You dont want the guilt of causing her pain, but she deserves the truth more than she deserves ignorant bliss. Loving her isnt avoiding hurting her - you already caused the pain, it just hasnt gotten to her yet. This is rather a case of hurt her less now or more later. He's putting it off telling himself she'll never find out so that he doesnt have to experience her pain
