I enjoyed the whole video the other day. I was a bit surprised about 'his masterbus' (mixing into)
Como se llama el software para transferir files?. Sampli ?
Samply 👍🏻
Shure SM7b for loud parts and SM57 for quiet.
SUPERUNKNOWN isn’t just good, it’s heroic.
One thing I don't understand: if the goal was to not drive Chris crazy, why not putting the U67 and U47 as close as possible and record with both on separate tracks at the same time, then comping louder and quieter parts from each track. Did they need exactly the same precise spot for recording, or was one only track available for recording (he named the Studer after all)?
Yeah this was my first thought as well
maybe they ran out of outboard, sounds like when they were using those mics was also when they had the crazy multiple compressor/EQ signal chain going on.
I would think you can’t be right on top of two mics at the same time. If you watch where he puts his had to show where the mic was. Just my guess 🤷
Yeah, first you can't be right on top of the two mics and secon-that u67 wouldn't have lasted long....
I disagree with the rationale behind tracking things individually. I don't care how "used to it" people are now, you're always going to get a much more natural performance as a musician if you can see and respond to the people you're playing with. I don't even think you actually sacrifice anything sonically. I listen to tons of producer interviews, and a ton of the biggest producers still track the entire band together. If they're getting amazing sonic results, I'm sure Michael could too.
Atleast play together while tracking drums
If you have watched any Beinhorn interviews you would know that he tried to get them to record it live and it just wasn't working. I think the results speak for themselves.
Try recording female opera singers! I did it for ten years and trying to get them close to the mic when they had voices like rocket engines was not easy. I used a U87 with a ribbon mic mounted above pointing downwards which allowed me to capture both flavours and I could blend to taste. 😎
@@kadiummusic I am suprised more people don’t use 2 mics for vocals. Seems like you can get a really full sound and get depth.
It did sound like he was right up On the mic. It’s a sound I’ve tried to reproduce in my own recordings. This was extremely helpful. And the speaker trick is really cool, too. Sounds to me like it would produce a delayed layering effect? Something for me to try. Great video!
Working with Eric was the most joyless musical experience of my career. All science, no soul.

The out of phase speakers I guess means one of the speakers is out of phase ? And is it firing right at the mic? I always wondered this even with James Hetfield singing on the Black Album with two small speakers firing at his face instead of wearing headphones while recording.
This is the way I use it: place one speaker out of phase and position the microphone in the middle, where the sound from both speakers cancels out the most. This way, the mic picks up less of the sound coming from the speakers and focuses more on the vocals.
My favourite of the grunge era bands and the production on this album is unreal - the drums are awesome. My only criticism is that it’s too long. Would’ve been much better with 9 or 10 songs.
Wow. I recorded with Ryan in 2005 at pulse recordings in LA. He is a legend. Next time you speak with him, ask him about the neve sidecar at pulse.
Love it man thank you!
whoa! awesome and incredibly insightful. One of the greatest rock records ever. That sounds like he was trying to get fired! lol. Love the tidbit that they gave Chris the controls when recording his vox. That makes a ton of sense and is awesome. But it occurred to me while listening, why not park the U67 and the U47 2 feet from each other and let him switch which one he's signing into when he wails? Comp the takes afterwards and no diaphragms would be harmed... would that introduce phase issues? I'm shite with that stuff.
One of my all timers...... So many reasons why too.
i thought he used Friedman amps....?
Depends on the era. He definitely has, but many of the most famous tones are Bonner.
@@dylannolan2000 Bogner? and dang....i've gat a JJ Jr thinkin that's his mini pride and joy....
thanks for your work!!!
All of this is completely unnecessary
And yet …
Let us know when you make some gold records.
Albums I like always gave me a weird visual theme. Super unknown made me see dead trees in the wind and the colour red, I'm not sure why but it's cool to me.
This was 🔥🔥🔥
Great video! I had no idea ozzy didn't like studio, his voice is so unique!
The finished product is one of the greatest records of all time in every respect and detail.
Ozzy doing the Masonic finger on the lips.
He traded business cards?
Good story. Thank you :)
It’s a great record, but I really dislike how he speaks about it as it was HIS thing, you ate there to serve the band not your frustrated art career
It sounds like the record label hired him to be him, not to serve the band. If he was there to serve the band, they would've made the quick record they wanted.
@ the record company hired him, exactly
@@devolucionario Yes, so, it's as much of his thing as it is theirs. He was hired to get that out of them and he did. I'm not sure what your complaint is and I'll never understand people like you making comments like that toward someone who was actually there.
@ I would hate working with someone like that, that’s my complaint, seems like that was the case with the band
@ it’s called creative control, most musicians are keen to keep control over their own music, industry record labels are just trying to get a product that sells, that’s where these characters come in, not working for the band but for the label, it’s a very uncomfortable situation and band were forced into it, especially with entitled self indulgent muppets like this one, that’s my opinion, seems like the band would agree, regardless of the end result
Michael Wagener uses pink noise fed to the amps to align phase
I don't understand that? Can you explain, or link the video where you learned it?

It's amazing to hear the guitar sounds, mesa boogie had a new line of amps that helped propel the guitar tones to a new level. Really cool to hear this time frame captured so well.
ive read somewhere that Ozzy did not enjoy working with him.......Great album though
That’s probably because Beinhorn tries to get the best performances from artists. He’s a perfectionist.
You’re the producer. Tell him “hey we’re going to try to do it a different way. It’s going to be great, we’re just going to sing the track and let it rip.”
Sounds like they were assholes.
Isn’t it the Bowie mix of Raw Power where everything is “organized”?
Their best album, wore out that CD
Nice one
Ozzy does NOT have one of the greatest voices ever. But it is unique and fits his music perfectly.
“doesn’t NOT” is a double-negative, which is like saying that Ozzy DOES have one of the greatest voices ever
He absolutely DID have one of the great rock voices ever. His unique timbre made him great. most people have only heard a few songs from him early in his career and much later in his career. From 72 to 82 he was as good as any rock and metal vocalist there was. Amazing range and amazing melodies. He had a gift for it.
@@notanotherjamesmurphy5574 It was a spell check. You know what I meant.
@@mr.brenman2132 For me a "great" voices sounds great right out of the singer's mouth. Plant had a great voice, Daultry, Perry, Shaw, DeYoung... Ozzy needs a crap ton of production to make him sound good on records... It's all smoke and mirrors.
@@DMDvideo10 No he didn't. He's been recording his vocals since 1970 in some of the crudest conditions possible. The first Black Sabbath album was recorded in a day. Very little production was done on his vocals in the prime of his career. No pitch correction. No auto tune. All he did was double his vocals. Very few takes in the studio. No effects. Max Norman has done many interviews on the process. Master of Reality, Vol. 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage, Technical Ecstasy, Never Say Die, Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of A Madman, are some of the greatest rock and metal vocals ever and he was fantastic live doing a crazy amount of shows. There was no studio magic in those days. His melodies were genius. None of those albums are great without those vocals or melodies. On Sabatoge his vocals were extremely intense and high pitched. As good as anything Robert Plant has ever done.
Saw Black Sabbath on last tour. His voice was brutal. He was a great singer but really without the technology is career would have ended years ago. Still an amazing icon!
That's literally every vocalist from his era that sung hundreds of shows live every year. He's literally given it all with his vocal cords. He's gotten everything out of them that he can and he wasn't ever taking care of them. In the beginning they were playing multiple shows in one day.
I think it is one of the greatest albums of all time, up there with Abbey Road and Led Zeppelin IV and (insert here)
This is the kind of producer Depeche mode needs. A band stuck in their own ways.
So cool hearing about how strong Chris’s voice was. Maybe I’m biased, because he’s my favorite singer of all time, but when I first saw him live in 2005 with Audioslave I was blown away by the power of his voice. I remember cracking up when he sang the first line from the first song, “Your Time Has Come.” Not even a high register or anything, but his voice felt like it was going THROUGH me. I’ve been blessed to have been able to see a lot of bands and singers live in my younger days - Halford, Dickinson, Anselmo, Ozzy. Nobody had the same effect that Chris had when I heard him sing.
Sad to say, but I think that prima donnas, no matter who they are, need to realize that they're only as good as the studio makes them.
A perfect album.
Hahaha!
