What he said about building up The Nation of Islam, commonly called The Black Muslims, was not farfetched nor exaggerative. Malcolm X literally put the BMs 'on the map', he was a game-changer as we might say today. Before Malcolm, most people had never even heard of the BMs, not even in the Black Community. But along came Malcolm and the group began to 'go through the roof.' The BMs soared from just a few thousands in the early 50s to tens of thousands by the end of the decade. He was the Chief Spokesman for the Nation of Islam; with his powerful oratorical skills he drew thousands to the organization. In fact, he was such a powerful speaker that no one street corner could him. The NYPD had to set up cordons for several blocks and his voice had to be amplified so he could be heard by others blocks away. Already in a rift with the BMs because of an inflammatory statement he made following the assassination of JFK in 1963, in which he was banned from speaking publicly for 90 days, he also began to hear disturbing reports about his mentor, Elijah Muhammad, whom up to that point he considered to be "honorable", was sexually involved with mostly young, underaged teenaged girls, whom he reportedly impregnated. That, combined with his recent Mecca expedition, changed his former views about the BMs, he began to see a side of them that he had never realized before. Subsequently, he left the BMs. Now, an independent speaker, he began to speak out against the very organization that he once advocated. Now viewed as a threat to the organization's existence by his former brothers, Someone determined Malcolm had to die; as they use the expression in gangster parlance, 'he knew too much for his own good'; Malcolm himself acknowledged that; he said in his speech they were out to get him because 'he knew too much'. And that was finally played out on Sunday Evening, February 21, 1965, at the Audubon Ballroom in Upper Manhattan, NYC.
