    Thanks for the video on the G-stove. I'm going to try hot-tent camping next month and I have a few questions. I'll be using a G-stove Heat &View stove and was wondering how long of a burn time did you have and what type of wood did you use? What size tent were you using and what temperature were you able to maintain? Any tips or suggestions for a newbie? Thanks!

    • @thegiftofnature
      @thegiftofnature 7 месяцев назад

      Hey Richard, thank you for your questions & comment! That's awesome that you are trying out winter camping, what tent will you be using? Fully loading the stove, burn time is approximately 2 hours with cured hardwood. Keep in mind that different types of wood burn at different rates and create different amounts of ash which you'll need to clean out (sometimes through the night) to ensure proper airflow but I believe for the most part we are burning maple, birch & pines (our local trees here in Ontario). I just recommend making sure your wood is as dry as possible before putting it into the stove. If you have some wet wood you can keep it by the stove to dry up a bit but don't use wet wood because it just won't burn as hot and might snuff your fire out when moisture gets released. Our tent is 14.4 ft (4.4m) diameter and 7.2 ft tall at the highest point (2.2m) and it is a dome style so we do lose a little bit of head space where it creates it's peak. So far we are able to maintain temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius easily, there have been times where we wake up sweating because the tent has gotten so hot (above 25 celsius) but honestly there has also been times where the fire did go out throughout the night and we woke up to it being 0 inside the tent and needing to start the fire again, which can be a real test mentally, so always have some kindling prepared to make a fire fast incase that does happen. Sorry for the essay here! Tips I would give you for your first trip: 1. bring sleeping bags rated for negative temperatures just in case, it's always better to be prepared. 2. sleep in or with your clothes that you'll be wearing the next day inside your sleeping bag so it's warm when you wake up (obviously if you're sweating through the night change out of wet clothes as soon as possible.) 3. bring your drinking water inside when you sleep because it WILL freeze! 4. buy a couple of bags of wood from your local store (Canadian tire, gas station etc.) to bring for your first trip, this will ensure it's actually cured and will allow you to gauge how much wood you actually use and need per day/night and helping you learn how small the pieces you need for the stove if you do end up harvesting from your camp spot. 5. piggy backing off the last one, if you're harvesting from the forest -- make sure trees are absolutely dead so they are as dry as possible and they are not joking when they say "if you think you have enough wood for the night double it" -- they are right, I say triple it!

      @@thegiftofnature Thanks for the information. I'll be using a Pomoly Lite tent. I guess technically it's not my first hot tent trip since we had tent stoves in the army but my first time doing it solo hahaha. I'll be using maple and black locust mainly and I plan on getting some bundles of firewood just to have on hand. I appreciate you taking the time to respond, thanks again!

    Hi! Is that the UP-5 tent? If so can you turn the stove sideways to create more floor space inside?

    • @thegiftofnature
      @thegiftofnature 7 месяцев назад

      Hey Bryan, thanks for your comment :) Yes, this is the Up-5! I can turn the stove sideways, although with the GStove we have to load the wood from the front so with our cots taking up space on the sides we find this setup most efficient for us, that way we can see the fire and load more wood throughout the night. Another option to get more floor space that we are currently looking into is a 45 or 90 degree pipe attachment for the chimney, that way we would be able to push our stove more back towards the wall.
