Cycling the Americas #-7 Guatemala: Tikal, Lake Atitlán
After starting my trip in Canada in July, I entered Guatemala in February. Chris and Dea had family visiting so we went our separate ways. I visited Tikal before heading towards the mountains and making my way to Lake Atitlán.

Cycling the Americas #6 - (Mostly) Rural Mexico
Просмотров 5263 года назад
In July 2018 I flew to Vancouver to start a bike trip of the Americas. This is the 6th video, where we cross from Baja to the mainland of Mexico and cycle south to Guatemala. Our group went off at different paces, but I stayed with Chris and Dea to take the smaller roads. We sometimes wild camped, and sometimes the friendly locals allowed us to camp in their gardens, outside their restaurants o...
Cycling the Americas #5 The Baja Peninsula - Mexico

In July 2018 I flew to Vancouver to start a bike trip of the Americas. This is the 5th video, where Tom and I cross into Mexico to cycle down the Baja California Peninsula. We meet plenty of other cyclists, also heading south as winter arrives in the US. Scorpions, collapsed roads, tacos, and trying to deal with a dodgy wheel. But this was one of my favourite sections on the trip. Beautiful sce...

Japan Bike Trip #2 - Southern Hokkaido and Tohoku (Re-upload With Audio)

(I'm uploading this video for again with a new song because the audio was removed from the first one.) I return to continue my Japan bike trip. The weather is turning colder and while the Autumn leaves are amazing, I have to camp in below 0°C temperatures for the first time in my life. In summer 2017, I finished my job and set off to cycle Japan from north to south. Cape Soya to Cape Sata. This...

Part 4 of my Japan bike trip! Tottori, the San'in coast, and Kyushu. I leave Tottori with not a lot of time left to reach Cape Sata, the southernmost point of mainland Japan. After cycling through Tottori, Shimane and Yamaguchi, I take the Kanmon Tunnel to Kyushu. I then cycle to Cape Sata, and take a ferry to Okinawa at the end of my trip. Why You Should Cycle Around Hokkaido - Japan Bike Trip #1
Просмотров 24 тыс.6 лет назад
I take a ferry to Hokkaido and spend three weeks cycling around it. I visit national parks, search for bears, climb mountains, and enjoy the beautiful scenery (when I'm not stuck in clouds). This is the first video from my Japan bike trip. In summer 2017, I finished my job and set off to cycle Japan from north to south. Cape Soya to Cape Sata. Although I've travelled to many places in Japan, th...
Si.
You didn’t worry about bears?
Not really, especially when I was cycling on roads. I was a little worried at times when I was cycling along tracks through forests with very few people around. Attacks are very rare though.
Are you still travelling? Did you make it to Argentina?
I made it to Panama, then decided to stop there. (Covid would have stopped me getting to Argentina anyway, but maybe someday in the future!) I'm now living in Japan again, and hoping to finally get my last few videos made sometime soon. 😅
When you went climbing in Rishiri, did you just leave the bike at the camp? Was it safe?
I cycled from the Yuni campsite up to the foot of the mountain (arriving at Hokuroku parking) and parked my bike there. I'm sure it happens, but I've never had anything stolen in the 6 years that I've been living/travelling here. That includes usually only locking my bike to its own wheel (so it would be easy to lift if anyone wanted to steal it).
Wonderful! I hope to ride this someday soon. By chance, did you follow the route on GPS or is the way fairly obvious?
I just followed the coastal road for most of Hokkaido. It's pretty obvious because there aren't many roads up there.
As long as you don't run into a bear or a bear doesn't run into you, you'll be okay :P
Nice vid! I'm going in early July for 3 weeks. Out of curiosity, do you recommend I bring a stove? Or is it manageable without? I'll have an ultralight bikepacking setup.
I prefer having a stove but it's definitely doable without, especially in summer.
Hello! Me from Israel, watched youre amazing trip. Thank you for that!
I did a Hokkaido trip in 2019 and alot of these roads I recognize and are bringing a tear to my eye. I need to go back! Thank you for posting
Love the videos! Thanks.
Im doing this trip next week on Thursday for charity can't wait
That's great. Enjoy!
Hi there great trip can you tell me how long it took you to cycle From tottori to fukuoka cheers lou
It took me 6 days. If you like the link in the description you should be able to see my map. You can also see approximately where I stayed each day (you may have to toggle on the "Japan places" option when you open the link).
thank you for a very useful video! 👍
Hi! I have a question about your biking tour in Japan. The maximum stay for a visa is 90 days, how did you cycle July through December?
I was living in Japan until July, switched to a tourist visa, but then visited home for 6 weeks from August until October. So I came back on another 90 day visa. It is also possible to extend the tourist visa for an extra 90 days if you do want to stay up to ~6 months. (Depending on your nationality)
Phew! That is a lot of tough climbing!
Hey I remember your Hokkaido videos - I actually ended up doing a tour there (I live in Kyoto actually). Curious if you're mid trip right now - I'm fantasizing a semi world bike tour in the not too distant future
That's great! Hokkaido is amazing for a bike trip. The trip from this video was actually in 2019. I'm not travelling right now, but I'm also thinking about another trip this year, maybe just a month or so. I hope to get another long one sometime in the future too.
Superb and very useful video. Took me 30 minutes to watch your 9 min. masterpiece so I can absorb and understand every word you said. Newbie cyclist from HKG. 😊
Thanks a lot! Good luck with your future cycle trips!
Hi Ciaran, would you recommend cycle touring wearing cleats or ordinary sports shoes?
I just wore ordinary sports shoes, but some of my friends wore cleats. I guess it's just a matter of preference.
Thanks for this video. I didn't know there was such a thing as free campsites!
Just been reading about you and this part of your journey in Chris’ book. Weird to put faces to words, not always what you imagined. Not in any detrimental way of course! 😂
Hey, I didn't see this comment until now somehow! Chris' books are great. I'd read his blogs in the past but I had no idea he was on my route until he showed up at the right time to help me fix my bike in Baja California. 😂 I had an amazing time cycling with Chris, Dea and all the others we met along this section of the trip.
I just did a similar trip. I forgot to take cash on the ferry and they said there was nothing they could do, so I couldn't eat for 22hrs.
Hey i can see you have done bike packing in Japan , do you know if you can get transport bike bag for train on the train station ? I am planing to go cycling in september just wondering if i can buy it there
You can't get it at a train station but maybe an outdoors shop. I got one from Montbell. I think it cost around 7,000 yen and is only about the size of a water bottle when packed up.
Really enjoyed this and gave me great peace of mind. I am flying to Sapporo in a few days to do a three week cycling trip, very similar route to the one you did. Thank you for sharing your trip !
Thanks Ciaran. Hoping to go from Soya to Sata next year following the footsteps of Alan Booth. Your videos are inspiring!
Thanks! Good luck with your trip!
Great video, but music overwhelmed the speech.
Thank you 😊
Can't be grateful enough for you to making me discover Michael Moore! By the way, I'm cycling through Japan next year, really looking forward to it!
Michael's Oasis covers are amazing! Cool, good luck with your trip!
To get there but love that is where you lived. Our alternative is Sendai over to Kanazawa where I have been and
Been really enjoying your videos. You must have a nice setup as smooth riding. Loved your Hokkaido one also. We did it 5 years ago and going back in July. Once we cycle Hokkaido and cross to Honshu we thought we would end in Sendai and go to Tottori! Might be too much travel to get th
Thanks! Good luck with your trip next year.
Just discovered this video after following your Japan tours. You're very lucky to have seen Steamboat and actually after this year's rains, lucky to have gone through Northern Yellowstone as it is now unpassable. Really enjoy your vids; am planning to do Hokkaido next year.
Wow, I hadn't heard about the Yellowstone rains until I saw your comment. Good luck with your Hokkaido trip next year! It's a great place for cycling.
How long did it take you to bike trough Japan?
For the whole trip not just Hokkaido
It was around 3 months total. Maybe a little more.
@@CiaranRawlinson Thank you for the answer. I was thinking about doing the Hokkaido cycle trip in early November (I mean october), so I can see the autumn foliage. Do you think that would work, or is it too cold then?
Or which month would you recommend the most?
@@jari4493 My trip in this video was in August. Even then some of the mountain passes were cold, and you need to be prepared for the weather like we had going over Shiretoko Pass. I wouldn't attempt this trip too much later in the year. Maybe September. Mid-September is when the Autumn leaves start in Hokkaido. My next video in the series was from Sapporo to Hakodate in mid-October and it was getting cold then. I'm not sure what the northern parts are like then. This is a good site that might have some useful information for you. hokkaidowilds.org/keeping-safe-while-hiking-in-hokkaido I can't advise much because I've only experienced Hokkaido only those two sections of my trip, but definitely make sure you're well prepared for whenever you do it. Good luck!
Enjoyed your video! Many people ride the Baja Divide, but there is a lot of sand. How was the traffic on the road? Any problems or risky sections?
I thought the traffic was ok. Some roads are narrow but the drivers were pretty careful.
Great video and inspiring foe those not yet been to the outer hebrides to get up there and see them. Can I just add though that you need to get Bluetooth mic as can't hear what you're saying a lot of the time with wind and your device being on selfie stick plus music can be bit ott with you talking under it. But keel up the good work .
Great vids btw! Last summer I cycled from Kyoto to Akita, then took the ferry to hokkaido then cycled down to hakkodate. Thinking of returning this July and just doing hokkaido
They've somewhat recently completed a Pacific cycling road that goes from Chiba to Wakayama (1400 km). Seems like a good alternative to the route 1
Wow, just checked that out. Looks amazing. Might have to try some of it if I get the chance!
Great tour, I love bikepacking!
Thanks!
Your series of videos are great. Hope you are enjoying your time in Japan now as well! Cheers
Thanks a lot. Yeah, it's great to be back here!
Dreams come true
Are you still in Japan? Going to Hokkaido soon.
Yes. I'm living in Kansai area now but haven't been to Hokkaido since my trip in 2017. Enjoy your trip!
@@CiaranRawlinson Thank you. I got my plan up to Toyama station. Now I have to plan up to Aomori. And then plan for Hokkaido. I heard the Russian restaurant in Wakkanai has closed. I was hoping to have a meal there.
great video. I hope to do the same thing one day
This is a great video, inspiring me to return to the hebrides on my bike
Brilliant thanks!! Bring 2 nets lol
thanks for making these awesome videos. I will go on a trip like this one day for sure. I have very grand plans lol, but I am curious, did you stop your trip after mexico or did you make it down to Argentina?
Hi! Glad you've enjoyed them. I made it to Panama and finished my trip there, deciding to leave South America for another time. So I'll get a few more videos of the rest of my trip made this year. I recently moved back to Japan to teach here again so I'll hopefully get a few short trips here soon too.
@@CiaranRawlinson awesome man! you are an inspiration!
You Are Grate Sir.
This is a great intro to cycling Hokkaido, thank you, professional level editing, although I’d probably stay along the coast as much as possible. I cycled Shikoku while doing the 88 Temples of the Kobo Daishi and stuck to the coast. The camping, pilgrims huts, good weather and nice people make it wonderful. I was 63 when I did 1100kms on a “mamachari”, camped a bit and did the Shimanamikaido also. I’m 66 now. Will COVID ever end and I get a chance to tackle Hokkaido?
Glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully 2022 is the year when things get back to normal and the borders reopen. 🤞
Hah I’m pretty sure that ridiculous headwind to cape soya is a permanent fixture, looks exactly the same weather as my trip (though a had thicc fog on top of Mt Rishiri 😢) thanks for sharing mate.
Excellent video Ciaran. Many thanks for sharing! We'll definitely pass it on to plenty of riders when tourism returns to this part of the world. Stay safe!
Thanks a lot! It's four years since I left, but I'm finally moving back to Japan next month so I'm looking forward to cycling there again. Hopefully it won't be too long until it's open for tourism too!
@@CiaranRawlinson Good luck with the move back!
Thanks for always making such good videos, your adventures are inspiring!
Amazing video! When is the next one coming?!
Very, very soon (hopefully)! It's >90% done but I keep procrastinating. And guess what. You'll be in it!
Loving all these interactions with the locals! Japanese people seem so warmhearted
