Riding Reindeer in Mongolia with Verena Sutherland | Ep. 20
In this episode of 'Happy Trails,' host Jess delves into the adventures of Verena Sutherland, who recently returned from an exhilarating two-week journey in Mongolia, riding both horses and reindeer.
Verena shares her experiences with the nomadic cultures, including the challenges of herding reindeer, the hospitality of the herding families, and the unique lifestyle of Mongolian nomads. The conversation spans topics from traditional horsemanship and saddle design to cultural practices observed among Mongolia's horse and reindeer herders.
It also touches on broader themes of minimalistic living, cultural richness, and animal handling practices in Mongolia. Jess and Verena explore the cultu...

A morning of trail riding and playing over cross country jumps at Christie Hoffman Park in Tewksbury, NJ condensed into a few minutes. Silas Canyon Trail, Wind River Range, Wyoming

I planned to take my friend, Sara, on an amazing 12 mile out-and-back ride to Island and Upper Silas Lakes in the Wind River Range. Unfortunately, our ride was cut short when River pulled a shoe in a tricky, rocky stream crossing. The moose sighting made our shortened ride worth it though! We staged at Christina Lake trailhead which has two corrals and numerous hitching rails. It is a small par...

We camped near Louis Lake Road and rode in the Shoshone National Forest. The trail was a combination of dirt roads, ATV trails, and cow paths. We also did a fair amount of bush-whacking to make our route into a loop. The highlight of the ride was climbing a huge hill following the powerlines to a fantastic view of the snow covered peaks of the Wind River Range. About us: Jess and Byron are full...

    What are the different colors for? Did you use the plastic marking tape & clothespins? Are there any "rules" regarding marking turns, etc? I will be marking the trail for a Dalmatian Road Trial (25 miles on horseback) next year, so I am looking for ways to mark the trail! Our trail will be a 6 mile loop (repeated), so I only need to mark about 6 miles. Thank you!

      @@pstrupp2687 the colors indicate the different loops that use that section of trail. You are correct, it is surveyors tape wrapped around clothes pins. Turns were marked with 3 ribbons in a triangle pattern. You could also use an arrow to mark a turn. Good luck!

    What do you think? Do you use leg protection on your horse in cactus country? I give my own opinions on using boots while trail riding and lots of other Arizona specific stuff in the full podcast episode, located here: rideclimb.com/podcast/southern-arizona-trail-riding/

    • @rideclimb3235
      @rideclimb3235 6 месяцев назад

      Great question! I think that if you were going to use leg protection on your horse, it should be made of leather or a pvc coated neoprene to prevent the spines from getting hopelessly embedded in the material. A lot of sport boots are made of foam, neoprene, and fleece which could hold onto cactus spines so they would end up continually poking your horse as they work their way deeper into the fabric. What do you think? Do you use leg protection?

    • @jessicaisbrecht2021
      @jessicaisbrecht2021 2 года назад

      That depends on the availability and/or price of hay. I usually feed soaked hay pellets and beet pulp along with a ration balancer and supplements, plus 8-10 lbs of hay twice per day. If I can, I like to provide hay 24/7 in a slow feed net.

    • @jessicaisbrecht2021

      We bring enough to sustain us if we are going somewhere remote. Other times we base camp for weeks or months at a time so I usually make weekly (or 10 day) shopping trips. I've had to drive an hour or more to find a feed store in some areas.

      @jessicaisbrecht2021 2 года назад

      I understand your frustration. We also clean up after others regularly. I assure you that we did not leave any garbage. The trail markings are placed just before the event and removed right after. This event is permitted through the National Forest Service. We do everything we can to be good stewards of the environment. Thank you for your concern.

      @@jessicaisbrecht2021 Thank you so much for being good stewards. My goal is to leave everything better than I found it and try and conserve these National Forest lands and wilderness areas for my kids and grandkids.
