1955 Field Day - Radio Club of Tacoma - Restored film with sound!
In 1955, the Radio Club of Tacoma filmed their annual Field Day event, held at Joe Asplund's farm (K7IG) about 30 miles from Tacoma, WA. The camera operator worked for TV station KTNT (channel 11, now KSTW) - John Kelley W7KKN. The original 16mm film was processed and edited at KTNT studios. The main studio announcer (name not recorded) then did a voice over with background music.
The soundtrack was ALWAYS external - it was originally on open-reel tape. Over the years it was transcribed to cassette, and finally dubbed onto a cheap Radio Shack tape sometime in the 1980s. The 16mm film was converted to VHS around the same time.

For the upcoming Classic Exchange CW contest I will be using this wonderful recreation of a 1946 "wood slat" transmitter (6V6, 2-4 watts output, 40 meters CW) paired with a restored BC-348Q Signal Corps receiver from WWII (restored by Rich KR7W. It's on loan to me from the Radio Club of Tacoma W7DK from the W7OS Memorial Museum). In this video, no actual contact is made but you can hear the tra...

6m SSB and CW Aurora Backscatter Propagation - what it sounds like
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.5 месяцев назад
As pretty much everyone on Earth knows, we just experienced a level G5 (the highest level) "solar storm" that caused aurora to be visible over much of the northern tier of the United States, and even as far south as Alabama and North Texas. Ham radio operators have long known that during an aurora, that propagation conditions can change dramatically - wiping out HF but possibly enhanced in VHF....
Twin fawns born on our property today
Просмотров 2526 месяцев назад
We moved from the city out to a beautiful 5 acres in a semi-rural area in unincorporated Kitsap County in December of 2017. Just about every year, there has been a new generation of deer born on the property. But this morning, while heading down to the barn for some chores, we spotted a brand new pair of fawns, who had been born just hours earlier. Dave

It's always fun to work an air mobile station - and when it's an airliner at 34,000 feet, that's about as cool as it can get in ham radio. Watch this short video of my QSO with "Con" WA7E as he was flying over Iowa recently. Have YOU ever worked an airliner? Tell us about it in the comments below! Nice to see a field day movie in colour, made before I was born! Nostalgic memories of black and white movies we watched in local theaters called 'talkies' with that background noise which you hear in this video! Wonderful restoration work Dave! 73 de Jon, VU2JO
10/21/24... You got me!!!😂 I'm in California and just called the wife in Virginia, and told her I was pre-ordering 2 with 8 extra batteries! 😅😂 ❤ I wish it was true!!!
😅👍
Thanks Dave and all involved, that was fun! 😎👍 I was a member of the Radio Club of Tacoma for a very short time in the early 70's. (My call sign was WN7YOY if I remember correctly) I didn't do well because I had a hard time with Morse code, which baffles me to this day because I'm a drummer and musician and rhythmic things seem to come naturally or at least quickly but for some reason Morse code was a struggle I never got a good handle on, so I never actually communicated with anyone that I remember. My interest in music soon eclipsed my interest in Ham radio although I've maintained a strong interest in electronics DIY, mainly aimed at music synthesizers and audio gear.
Hi John! Thanks for the comment.... You were member 719 (I am member 743) and you joined RCT just after Christmas in 1973! (I joined in August '75 as WN7AWK). Thanks for stopping by. If you ever get near Tacoma on a Saturday, we have an open house from 10 to 2 just about every Saturday of the year (with just a few exceptions for other events). You would always be welcome to stop by for a donut and to reminisce with the folks there - it's always a pretty packed house!
🧐 Why would a generator engine need a rebuild after less than fifty hours of use?
Pretty sure that was an inside joke ;-)
Brilliant! Thank you
What a great story!
74 years!
Nice example of various portable ham antennas. Questions: Do you and the station being contacted most always report 5/9 during contests? Reason I ask is some stations were a little weaker. Also what is the 3rd number? Regards from Nebraska, John N2AO
Great question - but yes that's how most contests work. The "signal report" is always 59 for SSB or 599 for CW regardless of signal level. It's just how contests have worked since the beginning of contests. The third number, in this particular contest, is the serial number of that contact - what number is it in my log. In this video, they aren't really in order due to editing - but if you were to hear the entire session, my serial numbers started at 1 and just worked their way up to around 250 or by the time I was done with the session. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Great video! Steve has always been one of my favs!
My dad built one of these back in the late 50s. He strung a wire antenna out a back window from the house to the garage (about 100+/- a few feet). It worked amazingly well even on shortwave. I wish I still had it, if for nothing else than the nostalgia value.
AJ1G here , Chris from Stonington in SE CT. The auroral scatter propagation was wild here between about 4 PM and 8 PM EDT on Friday May 10 . Worked about 40 stations as far west as Minnesota, down to Virginia, out to southern Ontario a d up to PEI, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, and all over the Northeast with just 100 watts on CW to a little 2 element 6 meter beam pointed north the whole time. What little SSB I heard on 6 meters was so smeared by the Doppler shift caused by the unstable reflection/refraction off the auroral 3:40 curtains that is was impossible to understand. Only have worked auroral scatter here a couple of times over more than 40 years from here. The stuff last week was definitely to wildest!
Cool!
My father was a ham radio operator. I believe he was able to talk to someone on shuttle once.
You can chat with the ISS as it goes over. They have radios and most astronauts are Hams too. Just need to know when it's going to go over, point your Yagi antenna at it, follow it, and start calling. They just might answer! Happens a lot....
Strange resonation.
Yes - VERY strange sound. It's because of the phase changes caused by the aurora. The stronger the aurora, the clearer the audio. Weaker aurora, and the signals are very wispy and thin.
Thanks for recording this, very cool to hear!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dave, a Nice overview K0UO
Thanks Steve!
That's sweet! I have enjoyed the same thing here in West Virginia.
There's something hanging down from bal/nr Knob..a piece of something.😢
back in the day i wish i bought 10 of them kg6mn
Jim, I have a similar but also different story. I was born in 49' a little younger that you. My latest license is a General class KD9OAM. It is great to hear about your radio life.
April Fool's Day!
💯😂😂😂👍
Legend has it, the dark-eyed junco is still there to this day 😅
Nice Loof Lirpa! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have met a lot of interesting and intelligent people in my 32 years as a licensed ham operator! But Bob Heil! Wow! He has to be the happiest and most interesting man I have ever had the privilege of knowing! His talents have no end and his passion to teach and tell you all about everything he knows is unmeasurable! It’s rare to meet a person whose passion makes them so happy that they will do anything to get you excited about it! Be it pipe organs, ham radios, antique t-birds! Bob could talk hours on end with such enthusiasm you WILL LISTEN! Ok, I’ve probably went long enough with this comment but hey! Knowing we lost Bob this last week I’m having a 😢😢 hard time accepting he can no longer answer my emails and my crazy questions! Bob was everybody’s “Elmer” and I am sure there are thousands of hams affected by his passing! 73 Bob 😢 you are already missed!
rip bob heil
Mike - are you saying that since a straight key and a paddle require different Keyer Types to be selected in the cw menu, only the one that matches the menu selection will work?
Stephen's another great guy who has done a lot for the club!
Optical illusion. Reflection of fire on the glass.
Agreed, its a reflection of the fireplace in the restaurant he's in. The menu and lamp reflection are a dead giveaway.
They're a great couple!
Excellent interview! John is a stellar guy. Well done.
Far out. Great video.
This was great! Larry has had such an interesting work life. He's done some really helpful things with our club too!
I have the 756 pro love it but got.to find a new LCD screen got.that whitish egg looking thing
That’s my grandpa!!!!
Love this series!
Nice rig
Enjoyed these interviews with Bob Heil. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
"Hey! Why don't you grow up it's rather pathetic"
Interesting..... you must have spent quite some time working all of that out! Those are really big words. And I think because you've given me SO MUCH to think about, that this comment should be pinned - that way I can remember to re-read your sage advice. Thank you!
nice exactly what I would have used (rotor and rooftop). I unfortunately settled for the Yaesu 450 and a Rohn 5 foot tripod due to light wind load. Put 3 VHF/UHF yagis on top of Yaesu, wind load about 2+ so I am OK. I just came across the opportunity to get a Glen Martin in mint condition, 1 year late so I am going to pass on it. Too many holes in roof and also need forcement. N2SLO
Dave I ❤ this film. Feel free to message or text me
OH MY GOSH!! BILL!!! I was so hoping you would come to see this as well!! So very cool my old friend!! It's been a LOT of years!!!
I can't even remember what the HELL Isaid😂
Pretty sure I got it pretty close :-)
Two great guys that have done the Ham world wonders.
Where? What venue?

Nice rig, I've got the PROII. By the way you left the rit button pushed.
haha! So I did! Alas, that's actually a really old video that I just made "public" yesterday. That radio was sold quite a long time ago. But really nice rig - I kind of miss it!
Thanks for another great interview, and thank you Dr. Heil for great two minutes of whatever. 73'
Wow! Just such an amazing life and work. Glad to see it documented now and not later. Radio and particularly ham radio and rock n roll go hand in hand so much of the time. Many of the pioneer studio engineers had some sort of foot or step up from radio. The electric music , immediate example, -the electric guitar changed the face of music. Amplification has become ever so much the big part of modern musical tone. It was the application notes direct from the pages of the RCA radio tube publications that Leo Fender used as his guide to build the most popular evolution of guitar amplifier designs. He built amplifiers from his radio shop in Fullerton California . First experimenting and building PA systems much like Bob Heil. He rented amplified sound systems from his radio repair shop. His first guitar amplifiers that he produced were sold in 1946 . Before the actual advent of the electric guitar. These were originally built for lap steel Hawaiian guitars popular after WW2 . Soon solid body electric guitars changed the sound of popular music. Electronic experimenters, many of them radio and ham radio guys found their niche behind the scenes in rock n roll. Ham radio provided a resourceful pool of technically adept to lead the evolution. Radio has provided the groundwork for many technical trades and engineering. It's not just aerospace or defense that many amateur radio operators found careers but many hams can be found throughout the professional music trades as well!
Thanks again, Dave! Really enjoying this series
Great interview, thank you Dr. Heil.
