Prairie Girl Paddler
Канада

With over a decade of backwoods camping experience in Northern Saskatchewan with my husband, we've gained lots of tips and shortcuts that I'm excited to share with you! We love the beauty and peace northern Saskatchewan gives us. Most trips involve a chunk of the Churchill river.
Hiking Nut Point, LaRonge
Hiking Nut Point, LaRonge, Saskatchewan in June, 2022. A very scenic hike with varying terrain. Be prepared to get wet feet in certain sections.
The water filtration we used during the hike is a Grayl water purification system. I highly recommend it. Just be aware that it has quite a bit of resistance.
The oyster mushroom jerky that we snacked on was homemade from oyster mushrooms that we foraged in Saskatchewan a few weeks prior to this hike.
I hope you get a chance to check out the LaRonge area!
Enjoy, and thanks for watching!

Hiking in Prince Albert National Park, Saskatchewan

Here's a taste of some of the beautiful hikes you can do in Prince Albert National Park. September is my absolute favourite time of year to go hiking. The trees are started to turn, slightly crispy air and NO bugs. Prince Albert National Park has so many beautiful areas to check out. I recommend August or September, because the mosquitos tend to be horrific in June and July from my past experie...
Besnard Lake to Tuck Falls (days 9 & 10 featuring sluice falls and surf city)
Просмотров 2103 года назад
Wrapping up the end of our 10 day journey to Tuck Falls with some fun in the rapids. In these last couple days we say goodbye to the glassy waters on Nipew and hello to day 10 where we get to ride some rapids. We welcomed the rapids hitting us in the face in these hot July temps. Note- watch to the end to see me ride down surf city!! We've camped at Sluice Falls a few times now, and the beauty ...
Besnard Lake to Tuck Falls - Days 7 & 8 (McIntosh Lake to Nipew)

Days 7 & 8 out of our 10 day journey to Tuck Falls. A mix of lazy recuperation and more fun in the rapids. Now on the journey home, but this is where the fun in the rapids begins. On day 8 we leave the beach on McIntosh Lake and head for another beach campsite on Nipew. Both portages that we take on day 8 are in excellent condition. Chief rapids is as fun as I remember from last year. Both litt...
Besnard Lake to Tuck Falls - Day 6 (Tuck Falls)

Day 6 of our 10 day journey to Tuck Falls. It's definitely a jam packed day of work, but to see this kind of remote beauty, it's worth it! One thing I have never heard mention of is the gorge. It is a remarkable beauty on it's own. Northern Saskatchewan never disappoints. I'm loving all the places my kayak is taking me. This video sums up why we backwoods camp. We didn't see another soul on thi...
Besnard Lake to Tuck Falls - Days 4 & 5. (Trout Lake to Paull River)

Days 4 & 5 on our 10 day journey to see Tuck Falls. From sand beaches to grueling portages, saying this trip is worth the work is an understatement. I need to correct myself when I talk about portaging from Trout to the Paull. McIntosh is not considered to be part of Paull River, however it is on the Paull River route. I didn't include footage of portaging the gorge. We used the portage on rive...
Besnard Lake to Tuck Falls Days 2 & 3 (Black Bear Island Lake to Trout Lake)

Days 2 & 3 of our journey to Tuck Falls, SK. From blistering heat to the hum of horseflies. Kayak backwoods camping at its best in northern Saskatchewan. Nothing beats enjoying a glass of red wine every night in the remote wilderness and reflecting on the days adventures. My eddyline once again did not disappoint. The war wounds it survived from day 1 are just a reminder of this amazing adventu...
AeroPress Go Demo & Review

Yes you can have a delicious coffee in the backwoods. I'm a bit of a coffee snob. If I start the day with a bad cup of coffee, I'm not a happy camper. The areopress go is lightweight and delivers a great cup of coffee without compromise. You can have all or most of your normal luxuries in life camping out of a kayak. Cheers! Besnard Lake to Tuck Falls (Day 1-Besnard to Black Bear Island Lake)

Day 1 of our 10 day kayak trip from Besnard portage to Tuck Falls. We decided to get a ride across Besnard so that we would have more days to explore new territory on the Paull river. It was record hot weather while we were on the trip. This is the first official kayak trip for my new eddyline sitka lt and it sure didn't disappoint me. First impression and review on the Eddyline Sitka LT

My first impression of my new eddyline Sitka LT. This boat is 2 feet longer than my previous Swift Kiwassa 12.6. I'm looking forward to taking it on a 10 day northern Saskatchewan kayak backwoods trip. Nothing like camping out of a kayak in the wilderness. Keep on the lookout for more videos of my 10 day backwoods trip. Saskatchewan has so many gorgeous lakes to explore!

Two water filtration systems for backcountry camping and paddling.

These are the best two water filtration systems I've found for backcountry camping and paddling. The first one is ideal for base camp, and the second one is the most convenient for drinking water while paddling. The best paddling shoes for kayakers

gotta a luv a lady that doesn't know the diff between 6 and 8 inches.
Love your short vids... it's the internet, people don't have the longest attention spans in 2023. I've got a Delta, but have always liked the Eddyline series.
Thank you! I was worried that some of the videos are too long. I appreciate you watching 😊
This looks amazing guys, you created really fantastic content here. Bravo 🔥🔥
Thank you! It's a beautiful hike.
PGP, thanks for the post, hope you have more coming. What was the distance of the hike? Cheers!
The hike was 15km to the point, so 30km total round trip. Lots of elevation changes. Thank you for watching! I've been enjoying your latest series! Can't wait to see all your 2023 adventures.
We hiked this after a significant rain fall on a very hot day. I definitely recommend packing a sports drink mix to keep your electrolytes topped up. I highly recommend Nut Point 👌

I ate that, loved it, and now I know how to prepare it.
Really nice video, just curious is you considered a pack boat vs a sit inside at all in making your purchase decision and if so what lead you to the Sitka? happy paddling!
I like the sit inside kayaks better because you can get a good knee brace against the inside, use a spray skirt for rapids, etc. We do a lot of backwoods camping where we put on a lot of kilometres in a day so the sit inside works well for that. I chose the Sitka because of the length and sleekness. Also the skeg feature is a must for me for keeping the boat straight for more efficient paddling. Also, I love the third little hatch for organization! What do you like to paddle?
@@prairiegirlpaddler6319 thanks!my paddling experience is limited to fishing kayaks, sups and canoes so I’m just learning about performance sit in kayaks.
@@prairiegirlpaddler6319 does the Sitka feel rigid and responsive when paddling?
@@theoutdoordad7395 yes, but keep in mind it's 14.5 feet long so wouldn't be great for tight rapids. It was great in rapids where you don't have to dodge rocks.
@@prairiegirlpaddler6319 Thanks, I've seen what happens to thermoformed kayaks when they hit a rock, I'll avoid rapids!
I demoed the blue Sitka LT on Friday and loved it. Similar in size to my kayak of 19 years that was stolen off my rack, but better tracking without using the skeg. I’m 5’3, 140 pounds and was thinking maybe the smaller, lighter ST instead, but I really liked the 3rd hatch, larger rear hatch, and greater depth. Is there a reason as a woman that you went with the LT versus the ST? I’m so on the fence.
I'm 5'9 so I definitely like the extra room. We also do a lot of backwoods trips, so the more storage the better. The third hatch was great selling feature for me as well. It's nice to have a handy place for your phone, sunscreen, snacks, etc. Let me know if you get the LT! I have zero regrets with my purchase!
There's a tendency for newbies to favour a shorter kayak and they always regret it. There's a tendency for medium experienced paddler's like me to favour longer kayaks and I regret it! There is an advantage to having a smaller boat-- it's like putting a big engine on a small craft. While you want a longer kayak for speed and efficiency, you never want a boat that's too big for you for the exact opposite reason. The energy you expend starts to become one of diminishing returns.
PGP....This was memory lane all the way! Thanks for posting. You guys doing one more paddle trip before the season ends?
Unfortunately I don't think there will be another overnight paddling trip this year. But that's not in stone😉. We still need to get a paddling day in on the SK river to take in all these gorgeous fall colours. Hopefully the wind doesn't knock off all the leaves. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful scenery! Thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it! It's a beautiful park, especially in September. 🍂
@@prairiegirlpaddler6319 I bet! We really enjoy making outdoor content also
Looks like a nice day for a walk.
Perfect hiking weather. Gotta love Sept!
Not all of my adventures are in a kayak.😉 We celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary soaking up the beauty of the forest! 🌲
Stayed that that campsite on Nipew Lake many times!!!! I don't know how you can fall asleep that close to the falls, the white noise always keeps me awake. So........where's the next trip to??
Sluice is definitely loud to say the least! I'm pretty sure Brabant will be the next adventure.
would like this next time we are there!
You got it! Just remind me😊
You didn't mention that nipew lake and Hayman lake are like conveyor belts. Good current and no rapids. Lol
Ten days sure went by fast.
Way too fast!
It's always a treat when surf city is part of the trip home. Can't wait to plan the next trip!
My people are wondering why you edited the shots of me in the sauna. So am I. Lol
😂 Didn't have permission
Permission granted. Lol
You forget to mention that I left my toothbrush out and couldn't use it because I wasn't sure if the mouse had violated it. Lol
I know! I was sad that I forgot to mention the mouse using your toothbrush as toilet paper. 😂
Those silly mice. Looks so fun. Love hearing the stories.
The mice definitely outsmarted us. They work quickly.
I like the dragon fly hunting the horse fly basically on your head.
Definitely a relief the see dragonflies in action!
Even though we're now on the journey home, this is where the fun in the rapids begins!
PGP, Congratulations, you made it! Nice to see you celebrate with a little bit of wine at the falls! Looked like a beautiful day! Cheers!🍻
It was a great day! The wine tasted extra good at the falls. 🍷
Darn YT is hiding your comment on the next video(prob because of the link???). I'll definitely check out that sea to summit air mattress. Thx for the tip!
I was dieing to know if we actually made to Tuck falls. Whew, glad we did. Lol
Haha, glad you don't have live in suspense anymore.
Now this is what it's all about! I hope to see these beauties again soon!
Can you share more of your thoughts comparing the Swift to the Kiwassa?
The Sitka is 2 feet longer than the Kiwassa so no surprise really that it's faster. The Sitka doesn't leave a wake at all so it's definitely not working as hard. My husband still has his Kiwassa. When going through large waves my husbands boat was really smacking down on top of the waves, whereas my Sitka cut through them like a knife. The only possible con I can think of is that the hatches aren't as deep. So it's better to use smaller or long skinny dry bags for packing gear. Mind you I still didn't have a problem fitting all my gear on our last 10 day trek. Just packed it slightly different. What boats have you tried out so far?
@@prairiegirlpaddler6319 thanks so much. I have a couple of recreational kayaks (9.5 Perception SOT and 10.5’ WS Aspire), and the vast majority of my kayaking to this point has been on small local waters. I would like something longer and faster that could occasionally be used for a little bigger, rougher water, too. I’m still a novice, but I think I’d lean slightly to the maneuverable over the stable.
@@hayswebb7304 I think you'd be happy with the Sitka for sure. It's made for open water. It handled rapids quite well, but I don't do crazy rapids. My Kiwassa had a flat bottom so I was concerned that the Sitka would feel tippy because it has a slight keel, but it's very stable.
@@prairiegirlpaddler6319 I don’t have the opportunity to try these around here, so I really appreciate your comments. Thank you!
@@hayswebb7304 you are most welcome! Let me know if you have any other questions! I love this topic 😊
Sweet campsite both nights. Did you guys find it much of a challenge paddling against the current?
It actually wasn't bad against the current. Just a couple spots of hard paddling. I'm glad we cheaped out on the flight and did the trip in reverse. Did you get to see the beach campsite on McIntosh?
@@prairiegirlpaddler6319 No! Wish I did! I've never actually camped on McIntosh except on the portage on the North end.
It's definitely worth it's own mini trip
Can't wait for the next video.
Can't wait to upload it!!
I can't wait to find out if we actually made it to Tuck falls.
🤣 Anything could happen!
I combined day 4 & 5 together. Day 4 was an easy day and day 5 was a good days work. Honestly, I love the challenge because if it wasn't challenging everyone would do it, and what's the accomplishment in that?
PGP, good job! Looked like a fantastic couple of days other than the heat. Were you able to cool down your wine?
Thanks! Yes, it was a success cooling the wine. That heat was something else.
Awesome! Love the start to the video with your faaaaansaaaaayyyy coffee press ;) - 3 takeaways from this, the sound of the horseflies picked up so well (aaagggh!), the crazy hi-tech camp stove you're using (drop a link!) and the 9:30 still shot of the sunset lake lookin' like a painting! Ah, the north. Love it! Living virtually through you now so I can save my arms and heart! :)
Oh the horseflies. Now we have video evidence for when we forget how bad they were. The sunsets are alway fantastic in the north. Someday we will twist your arm into experiencing it. The camp stove we use is the "vital stove". Unfortunately it's getting more difficult to locate. We had to buy a second one and ended up going with ebay. All the stores that used to sell it no longer do.
Can't wait to see the rest. Great videos 👍
Thank you! The rest of the trip is more exciting. It gets more beautiful the more remote you go.
This was definitely the hottest temperatures I've ever experienced in the backwoods. I've had to survive cold temperatures in the past. This was my first experience of heat being a survival situation.
Sweet, was thinking about getting one of those. Do the cups nest inside each other if you have multiple cups?
Everything nests into the main big cup, but I don't think you could fit a 2nd cup in there. I'm definitely impressed with the coffee it makes and I'm a coffee snob😉☕
How was the coffee? That was incredibly fast for a single cup. French press requires 3 minute soaking time
The coffee quality is excellent, and it doesn't have a residue in the bottom of the cup like a French press has.
Did you hide a treat in there?
Yes! The treat was delicious coffee 😉😂
Even Taz is excited for a good cup of coffee 🐶
I got the Sitka XT last year in Spring and I´m loving it. I have been on prairie lakes but the one in the mountains are my favorites.
Such a great design! I would love to paddle in the mountains someday. Where have you taken your boat so far?
@wyomarine I would love to!!
Life gave you limes... the man who broke your kayak is the lemon! 🤣
And it starts with a coffee......off to a good start to my estimations! I don't know about you but I always find when I drive up from the prairies, the whole first day of paddling feels like I'm in a dream. Like I cant trust my eyes on what I'm seeing. Anyways, good start PGP, looking forward to the next vid.....BTW, that IS a totally bitchin campsite!
It was a few days in when we realized that we had a sunrise and sunset picture on the same day. I agree the drive up is surreal. I can't wait to be back in the thick of the north again!
I like how Richard remembered to keep his beer cold. Lol
🤣🤣 Yes that needs to be in the log book
Long day to say the least, but worth every second of it. I was a bit drained by the time I summed up the day that night. Good thing for red wine!
I know very little about kayaking but I bought a red LT yesterday. I guess that means I’ll be checking in daily with you to help me expand my knowledge base on kayaking and camping ;-)
Congratulations on your purchase! I hope you love your LT as much I do. Also, I'm happy to help! 😊
I don't know PGP, I think you should of bought a canoe. Looking forward to your Northern trip vids. Cheers #buyacanoe
😂😂 The battle of the boats!
I bought a solo canoe and wish I had bought the kayak. Kayak is faster and isn't affected by the wind as much as my canoe.
@@michaelwolf8090 I don't have much canoe experience, but I wouldn't trade my kayak for anything! So great in bad weather.
Forsooth! You speak as if both isn’t an option!! 😜 seriously, I enjoy both. Canoes I love for traveling with 2 or more little people. My youngest is 10 and she’s adventurous! She wants to hit the rapids. I’m old enough to know better, er, know my limits!! We’ve been tandem kayaking (inflatable), but want to have faster, more solid sides, more true kayaking. I prefer kayaks, but won’t turn down a chance to canoe, either. But, let the boat wars rage on! It’s fun to stir the pot!!! 😈
I thought I would have to get used to the feel of this boat, but it instantly felt like home. I am so happy with my choice!
Looks awesome even though I'm a Meatatarian, lol. I'll have to give it a try! My girlfriend loves that cookbook! Thanks PGP.
Yes definitely try out those recipes! Let me know what you think of it. You have a smart girlfriend!
I'm also a meatatarian, but so much easier than trying to keep things cold. When we crave meat we catch fish. Swimming to sizzling in 5 minutes! Can't beat fresh walleye
@@tysonjez I dehydrate some chicken and ground beef...but I'm not sure the shelf life. Oh ya, Tyson, I'm picking up what you're putting down! Nothing beats a fresh fry of Walleye! Ice fishing this winter was a little tough, so I'm chomping at the bit for spring fishing!
I'm one of those lucky people that get to go on journeys with Prairie girl paddler. With these portions for 4... you could probly feed 5 lol. We're usually pretty stuffed at supper time
Gotta make sure I don't starve the group 😉
After watching this, I'm hungry.
Now you just have to wait till July😉
What plant based meal would you like to see me prepare next?!
