Clara and Twelve: Toxic Love || Video Essay
Clara and Twelve. Perfect. Clever. Hilarious. Deadly. These could apply to either of them, and together they form the most epic and possibly the deadliest hybrid known to the world, while at the same time having of the most heart-breaking love/non-love stories in New Who.
In this video I will be exploring the complicated relationship of Clara and the Twelfth Doctor and their obsession with each other which has been the driving point of much of the emotional storyline in seasons 8-9. Why did Clara have to die? What does Heaven Sent mean? Why did the Doctor forget her?
Is this Doctor Who's idea of love?
Strap in, boys and girls, because this video is going to be intense.

This video is long overdue. It was actually the first cover I have ever filmed - June 2017, a day before I have to leave for Edinburgh, my friends and I are running around Prague in 25 C heat with two heavy cameras, a tripod, and a uke, trying to chase this new crazy idea I spontaneously had to make covers. This video has been sitting on my laptop for over 6 months and it took way more time to ...

omg I'm crying bc when the doctor says "whatever I do, you still won't be there" the automatic subtitles changed it to "still vomit" and now I kind of can hear it like that 😭😭 I was so invested in the video and that was such a dramatic moment that it caught me off guard it was so funny

I would describe Clara & 11&12's relationship kinda like two people who were married for decades but divorced but are still friends platonically. Theres such deep friendship and understanding of who each other are, trust, toxicity, codependency, emotional bonds after going through hell (divorce/couples counseling and hardships) . They are undeniably toxic and completely dependent of each other while at the same time their bond is absolutely beautiful. They've been metaphorically naked and vunerable with each other and trauma bonded. But they also support one another finding new loving relationships as in Melody and Danny.

I liked hell bent for the fact we still see how far the Doctor goes in grief. It's like his way of showing the time lords "You had your trick. Your fun... four and a half billion years to be exact. So let me show you my trick, and how inferior you Gallifreyans are." He proceeds to do what he wants, and he shows nothing can stop him. I also believe the question of the hybrid is answered. Neither one of them will destroy Galifrey but the the Doctor put them in their place due to Ashildr's inadvertent raven scheme. Basically I'm saying the two of them are the hybrid or at the very least, Ashildr.

I don't like saying that Clara deserved to die and that the doctor and Clara got the ending they deserved. It just feels like saying the doctor isn't allowed to have a happy ending with his companions. Clara was arguably his closest companion and because he got close to her and she got close to him they deserve and sad and traumatic ending? I watch a show to escape the real world not to get hit in the face by it. Can't characters learn from their flaws and develop instead of their flaws being the end of them? You keep saying they got the ending they deserved but I disagree. Clara never became more cruel or harsh she just learned that not every scenario can be won by telling the truth. And all the doctor did was starting to care to much. Saying they were bad for eachother is like saying that the doctor isn't allowed to care and his companions are never allowed to grow with him. Clara sae the doctor save lives like it was nothing and she wanted to have that ability. The doctor started to love Clara and didn't want to lose her. Sure they were flawed but her mistake didn't have to be fatal. It could have been something else that showed them they need to change. Maybe they could have just retired together. Like what River and the doctor did. He could have lived out his regeneration and she could just be with him without all the opportunities to try and be the doctor. And he wouldn't miss anything because he has a time machine. Saying that her dying was the only way to end her ark feels so pessimistic. Its basically saying that people can't change and will always die the way they lived. Saying that the doctor forgetting was the only possible ending for them is like saying that love is a bad thing. If it becomes dangerous instead of trying to fix it you just give up because that's the only way to do it.

Imo the only thing keeping the doctor and Clara from being a romantic relationship is the lack of fysical attraction. The Clara was definitely attracted to 11 and that probably why she started traveling with him but when she changed that went away. But by then she had already built a bond with the doctor and that bond just grew stronger when the fysical aspect had gone out of the way. Their relationship became deeper than basic human instincts and that's when they started to become more like eachother. It could have developed into something romantic if they had more time with eachother which is shown by the unkown phrase that they wanted to say to eachother in their last episodes. First when Clara is about to die and the doctor wants to say something but Clara doesn't let him because she doesn't like the bad timing. And then again on Gallifrey after Clara finds out how long the doctor was trapped. I think the doctor and Clara were perfect for eachother its just that their relationship but the rest of the universe at risk because they would to anything for eachother.

  • @Potato98765
    @Potato98765 8 месяцев назад

The way that the doctor and Clara talked with eachother and how they acted just showed how close they were. While Clara kept the doctor down to earth you never got the impression that she thought she was better than him. She just knew that he needed help sometimes just like everybody else in the universe. The negative effect they had on eachother was that they made eachother more like the other. Clara started to take more responsibility and bigger risks. When unit came looking for the doctor Clara took charge until he could arrive. When there was an unstoppable curse she tried to trick the person who made it. Clara looked up to the doctor and wanted to be like him which is what eventually led to her death. On the other hand the doctor started caring more. The dangerous thing about a powerful being caring about someone is that they become a threat if that person gets hurt. The doctor always did his best to save everyone but he never crossed any lines to bring someone back. He always just accepted their death even if he didn't like it. But with Clara he couldn't let go. He had allowed himself to get to close to her. He never said it but he loved her. It's not until he is standing at the end of time that he realized he had gone to far. He realized that even though they loved eachother they became to dangerous together. Clara became a danger to herself because she tried to do what he did without all his knowledge and the doctor became a threat to everyone because he would do anything to protect her. That's why one of them had to forget because if they both remembered they never would have stayed apart. Its a sad story about two people who are perfect for eachother but they can never be together.

An underrated moment I feel is that before 12 shoots The General he asks what regeneration they’re on, which definitely causes me to question whether he would have shot them if they had no regenerations left. It’s just a nice moment to remind us that The Doctor is still there, he’s just not driving right now.

I was brought up on Tom Baker/Elisabeth Sladen & for years they were my favourite Tardis duo. But the chemistry between Coleman & Capaldi is amazing. I have met the amazing Jenna Coleman a few times. Not only is she the most beautiful girl in the world, she is a lovely person & amazing actress. Her performance on Stage in "Lemons,Lemons,Lemons" earlier this year was incredible. The Coleman/Capaldi double act is easily my favourite Tardis team now!

Steven Moffat deliberately left it vague. He knew what the Hybrid was but hinted that it could be Ashildr and even gave a nod to the Paul McGann movie by including speculation about the Doctor being half human. The whole point was to let the audience figure it out on their own.

Twelve and Clara had such a fascinating relationship, but I never liked her ending. Imo her running off with her own Tardis and companion undermines the tragedy of her story. The whole point of Face the Raven, at least from my perspective, was that Clara was a human being who tried to be the Doctor, and it killed her. It was a deeply sad but fitting ending from someone who had become so detached from normal life and wanted to believe she could be someone more than she actually was. Clara was a clever and resourceful and commanding young woman, but I don't subscribe to the idea that she was truly the Doctor's equal. No human could be, and she was forced to learn that lesson the hard way in Face the Raven. The idea that Moffat undermined that and made her immortal in the end so she COULD essentially be his equal irked me.

The Doctor and Clara had a deep love for each other that was fuelled by the other one. The more they loved each other, the more unhinged and reckless they became. Clara acta the way she does for the series 8 finale because she didn't get the outcome she wanted. The Doctor acts the way he does in the series 9 finale because he didn't get the outcome he wanted. It's not right to say there is no romance. That is definitely part of the relationship. What makes Clara different to his other companions is that he never let the obsession spiral out of control before her. If Rose didn't get trapped in another dimension, perhaps that relationship would have gone out of control as well.

IMO the Twelfth + Clara era of the show is the deeper and more fully realized version of the Tenth + Martha/Donna. Capaldi and Coleman had perfect chemistry for Moffat's style of rapid fire dialogue, and Clara's autonomy, confidence, and overall charm led to her downfall due to her depression, recklessness and hubris in the end. No companion comes close to her arc in new Who, fuck Rose.

Thank you! For finally pointing out Danny's faults. I sometimes felt like Im going mad since nobody else seems to voice that Danny was controlling. He made up his mind about the Doctor from the first time he met him and never gave him a chance to prove him wrong, to the point where Clara felt she had to lie about spending time with him. He always bitched and whined about everything about Clara that he didnt like, and honestly her best friend. And I felt that he mostly whined about something is most all scenes he was in. He was right and whatever Clara was doing that didnt fit was wrong. I mean maybe he was right some of the time, but the way he put it out there was always so condecending and grating. I was waiting for him to warm up and actually try to get to know the doctor, and atleast give him a chance, since he was such a big part of Claras life. But he never did, never gave that chance, and then he died off screen. What was the point?.. I feel like he never gave Clara a chance, a chance to be who she was. He liked certain aspects of her, and the rest he tried to file away. In the end DDanny Pink did not get enough character-development. I needed and wanted to see something more of Danny, that the fact that he hated generals, amd had a painful past. Ps. I liked Danny better in "last christmas"

Frankly, I'm on Danny's side. First of all, he was the only boyfriend who was neither impressed nor intimidated by the Doctor's presence. Unlike Mickey and Rory, he never struck me as the jealous type, just a guy who wanted his girlfriend to be straight with him, which is a perfectly reasonable request. All strong relationships are built on honesty and that's all Danny ever asked of Clara. As much as I love Clara, her reluctance to be open and honest was causing the issues in their relationship, something she even admitted in in the finale. Second, Peter Capaldi played the Doctor as a sociopath. Why would any caring boyfriend want his girlfriend to spend time with the guy? You can take jealousy out of the equation entirely because Capaldi played the Doctor as borderline villainous. I have the context of watching his sociopathy during events that Danny didn't witness - for example, the complete lack of remorse in the line "he was dead already, I was saving us" which would have William Hartnell, Colin Baker and even Sylvester McCoy, arguably the darkest Classic Doctor, cringing with disgust - so frankly, I think Danny's a far better judge of character than people give him credit for. Hell, he's a better judge of character than the WRITERS gave him credit for because they didn't intend for Peter Capaldi to come across as being an outright sociopath. Sure, Danny pegged the Doctor as soon as he saw him but what people refuse to acknowledge is that he was RIGHT. More right than the writers intended because of Peter Capaldi's shortcomings as an actor. An example of this is when he intentionally prolonged Clara's pain in Dark Water in a sick test to "See how far you would go", then had the fucking audacity to go on a self-righteous rant about loyalty after he betrayed Clara's trust TWICE (Deep Breath and Kill The Moon) without apologising either time. Capaldi knew what was going to happen - he was ready for it - and he still had to rub it in and assert his deluded sense of moral superiority. If he'd delivered "You let me down" quietly, that scene would have a completely different impact and if he'd said "Cut out the whining" to HIMSELF, who was the one who actually did all the whining in that scene, it would have stopped the Doctor from looking like a sociopathic shitbag who cared more about feeling morally superior than his best friend's emotional state.

The climax of Doctor Who finales is when there’s nothing left to do, when the only way to save everyone, the last thing you can give is yourself. Sometimes, that sort of ending appears in earlier episodes, and the solution is that someone else wrestles the Doctor aside and takes the bullet themself. But in a true finale, the Doctors final act is taking that bullet to save someone else. Clara spent all her time trying to one up and eventually become The Doctor, but the moment she truly became The Doctor wasn’t her goodness, it wasn’t her cruelty, it was her sacrifice.

10:55 love does not have to be romantic. It is our human nature to have difficulties understanding love. We always associate love with physical affection. Clara and the Doctor clearly portray longing for a physical connection but their relationship transcends these base instincts (which are often forced to make for cheap, high viewership TV). *They perfectly portray the greatest possible virtue we, as a species, developed* : *_Unconditional love_* .
