Hello Jess, firstly thank you for sharing your content. I have a background in data and analytics so I appreciate your approach to the game. I have a question having watched the lesson you had with Jamie Donaldson, have you a process/strategy for working out the length of the putting swing given there are so many different putting scenarios that vary according to the course you are playing.
Excellent video! I've read Dan's book and I'm a big fan as well. Release 1 and release 2 definitely give you more confidence but I'm not brave enough to do release three quite yet (on the coures) ⛳🏌️. 😂
Thank you, Tony! I feel the same! I’m working my way up to release 3 ☺️🤣
Swing is looking solid Jess 👍
Thank you, Kent 🙌
About 6 weeks ago. You put a vid on my search for scratch.. So why aren't you updating what comps you play. How you played what you scored what your handicap is, has it gone up has it gone down... Say something.... Don't just put up a headline then ignore your subs
Hi Martin, ignore my subs? Wow. I've been sharing what I'm working on in my game to improve. For example, in my 9 hole course vlog, it was clear that missing that number of greens wasn't going to help me get to scratch, so straightening up my irons has been my focus, as I shared in my last video. Or if I am going to miss greens, I know it's my short game and putting that will save me and I've shared how I'm working on those areas. I know this is going to be a long and hard challenge, so I'm not expecting it to happen quickly but I am sharing what I'm working on to build myself into a scratch golfer...hopefully.
@@jessratcliffegolf You brought out a vlog about getting to scratch...so don't just stop telling us what you are doing....will take about 30 qualifying comps at least to get to scratch...so what comps have you entered? medals, stablesfords? what did you shoot, how did you play , how many points? what is your latest handicap? are you going up are you going down? what? ...i play in about 6 qualifiers a month, my handicap changes every week....it seems you have started something then never tell us about it...
I have been telling you what I'm doing. If you've watched my videos since I shared the one about starting the search for scratch, you'll see that I've been working on the areas of my game, where I'm currently leaking the most shots and that I need to improve to score better, like my ball striking and putting. The goal with my content is to share how I'm working on my game on the search for scratch to, hopefully, get there one day. It's not a 6 week challenge or sprint to cut my handicap. And I'm not expecting to get there quickly because it's hard and I have a long way to go. I said that in the search for scratch video. My goal is to share the process on the search, in the hope that sharing what I'm working on along the way will be helpful to other golfers.
Great tip to film yourself on the course, or have your playing partner do it!
It’s so helpful!
Excellent student and teacher …..quite pedagogical on what to do & practice. But here in Canada…most of our grass surrounding greens are a bit more high / tick grass…grain opposite of the green to add on difficulties so adjustments have to be done & secondly greens looks slower than greens in North America + 11 or 12 . ❤🎉 appreciations + many thanks to our Guru Dan :)))
Thank you! That's interesting to know, I've haven't played golf in Canada or the US but will remember that for when I do, hopefully ☺️
I think you explained release 1&2 better than Dan - Jess 😅 though your version of release 2 looks more like a 3 😁
Haha I’m not sure about that but thank you! I know, still working on that Release 2 🤣
I used to roll my wrists and it was hard to fix. Getting to the 9oclock parallel club (aka that Justin Thomas pre-shot routine) and then simply turning to the top is a drill I used *a lot*. The parallel club should see your left hand opposite your right thigh with the glove logo pointing straight out with the club face pointing down, not open. But old habits die hard. I liked to feel the pressure in my right index finger at the parallel point. Hope this is of some use !
Thank you, Mark! I’ll give that a go 🤓
Great job explaining some nuisances
Thank you!
Really helpful. You asked what we are struggling with - frightened to even mention the word - the dreaded S(hank) word. It has ruined quite a few cards for me recently. Been given so much advice I'm now totally confused and I know when the ball lands about 30/40 yeards from the pin , before I even get there , that it's going to happen. Talk about all in the head! Practice range shots - no problem - on course - nightmare. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!
Thank you, Caroline! Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that - I know you'll banish those dreaded you-know-whats soon! ☺️
I gave this tip of yours to my golf partner yesterday and he saw huge and immediate improvement, he was so happy and told me it was the first improvement he has seen in his game in a long time. I am really enjoying your videos and want to congratulate you on your excellent style of communication. At the moment you and Bryson are my go-to RUclipsrs for golf!
That's made my day, thank you Stu! Wow, that's very kind of you 🙌
Was that a bumble bee or a big flying beetle? 😅
Haha I know! Huge! 🐝🤣
Those girls are a different grade Jess. Great that they've given you inspiration though 👍
They really are! It was incredible to see up close!
Love the muttering to yourself 😂
Haha thank you 🤣
@@jessratcliffegolf I only say that because I do that when I practice, funny old game....😃 have you seen any short game improvement yet?
@@stuartjames2483 I do too! Definitely and it's been particularly helpful as I've been missing a few greens 🤣
Hi Jess, I’ve had the rolly wrist problem for a long time and like you I’ve found some of Adam Porzak’s drills to be really useful. I do find however that setting the wrists very early in the backswing really helps.
Thank you, Gary! ☺️
Yeah Porzak knows his golf👍
I love his channel!
You've been working so hard on your game, and are always very focused. But, remember to try and have some fun out there too.
Thank you, I do 🤓☺️
Great point about videoing the swing on the course occasionally. It's always sooo different to vids of swings on the range like you say. Think sometime I shy away from wanting to see my course swing after seeing nice practice range hit swings - must be braver!
I know that feeling! Thank you 🤓
What I’ve found over the last few months Jess is, exaggeration is helpful, whatever plane you’re moving on, it’s probably not what you think, try to exaggerate, I’ve found it helpful.
Thank you, Neil! I will! 🤓
👍👍
🙌
Love it! This is a great reminder of positive positions in the back swing and the two ball drill will be going into my next practice session. I am just getting my sister out with me now and we are ready for this drill or parts of it. The grip, stance and alignment are already pretty good. You have this nailed and are into the fine tuning… super. And of course remember - GIR & FWH all mean very little with a tight short game. Short game! Short game! Short hane! 😂
Thank you, Ed! That’s awesome to hear! Let me know how you both get on with the two ball drill 🙌. Exactly! Fine tuning and short game, short game, short game 🤞🤣
Video is key Jess...what we think we do in our swings is pretty much never what is actually happening. You're making good progress, well done 👍 White is never good on a golf course, especially a wet one 😉
It really is, isn’t it - feel and real can be so different 🤣. Thank you, Kent!
@@jessratcliffegolf For sure! In my head I swing like Steve Elkington or Ernie Els...Imagine my surprise when it actually looks like an octopus falling 40' out of a tree 🤣
@@KentnDebi haha!
White is a dangerous choice on a wet course, although mostly all gloves and shoes are white, go figure... My bug bear is early extension, I use a reverse loop from Hank Haney and wierd sort of back towards target ball at the side thingy from Alex Elliot in my preshot routine. For me the ball tells you everything you need to know, I tend to practice on the course, driving range is a winter thing I think. People say golf is a journey which is a really cheesy saying, but for me it's about finding what swing is best for you and your athletic ability. Once you've found that out and you've gotten older you need to change it all as your body changes, dumbest game ever 😂😂 I love it
I’m working on exactly the same thing so was great to see how your practicing to improve your technique
Right bum cheek back on the backswing, left bum cheek back on the down swing (forget the right leg, let it just follow). Left shoulder should definitely lift up on strike.
Thank you 🤓
Love Dan Grieve stuff, I've been working on the releases as well with some better results. I've got one of those 3 ft circles I put around the hole and challenge myself to get 8 out of 10 inside the circle using DGs techniques, my best is 5 at the moment. brilliant to see what you've taken from it and implemented it in your game, I've been trying his bunker technique as well with better results in terms of strike but still struggling to control distances such is the golf journey
I love Dan's stuff too. That sounds like an awesome performance drill. I'm the same with controlling distance out of bunkers. One thought that's helped is from Dan's book, where he talks about imagining how far you want to send the sand. It's a work in progress but it's been helpful so far. Thank you for watching, Stuart!
@@jessratcliffegolf I'll be honest Jess only just subscribed, you only popped up on my feed but I thought it was an interesting perspective, taking DGs teachings and showing how you personally were doing with the practice. I normally look for local hampshire/dorset/sussex golf vlogs, ones that you can have some familiarity with you know. Anyway keep up the good work 👍
@@stuartjames2483 thank you!
Ahhh wouldn't it be wonderful if we actually could "forever fix" a swing fault, whether it be that rolling of the wrists and tugging the club inside, or getting the hips to turn fully on the down swing to a text book finish, but unfortunately it never seems to be the case, that is why the pros are constantly working on the core fundamentals of the swing, keeping all the basics in check, there seems to be a million and one things we can practice and work on within the golf swing, I believe the true skill is knowing what we need to work on first, knowing what needs fixing first. It seems that you have the skill, the golfing instinct to have worked out a swing issue and the golfing IQ and knowledge to be able to fix it, so very well do to you for that, you're ahead of the game Jess, we'll done. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It really would! Thank you, Olly! It's always a work in progress ☺️🤓
I think the last few were more release three as the butt of the club finished pointing towards the ground and not towards your belt. But it was the release you needed for that shot.
Thank you, David. They were - I can struggle with being more 3 than 2 but as you say, with that amount of green, it ended up being the better release to play ☺️
The good old leadbetter drill....nick price and sandy lyle did this for years
It's been a great help ☺️
Money well spent with DG!
He’s a genius!
Shame you are not sticking with the strong grip. Maybe try to get your left shoulder pointing more downwards towards the ball. (Think tilt not turn)
This was filmed quite a while ago so I've gone back to the stronger grip as it felt more natural to me 🤓
@@jessratcliffegolf Hi Jess. Thanks for getting back to me. I had no idea you had produced so many good videos. Your enthusiasm and pleasant attitude make them a joy to watch. If you haven't already had one, get a lesson on course management with a pro, it will be eye opening and help to reduce your handicap.
Thank you, Barry! I really appreciate that ☺️
Have you seen the John Daly and Bryson video? They talk about how important it is to get fitted for the grips and that the thicker the grip on all the clubs better because it prevents the rolling of the wrist.
Oh I haven’t! I’ll check that out ☺️
Excellent description of what Dan told you Jess. He also wanted the clubhead accelerating past your hands and 'holster' the club low and narrow 👍👍👍 It's really difficult as I feel like I'm flipping at the ball...practise, practise and more practise. I will get there 🤞🤞🤞
Thank you, Kent! Yes, very true! 🙌
I have been binge watching Dans videos this week but your explanation of the lead shoulder movement using his drill for release one was excellent 🙏
Thank you, Martin!
How refreshing to see someone explain what they are working on, instead of a coach telling us what NOT to do.
Thank you, Barry! I really appreciate that ☺️
A gentle push with a mild arc and the dimpled globe hits home!! This video paired well with my steak and eggs.
Haha! Thank you, Lupe!
(Away the week you posted this, so a bit delayed in my comment.) Hi Jess, you are a much better golfer than me, so please take these observations / questions with a pinch of your favourite herb, spice, sauce or condiment… - “Bit hot” and there you dressed in black!! - You did not appear to measure your aiming point (with fingers) once you had read the slope; just wondered if you did not do it or you just edited out? - Like you said, lots of chip & runs, did Jamie explain how to use AimPoint when chipping? If not, and you’ve got a follow-up lesson, you might want to ask. - Was your chip on Hole 4 meant to be a Release 1? It looks to be a lot of arms with the left shoulder moving downwards rather than rotating around the left foot pivot. - On the 9th hole, when you said “73 yards”, it cut to you playing your shot. I wondered if that was close to one of your ‘standard’ Release 2 or 3 yardages as you finished quite short of the hole? (For example, I know that with my Sand Wedge R2 is, give or take, 50 yards and R3 is 75 yards.) I'm looking forward to catching up on your Dan Grieve videos over the next few days.
Thank you for your observations / questions, Mark - they’re always very welcome! - I know! I didn’t do myself any favours wearing black in that heat 🤣 - For the longer putts, I did but edited out as it was a lengthy video and on the shorter putts, they were only subtle breaks so I was aiming to the edge of the hole 🤓 - We didn’t cover using AimPoint for chip and runs but that’s a great point. - On the 4th hole chip, I went a little long with the backswing and then caught it heavy so didn’t quite come off as I hoped ☺️ - Funnily enough, 73y would normally be a full 54° for me but hitting downhill and to a back pin made me think I needed to play it shorter (so I didn’t risk going off the back where it’s ☠️) and it was just way too short. It was a good experience filming over 9 holes as I find I can rush my routines when filming for fear of being slow so it’s helped me see where I might make choices too quickly and then pay the price for it. So lots of learnings to take into the next 9 hole video ☺️
Practise, practise and more practise to get this release ingrained for me. I've been playing 'hinge and hold' for so long...
It’s the cupping the wrist in the takeaway that I need to practise with my ol’ rolly wrists 🤣
@@jessratcliffegolf ...and the reason for your 'alignment stick' short! Stop the roll inside 👍
@@KentnDebi exactly! ☺️
Very helpful Jess. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching!
This is awesome, so helpful
Thank you, Neil!
Jess, you did great! I'm so glad you had this opportunity.
Thank you!
Jess thanks for sharing your time with Dan! I've been waiting for this. Were you able to talk with Dan any about the longer pitch shots 30-80 yds from the rough? Would it be similar to this shot, with the open face, sternum slightly ahead of the ball, the left hand gripping a little more tightly?
Thank you, Tim! That's a great question - we didn't cover that specifically. I'll have to experiment with it and see what happens. One thing that comes to mind that might work or be worth testing out...when Dan was teaching us how to play a 30 yard bunker shot, he used a greenside bunker set up but a 9 iron (with a slightly open face) to get more distance and more run. I wonder if that concept might apply here too, so using the same set up for this shot but a lower lofted club to get more distance.
Great vid, I've learnt so much watching Dan's lessons, his explanations are so clear and easy to understand.
Thank you! Me too - thank goodness for Dan ☺️
Some great nuggets there from Dan...thank you both 👍
Thank you for watching, Kent!
Lovin your mannerisms Jess, especially the creeping away from a well struck chip shot as if it's a sleeping lion... You do make me chuckle 😊
Haha! I’ll always think of sleeping lions when I’m chipping now 🤣
Looking good , keep working hard , only going to get better and better
Thank you, Mark!
Just seen that your Dan Grieve lesson is now live on Golf Monthly - I'll hopefully get to watch it in the next few days.
It is! I’ve also got a video on it going live tomorrow 🤓
Thanks for this, it really flies high!
I love this shot 🙌
I've never seen someone that is being their golf journey and gets the golf swing dynamics so quickly, it's like you was a golf pro in a former life. It's amazing Jess 👌🏼
Haha I wish I was! Thank you, Olly 🙌
You should incorporate a Forward Press, to initiate your backswing. Practice by swinging a bucket of water… you don’t just snatch it back, you press it forward first. That will keep your wrists on the target line.
Thank you, I’ll try that.
@@jessratcliffegolf It’s advice from Harvey Penick, you may already know, but if not, his Little Red Book is basically 50 years of golf wisdom in a Guidebook. He imparts positive thinking and practical practice techniques. He advises you say Grip Down, Lay Back, etc always use positive words that encourage a positive mindset. The backswing starts with a slight forward motion. Start with half a bucket of water, slight forward press, (holding the handle with your trail hand) rock it back and forth, until you’re swinging it full circle. I used to do that for fun as a kid, so I knew what he meant… but anyway, when you do it with a full bucket, you HAVE to give it a slight forward press, starting from the ground up, like Hogan says in Five Lessons, inject your trail knee, engage your core, then your wrist takes it straight back… you won’t spill a drop. Then try it without a forward press… with a full bucket, water snatches out… but with a slight forward press… you can drag the club head straight back along the target line, just like Moe Norman says. But yeah Little Red Book is great.
@@jessratcliffegolf In nearly every other ball sport, the action is reactionary; in tennis, baseball, you’re reacting to the play… in golf, the individual starts the action from a stationary position. In tennis, the server reacts to a thrown ball… the knees bend and the racket recoils before the hit… the other player reacts to a served ball and moves toward it, slightly, before rearing back to hit it. In golf, you need to build that slight forward motion into your backswing… Spieth has a pronounced forward press and it doesn’t have to be dramatic, some players just trigger with their thumb… but it turns a static starting position into a reactionary dynamic motion… and that leads to a better use of your athletic ability; you create a natural athletic reaction, to an otherwise stationary ball. You then just go ahead and swing through the ball and cut the daisies, ha.
@@jeremybartlett1706 thank you, I love the sound of the Little Red Book, I'll look it up!
@@jessratcliffegolf Yeah he hung out with a LOT of the Greats and coached Babe Zaharias among others, Tom Kite, all sorts. He heard Sam Snead hit his opening drive and thought a rifle had gone off. Great stories and insights.
Dan is THE man!
He really is!
This is an issue I've had to fix within my own swing, the two things that have helped me are... Work really hard on feeling my arms connected to my body on the takeaway, but also have a feeling that at first parallel the club shaft isn't pointing down the target line (3 o'clock) , but lookin more like it is at 2 o'clock, it's taken a while, but I has worked for me.
Thank you, Olly! I need to work on that feel of the arms connected to my body on the takeaway. I have a feeling this change might take a while!
