Building EVee (aka the Novice Narrowboat Build)
Добавлен 24 апр 2023
Daily(ish) videos of me [Jeremy] fitting out the cabin of my new narrowboat, Escape Velocity - EVee to her friends.
This is the first time I've done anything like this alone... I guess I'm a mostly competent DIYer (in three past I've built and fitted a flat pack kitchen and I've replaced shower cubicles... Stuff like that)
So this is not instructional - just 'a guy on the internet who doesn't know he can't', recording progress for future me :-)
I've bought the best shell and best engineering I could find (she's a Josher from Johnathan Wilson with electric drive and other 'sailaway bits' from Finesse in Sheffield.)
So I guess she's a 'custom sailaway'.
And yes, now I'm broke so fitting out myself 😂 well, that and I've always wanted to design/build a home... I just never thought it'd be a boat!
Other folks fitting out narrowboats I'd suggest:

Electrical progress - Shocking 😮 (not 🤞)
How can you make such a mess of something that is that easy to do?
great stuff, are you an engineer, i spotted those grips, they are pretty rare and from USA? i know an engineer who has them ! looking out for a set too !
Wow, you’re doing a grand job! That “5G” on the roof can you provide me with detains please?
Congratulations on a successful maiden voyage. I imagine you must be grinning from ear to ear now. I know I would be.
Looking great. would concur with other comments, regarding solid wooden handles, as a first impression. Having said that, you might consider the nautical strap handles, perhaps mounted vertically for ease of use...
Folks have certainly made useful comments and inspired explorations 😎
Definitely looking great the work you have done. I like what your thinking with the colours of the handles, what about wooden pull handles that you could have more options to either colour red & green or make them match the wood trim of your kitchen? I hope this give you some more ideas to work with and I'm sure what you choose will look and work fab for you.
Nice idea. I guess I'd need to find handles that aren't already finished. I did see some interesting wooden 'twist' handles a while back... Definitely good for thought, thanks
great vid on the vid nice work thanks lee
Cheers for the algo comment 😃
Solid handles are going to be your best option. Maybe something in the same color as the accent on top of the drawer? Or a pewter color to match the stove ?
Interesting colour idea! (I think a fair amount of my resistance to 'standard' things had been my reluctance towards 'brushed chrome' or some such... But your suggestion made me wonder what I might find in the 'black nickel' of my sockets which is subtly unusual... There's some out there to consider 😎
@@BuildingEVee Or an oil rubbed bronze?
How about the terdishanal half cup tipe brass
They would work on the top drawers, but I think they'd be a bit awkward to 'get under' to open the lower drawers... 🤔
Kitchen looking good 😁 ,please don’t go with the leather handles as very un hygienic in a kitchen 😬. Lots of handles on the market , personally I wouldn’t have anything that can be caught on clothing as a boat is a tight space , smooth edges best. Really impressive job 👍 ( kitchen installer and boat builder 😏).
Good thoughts - I'd considered they might need replacing/cleaning, but not really in a food prep context. 👍
In a future cruise with a GPS speed app on your phone would give some idea of speed and just as interesting, your kWh per mile. From the video footage I guess you were doing 3 mph when you mentioned 3 kW, that would be a very decent result. I would be very interested in a technology wrap-up episode when the fitout series ends if you had the time, though I would understand if you decide to sail off into the Cambridgeshire sunset with no more YouTubing. What you have posted so far will be a tremendous resource for future narrowboat fitouts.
I'm not set on whether I'll do more cruising videos... Naturally the audience for them would be different so it feels like I'd be polluting your feed if you're here for the build... I really struggled to know what speed I was doing, especially against the flow of the rivers. (I 'gunned it' up the tidal section as I figured best spend as little time out there as I could). The app/GPS trace is a good idea - have you used anything similar - or have an example of someone else doing that?
What a great culmination of all your work. Congratulations on your maiden voyage.
Thank-you. Unfortunately I'm still seeing a fair about if work ahead - but being far enough along to be able to live out and about again is huge - I'm very happy/pleased 😃
Well done 👍, great to see EVee out on the water. Sorry to bring up a negative but what were the noises around the 48min mark ??
I'm impressed you got to 48mins - so you definitely deserve an answer! (I don't see an enquiry as a negative at all) That's the prop shaft noise that only happens in a small rev-range. It sounded like something wanting to wear-in , the prop shaft seal being a bit tight or some such... And having spoken to the builders that's pretty much in line with their thoughts... Apparently it seems to happen more often to boats that start life not moving much (EVee essentially didn't move at all for a year) somtimes getting a buildup on the prop shaft We expect it to disappear as I move more, or at worst will get dealt with when she's blacked.
@@BuildingEVeeAah , interesting, I will probably be facing the same then as my boat is still in the shed after 20 months 🙄😂😂 Could you do a vlog on a cruise with time and battery usage sometime please? And I always watch all the video ( albeit @ 2x speed!! 😂😂)( sorry 😐).
@@davidrussell7837 from my understanding, if it's not in the water I imagine you'll be fine.
What a lovely trip out - so relaxing and beautiful scenery ☺️. Once you have finished the fit out, are you planning to continuous cruise or have a home mooring?
I'm definitely a continuous cruiser... For me boats move, and those things which seem like hassles of moving have become things I like and miss when staying put in one place. I was stopped by a flood my first winter, and later by COVID restrictions, but other than those I've cc'd through the winter too 😎
@@BuildingEVee exactly! Wishing you lots of happy cruising 🥰
Fantastic! Great to see the first run🙂
Glad you enjoyed it!
Almost sounds like a vibration or a prop out of balance causing the high pitch harmonics on a hatch cover to vibrate. Some thing is not right. Can you feel it in the tiller, or through the deck?
No vibrations or anything. Only happens in a small rev range. It sounded like something wanting to wear-in , the prop shaft seal being a bit tight or some such... And having spoken to the builders that's pretty much in line with their thoughts... Apparently it seems to happen more often to boats that start life not move-in much (EVee essentially didn't move at all for a year), some buildup on the prop shaft We expect it to disappear as I move more, at worst I'll get it cleaned off when blacking.
great to see you out and about
It's great to be out of the marina... Nice bunch of people, but I'll take being "out" every time 😊
Whisper quiet. I hope you enjoy it Jeremy. Well done.
Yup, it's very different... Even with the genny running it's amazing 😁
great vlog crannking it on the cut thanks lee
Glad you enjoyed it
I've fitted many sinks over many years and have always cut out the whole hole, most have come with a template to do just that.
Next show me sand the floor. 😜
😁 In my defense, the description says "Seriously this one's not exciting... It's here for completeness. I really wouldn't blame you if you skip it!!"
@@BuildingEVee I ment no offense. Just a Karate Kid reference. Nothing I have seen so far has made me think you would settle for anything less than what you want. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing you cruising soon.
Honestly none taken - you'd have to try harder than that!! 🤪
@@BuildingEVee 😜
I know it’s your house but I didn’t mind the colour.
Honestly, the camera flattered it, it was jarring to me.
Well done for persevering - it will all be worth it in the end ☺️👏🏻
Indeed... It's just a matter of getting to a point where the end can be seen 😎
great vid on the build looks good keep up the great vlogs thanks lee
Thanks for the ever present encouragement 😎
You did the correct thing, I’ve never known anyone ( other than your commenter ) that doesn’t cut out the whole sink area. Not a fan of the supplied putty rather use silicone and seal all cut edges ( again I use silicone).
Looks nice
Honestly - the camera flatters. It was bright yellow in comparison to the walls themselves.... It had to go!
nothing wrong with attaching the spacer to the saw if it works, nice job well done. agree shame about the colour but you'll fix that easy I'm sure. regards Conor
It usually takes me a few tries with methods that are less than ideal, before I stumble into something which seems to work better. Yup - I do fix the colour (not what I'd call easy, but yeah 😎)
@@BuildingEVee if it works it works, personally as a carpenter i'd have gone for the trusty handsaw. certainly the safest option when its a circle.
good see you get on wit the boa build thanks lee
Thanks - you're a reliable viewer! 😎
As a builder, I never use plumbers putty around the sink, I always use a good silicone, it squashes down better than the putty as you have probably round the sink is hard to pull down with the clips to get a good seal on the putty as the putty is so stiff
Thanks for the advice, yes let's say that's why I overdid one of the clips! 😁 Silicone was my plan until I found the putty in the box and saw it on their instructions!
The experts in town don't bother with plumbers putty or silicone, between the sink and the worktop, whatsoever. They do, however, first seal around the edges of the hole that they cut, to stop the worktop wood from blowing. Anyhow, reducing the diameter of a drain pipe is typically considered to be a No No, as it creates a place for blockages to form. Do narrowboat hulls typically have the sink spigot smaller than 40mm?
@@rdukes3173 They do usually reduce but personally I go big , I have a 35mm fitting on mine . Biggest problem is keeping the trap high enough to get a thro’ fitting high enough above water level. Using a bath trap is a good way 👍
Job done ☑️🥰
Indeed. I'll improve on the putty at some point.
35mm hole is standard, you could have used a hole saw but that was a neat little tool . What height did you manage to get the sink through fitting off the water ?
I didn't think a hole saw would be ideal through stainless, and these are designed for the job so I was less likely to make a mess of it! 😁 I'll check the height at some point
great vlog on build the boat thanks lee
Cheers 😎
Defo show the maiden voyage please.
It's a bit long, but it's up at last ruclips.net/video/jgDRuzo1jTM/видео.html
looks great. Maybe corner trim to hide the screws?
People who've seen it say that they didn't notice until I point them out... But 'I know'... I think the fire extinguisher is a good plan, and it saves me adding a matching trim [unnecessarily, apart from my daft desire for things to match] on the port side where the screws are correctly hidden.
@@BuildingEVee hard tp be a perfectionist on a hand built boat with a bespoke interior
It's true, I do usually want things to be 'right'. Having little experience, sometimes 'perfect' is easier to define than good enough, added to which I usually don't have a decent appreciation of what will matter, nor how capable I'm not [even more true considering limited tools/facilities]. These things combine in ways that are not helpful towards progress, but I think/hope will mean that I'm happier in what I've managed to make longer term. I'm lucky, I have time and I've stopped beating myself mentally for using too much of it 🙂
Always good to see your new videos. What 12v fans did you use for where your mushroom vents are? I completely agreed and had the same idea to reduce condensation etc, as it will constantly exchanges air. Keep up the good work
If you have gas flames running a lot then I think it's almost unavoidable... Some people have a smaller hole in the roof ply than their mushrooms would accommodate... Mine have full 100mm holes, but the fan blades and gauze count against that... (I only have two roof vents, electric cooking and no fire). The fans I'm using are in the description of this video where I waffle on about ventilation - ruclips.net/video/WWl3ok-g1hc/видео.htmlsi=wz-9v4cwP4WOmXTe Specifically, I'm only trying to extract moist air at the times when it's generated so I want to move lots of air for short periods... I guess I could 'dim' them to a low background, but they're not really designed for that as an ongoing thing, my guess is they'd fail sooner than I'd be happy with but I don't know 🤷♂️
Definitely post it, be good to see her on her way
It does feel nice to have 'escaped' the marina 😎
Maiden voyage gets a 👍
Okey dokey
Nice work
Cheers. It's working out fine so far.
Oh yes please to the maiden voyage! It’s all very exciting as it’s really coming together nicely ☺️
Ok, I'll have a look at editing it up 😎
Yes, please post the maiden voyage
Right o, will do!
It'll be interesting to see you review it after a few months of use - how did you get along with it, how much did it cost to use it.
I can already tell you I like it for the space it gives me (no black tank). I'm keeping an eye on usage so I'll update in due course 😎
@@BuildingEVee Yeah that's what appeals to me too! Cleaning my cat's litter box is quite enough 🤣
I had the same problem with a hole saw arbour getting stuck in an Erbauer battery drill. A massive pair of adjustable grips freed it and then Screwfix replaced the drill under warranty within three minutes of me arriving in their store. They gave me a new drill and driver set with a new three year warranty. It was the second time I'd returned a drill too. The previous one's batteries died after just a year of narrowboat building but they replaced the whole lot including the impact driver that came in the set. You can't beat an Erbauer warranty as if you actually use the tools you've got a tool for life!
I've been loaned most of the tools I'm using... I was ready to buy things, but lucky to have generous friends. Glad you had success with your situation, I think I'll get the angle grinder out.
It was unfortunate that after fast forwarding, the video started showing fingering of cinders in the bucket. Surely not though I.
😂 If you go back a little, you'd see that ward the initial/test burn... Water and ~1m of (clean) toilet roll.
Wouldn't want to be paying these guys by the hour..next thing maybe some fenders for your boat?.
Steve charged for the job, I'd happily choose right over fast anyway 👍 I have some rope fenders, you're right I need to cut some hooks for them
Wow! An air fryer for your backside 😂
🤣 I'm not sure about combining those two functions!!
Everything should have a dual purpose when you have limited space! 😂😂
Interesting 🤔, not sure about the location of the electrical outlet 😐. I’m not sure what I think of incinerator toilets but it’s your business 😉😂😂
Yeah, knowing what I know now, I'd put it up and left, but I'm sure it'll be fine where it is (else I'd move it - an extra hole in a boxed in area wouldn't be problematic). Toilet choice is definitely a personal choice of which compromises to make, I'm curious to see how much I use the composter once I have that fully installed too.
@@BuildingEVeecomposter for No.1 ( my Mrs says 🙄) but we went with cassette for No. 2 😐 Starting to come together now 👍
