I have been working on it as I sit here. The secret is, the third finger remains on the D string the whole time. It is on the second fret as you play the primary E chord. Then it lays down, barring the second fret to give you an A chord. Then it slides up two frets to give you a B chord ( use the index finger to grab the F# on the E string). Then hit the barre at the 4th fret and slide it down two frets. keeping your third finger on the second fret of the D string, build the primary E chord. Make sure you are hitting the G# on the first fret of the G string.

David Byrne is underrated as a guitarist. That opening riff is harder than it sounds. It needs to be open position: primary E, primary A, and you slide up to B to catch the F# on the second fret. From that F#, the next three emphasized notes are on the g string: 4th fret (the note is b, representing the B chord you are still on) … that note slides down to the second fret (A - you are passing through the A chord)’ and then the first fret (G# - you land on the open E chord). It needs to be in open position and use those open strings, or it doesn’t sound right. I can barely play it, but Byrne does. Probably best to do the open E chord as usual, then use the third finger to barre the second fret (A chord). You slide that third finger up two frets and the index finger to catch the F# on the second fret of the high E string. Then you slither back the way you came. Talking heads forever!
