accents can also limit the content that people are willing to meaningfully engae with...which I think is a massive shame.

I'm latina. I only follow 2 lesbian podcasts on RUclips. Your podcast, and 2 black lesbians from Chicago (they complain about low support sometimes, their channel is aimed at a stud audience). I used to watch 2 latinas podcast but they stopped, I think due to low viewership? TBH, I feel like lesbians aren't great at supporting other lesbians at times. One thing I have noticed about white Americans is that they are very engaged and supportive fans (podcasts, movies, music, influencers, politicians etc). I'm a lesbian, but I would never open a lesbian bar, this audience just doesn't support. Also, the lesbian audience is already too small (4% of the population is LGBT and 50% of this is female). As for podcasts, just my feeling, lesbians that watch podcasts are also few?? This may be why successful lesbian podcasters may have content that appeals to a wider audience and also dress more femme (sponsors and advertisers also may prefer this in the U.S.). You should try talking more about dating. I LOVE your dating analysis ("just breakup" lol). But seriously, I've noticed that people like this content on RUclips.
