4:00 there’s a simple reason, I think that chickens are the bird species we chose to domesticate: egg production. Reliable egg production. Even domesticated ducks and geese, which I have some of, are not reliable egg layers, and they will freaking drop their eggs anywhere they’re at. They’re not as good at going to nest box and dropping their egg. So you gotta keep an eye on them to be able to find their eggs, and generally they’re all dirtied up and shittied it up with muck. On the other hand, while some chickens like to sneak around and make their nests in secret places, they’re pretty reliable about going in a depositing their egg in a nice clean nest box. And they lay a lot of eggs so you can count on that protein on a regular basis . Humans figured that out right away and that’s why we have so many good chicken breeds that lay reliably and are also good meat birds.

Polly should have shown a little more humility and respect as the new comer. The cheek! I love how successful hierachies always use the least amount of true aggression to achieve compliance. Warnings like growls, dirty looks, posturing instead of immediately jumping to fighting. Even a dominant amimal has to be careful. There is always a risk of getting hurt in a real fight. Also if a dominant animal is too much of a bully they risk subordinates having a mutany.

Guys, I'm only half way through this, but I have a huge problem with your cow intelligence test. You are talking about Pavlov, but it sounds like you want to teach the cows to ring the bell? This is an operant conditioning task, but you are telling us that you are using Pavlov's theories to set up your conditions. Your cows will definitely learn somethin, but probably not what you want them to learn. Okay, I know that these two aren't going to read my comment on a tem year old video, but I really am shocked that they don't seem to understand the difference between classical and operant conditioning. Or put another way, the difference between Pavlov and Skinner. Anyone watching this video who wants to pass their introductory psychology class should - must not - listen to any of what they say about Pavlov!

Vegetarians should include eggs if they want to remain healthy. vagans, after 10 years, look like they are on deaths door, so eat eggs because there is no ethical dilemma. eggs have fats, high quality animals protein vs the low quality plant protein, you are an animal so you better get eggs in your diet, a hen is going to lay eggs regardless if they are fertilizedor not, why let it go to waste.
Roosters are a mixed bag. You can have one that loves you or either one that sees you as an enemy. I cull the ones that are aggressive, and I keep the one that sees me as a friend. Here is the kicker. One in ten roosters will see you as a friend. However, if you are brutal to a rooster, he will fear you and never attack you, but that is cruel, so mean roosters are for the oven. That in itself is cruel but it is what it is.
